Quiet Company - "Fear And Fallacy Sitting In A Tree": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Quiet Company is from Austin , Texas %mdash a city rich in musical diversity, enormous talent and towering musical history%mdashbut the quintet brings their own unique brand of indie power pop that sets them apart. What started as a solo project of prolific frontman Taylor Muse eventually grew to a full band with the addition of Tommy Blank (Guitar), Matt Parmenter (Bass), Jeff Weathers (Drums) and Cody Ackors (Trombone). Quiet Company has forged a familiar yet unique celebratory pop-rock sound layered with introspective lyrics that explore love, death and incisive observations about human nature. 2010 was a breakout year of sorts for the five-piece group upon the release of "Songs for Staying In", which features singles that landed regular rotations on almost every rock and pop radio station in Austin, and TV placements on MTV's The Real World: New Orleans, E! Channel's Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The hard-earned buzz earned them a live taping in Austin City Limits Studio 6a, as well as acting roles (as themselves) on ABC's former documentary drama My Generation. The band's latest endeavor, "We Are All Where We Belong"%mdashmixed by legendary engineer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2, The Cure)%mdashchronicles the many different emotions that a person goes through in a break up: sadness, resentment, self-doubt, but ultimately hope and the indescribable joy and freedom that comes from the realization of making the right decision. "It is easily the most personal thing I've ever written," Muse ... From: sxsw Views: 496 24 ratings Time: 03:27 More in Music

Sphynx - "Sha Dynasty": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Cory Dennis, Todd Harris, and Aaron Miller's first glimpse of success came in high school with The El Guapos, an indie-rock outfit that disbanded after three years of packed Austin venues, a capacity performance at the 2009 NAMM SXSW-Underage showcase, and a botched European record deal. While Miller and Harris studied at The University of Texas, Dennis honed his recording and production skills, founding Indie Fort Studios and receiving acclaim for his work with award-winning baroque-pop group, Mother Falcon. The three remained best friends and it wasn't long before they embarked on another musical project, this time experimenting with pop and electronic music. They called it Sphynx. Propelled by several Austin artist collectives, Sphynx's debut single, "Razberry Wine," was released on two local compilations and picked up by University of Texas radio station, KVRX. Sphynx gained momentum with the February 2011 release of their debut EP, 'Human Beast.' Critics applauded the EP's "elaborate synth pop," and proclaimed that "here we've got a new breed, sharing a pedigree with Passion Pit and early MGMT" who "recycles a bit of history and puts a bit of soul to their songs." During the summer of 2011, 'Human Beast' charted in the top 30 on radio stations in Canada, Alaska, New York, Michigan, Florida, California, Louisiana and Texas. In September 2011, Sphynx was a featured artist on the website of nationally syndicated radio program, Loveline. The three continued to navigate ... Anyone is welcome to come by the show to watch as part of the live studio audience - 4pm Friday Special Guest: Hugh MacLeod Your Twitter bio says you are a "Cartoonist, bestselling author and marketing apostate." I had to go look up apostate and it's defined as "a person who abandons his religion, party, or cause." So have you abandoned marketing? Tell us about social objects? what is a social object and how do they relate to social networks? How should marketers think about social objects? Marketing Automation: Doing It Right http://www.hubspot.com/marketing-automation-examples/bid/28757/Great-Marketing-Automation-Ontolo-s-New-Version-Announcement I've been doing a poor job of giving you what you really, truly need as a link builder. For some reason, I thought I knew what you wanted better than you did. Because of that, we've built some of the most complex link building tools in the industry. In this letter (reprinted in part uncensored with their permission), the CEO of Ontolo, Ben Wills, apologizes for having led their product in a bad direction over their last version and explains the thought process and decisions that spurred the newest version of their product, which they are releasing next week. Ben ends the letter with a note that he will be sending a follow-up email with more product specific information on Friday morning to follow up, and thanks the community for being involved. The email never directly asks for anything except the reader's forgiveness for being subjected to sub-par software. They used this letter in other channels besides email, by publishing it on their blog and social media accounts as well. Ben sets clear expectations for his follow-up - After sending this message on Wednesday, he notes that you'll receive another email on Friday with more information about the next version of their product. On Friday morning when the next email went out, the people who received it were excited to do so: Ontolo had built up some suspense and excitement for the next version of their software. Imagine if your leads were actually EXCITED to receive their next piece of email marketing from you. Marketing Takeaway: You don't have to kill kittens when you automate your marketing efforts. Google+ Launches Business Pages http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/28618/Google-Finally-Launches-Business-Pages.aspx Google+ Pages have a similar look and feel to Facebook Pages, allowing businesses to leverage the social network to connect with their audience, spread their messages, promote their content, and generate leads. http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/28624/How-to-Create-a-Google-Business-Page-in-5-Simple-Steps.aspx With a network of more than 40 million members, Google+ is indeed deserving of your marketing attention, so smart marketers should set up their Google+ Pages as soon as possible. Avoid creating your business page through just any old account, such as a personal gmail account. Instead, choose a gmail account that is accessible to multiple members of your marketing team (e.g. companymarketingteam@gmail.com), and use that account to create your page. Promoting a blank page isn't a great way to convince people that your Page is valuable enough to add to their Circles. So invest some time into optimizing your page and sharing a few links to valuable content before you start promoting it to the masses. Marketing Takeaway: Haven't set up your Google+ Business page? No PS3 Cross-Game Chat and Gaming History Museum - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 15 VIEWS | ADDED 03:00:00 08/25/11
Sony finally admits that cross-game chat will not come to PS3. Also three guys are attempting to create a videogame history museum, but need your help.
SHOW NOTES:
Story 1:
During an interview with Eurogamer last week during the annual Gamescom event in Europe, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida finally laid to rest any hope of PS3 gamers gaining the ability to chat with their friends across games.
According to Yoshida, the reason for this is the amount of system RAM the system has, as well as how that memory is used. Basically all of the memory is given over to the games, and so there isn’t any left over to run something such as voice chat. Yoshida said "Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."
But rest easy Sony fans … their upcoming handheld the Vita will actually have more memory available to it that it will actually allow cross game chat. And five years into the PS3’s life, is the loss of something that you didn’t even have in the first place REALLY all that devastating?
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-19-why-the-ps3-cant-do-cross-game-voice-chat
Stor y 2:
So most thing in the world eventually get a history museum in their honor, so why shouldn’t video games? Well three guys are trying to do just that, but they need your help.
Collectors Joe Santulli, Sean Kelly and John Hardie have a combined collection of video game items, and are attempting to create a place to showcase those items. Their plan is to first create a mobile exhibit that would travel the country showing off the history of video gaming. This will hopefully drive interest and donations to help create a permanent location that would be based in Silicon Valley in California.
The group currently has a Kickstarter page set up to help raise money for this project, but are still short of their $30,000 goal. We here at Press Pause think that this could only be a good thing for gamers, and is something we should all chip in for. If you want to donate to their cause, you have until September 1st to donate.

Our guest in the studio: Hilmar Schneider, IZA Director of Labor Policy
[LESS INFO] 21 VIEWS | ADDED 22:30:00 02/15/11
Our studio guest talks to us about trend towards hand-manufactured products.DW-TV: Joining us now is the Director of Labor Policy at the German Institute for the Study of Labor, the I-Z-A. Hilmar Schneider, thanks for coming in. Mr. Schneider is this a definite trend, a move from mass production to specialized manufacturing? Hilmar Schneider: It is indeed indicating a very broad trend. Individualization of production and individualization of consumption is the answer to our technical facilities we have nowadays and it's also an expression of the wealth of our economies that we are able to afford this type of manufacturing. DW-TV: So would you say that companies are prepared for this? Hilmar Schneider: I think so but it seems that especially smaller companies that are more flexible are better prepared to react to these things while those big tankers, those big companies that are strictly hierarchically structures have more difficulties to react adequately to the trend. DW-TV: How can your average firm make sustainable profits from a trend like this, as it costs a lot to individualize products? Hilmar Schneider: Well it does, but people do no longer want standardized mass production, they want to express themselves by their consumption. So they want these products and firms can only survive if they are able to deliver. And it requires, of course, a certain type of worker. Workers need to be more entrepreneurial than they used to be, because the variety of possibilities, of opportunities that we have generated by this project is so huge that you need people that are able to guide customers through this jungle of opportunities. We need people who are able to give advice to customers and all that needs a new type of worker. Of course, you still need skills, technical skills, but there's something coming in addiction...entrepreneurial spirit. DW-TV: Do we those people though here in Germany at a time of skills shortages? Hilmar Schneider: We are not perfectly prepared for this, but at least we are aware of it and I think you can learn, although it's still difficult to think of it as something that you learn at school. DW-TV: So are more and more companies setting their sights on an elite group of customers with all the money? Hilmar Schneider: Well on the one hand of course you can have your individualized Bordeaux if you have the money to afford it. But it's much broader than that. Think of ring tones for your mobile phone or screen savers for your mobile phone, your muesli can be individualized via internet. This is for cheap money, it's something everybody can afford. So a very broad trend toward individualization. DW-TV: So are we moving back away from industrialization? Hilmar Schneider: No. Industrialization is still the tool that we need, but in a much more skillful manner than we are used to. It's not the same type of product for everybody, we use machines for producing individualized products for everybody. Interview: Ben Fajzulin
