HOW TO GET A PHD IN GOD’S WILL with GEORGE LEWIS
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 13:37:56 11/01/11
HOW TO GET A PHD IN GOD’S WILL (YOU CAN READ THIS OR, WATCH THE VIDEO) http://georgeflewis.com I was recently asked the question: "How did you get to where you are today after living in your car for several months." The simple answer is by following God's will. (Higher Power's will, Sources' will, Universe's will, the Force's will. Call this Higher Power what you will. I use the word God because the term feels right to me. However, my definition of that word may be vastly different from yours. I guess that I failed to tell you that in the years prior to living in my car that I had come from owning nothing to owning the largest residential real estate firm in my County. What I was worth then would equal hundreds of millions of dollars today. I had learned how to get material things. I owned many cars, homes, airplanes, motor homes, motorcycles, boats, and much real estate. An economy much like todays and some poor decision making took it all in an instant. My name was on my real estate corporation. It was in this, and in all the stuff I owned, that I found my identity. When my little empire crashed, I crashed. I believed this to be the worst thing that could possibly happen to me. I had to rebuild myself from the ground up. The months in my car started me on my way to a PHD in God’s will. First, many of the things that have happened to me that seemed terrible at the time, turned out to be the best things. From that, I deduce that on some level I really don’t know what is good for my spirit. On a subconscious level, I now know that I did not want God’s will because I thought that it might not line up with my desire for all the things I wanted. Consequently, my visualizations limited me, as they weren’t necessarily what were best for me. Now, when I see in retrospect, those things, and situations that I believe to be God’s will for me, I see that they are best for me. Additionally, my will has provided me with many ‘bloody noses.’ I don’t want any more. When I ask myself, which would I rather follow, my spirit or, my ego, the choice is very clear. I choose to follow my spirit. It is in this that I find peace of mind. I never found peace of mind in any new car, boat, airplane, or material item. What I did find was that the smell of new leather was gone within a couple of months. I did not know that peace of mind was the true prize. Without knowing it peace of mind is what I thought all of the stuff I was striving to get would bring me. With this in mind, I needed to develop a new viewpoint and a new way of conducting my life. Getting things and all that falls within that category doesn’t mean much so, learning how to get them doesn’t mean much either. What I needed to learn was how to recognize and follow God’s will. That poses a much larger difficulty than figuring out how to get ‘stuff.’ I spent quite a while thinking that God’s will would come to me looking much like a completed vision board. That has never happened. What I find is that God’s will is always right in front of my nose. It presents itself as the next best thing for me to do. My ego sees this as far too simple and wants the complete treasure map. However, what I have to do is surrender and be willing to be totally led by the next good thing that presents its self. I must be willing to see it, and to do it to the best of my ability. I now understand that God is not the ecclesiastic bellhop that my prayer for stuff was inadvertently trying to make God out to be. If you have ever completed a draw by the numbers picture, you will understand this. At first, all I see is a bunch of unconnected numbers that don’t really make sense. Then, as I draw the connecting lines from one to two and to three etc., I soon see the picture that is emerging and I have that ‘aha’ moment. Seeing God’s will requires that I listen carefully to what I hear, pay close attention to what I see, and most importantly, to what I feel and to what I intuit. I can do none of these well when I am in fear or its nasty little offspring anger, when my thinking takes me into the future or the past. I must work at being fully present to every moment. I must be internally quiet. To exercise the fullness of what my intuition has for me, I must put what my head and my heart tells me in second and third place to what my ‘gut’ tells me. When I use the term ‘gut,’ I’m speaking of that small area in my solar plexus that informs me of what is right and what is wrong through feelings rather than with words or thoughts. I have to pass thinking and my actions through this guidance test. It is my primary spiritual compass. In addition, my intuition will speak to me as an afterthought. Here is an example of what I mean by afterthought. It is a sunny day and there is absolutely no rain in sight. From somewhere comes the idea that I should take my umbrella. I opt to believe my logical brain and leave without my umbrella. When I return home, I have been soaked by a rain that didn’t seem possible. When I pray for what I think I want and need, I tag the prayer with these words; “if it is your will, and that I might better serve others”. Even with this, I have to be aware of my motives. I always have at least two motives for everything I do. One is my altruistic motive. It is the motive I want to believe about me and, more importantly, I want you to believe about me. The second is my self-centered self-serving motive. I must know which of these I want to be the deciding factor. I must also know that what I need to pray more for power than for specifics. Let me explain. If I am sitting in my closet and I am starving, praying for God to feed me probably won’t work. It is doubtful that a hot dog or a steak dinner is going to suddenly pop through the keyhole. What I must pray for is the power to feed myself. Following these ideas is exactly how I got from my car to where I am today, the details of which could easily fill a book. Thanks for taking the time to watch this short video. I hope you find my experience helpful. Do come back and in the meantime, don't forget to accentuate the positive and have a fantastic day.

Nmu Five Acre Native Plants Research Project To Be Destroyed To Make Dorms
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 21:05:45 10/18/07
Students fight university plan to bulldoze an environmental study project for building dorms in Marquette, Michigan **Video coming soon !!!Northern Michigan University students are trying to save their four-year-old Native Plants project that will be a valuable seed tool for other northern Michigan environment efforts and help attract students to the campus along Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula if its not destroyed to make dorms“Green wash” at Northern Michigan UniversityPlans to destroy a student environment and research project is at university with slogan "Northern Naturally" (Marquette, Michigan) - Northern Michigan University students are battling a university plan to bulldoze a four-year-old environment study project to build new dorms.Northern Michigan University (NMU) student Michael Joko Rotter is leading a petition drive and other student efforts to stop the university from destroying the five acre Outdoor Classroom and Native Plants Research Area - that has received $24,000 in state and federal funding.During the past week, Rotter started a petition drive and media campaign - collecting over 500 signatures and organizing several student organizations to battle the NMU administration plans to eliminate the Native Plants Project garden and research area.NMU Student Michael Rotter is leading the fight to protect the Native Plants Project that has involved the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds of students"We have spent the last four years working hard to make the area natural and educational," said Rotter, a 22-year-old NMU senior."Native plants contribute to helping keep our waterways clean, building habitat for animals and other organisms, and contribute to a more sustainable lawn."The five-acre native plants outdoor classroom has oak/jack pine savanna, a retention pond/wetland area, upland mesic forest and shrub types representing various northern Michigan habitats .“If NMU is going to use the slogan “Northern Naturally” to me this project is the epitome of that whole slogan,” said project professor Dr. Ronald Sundell, director of the NMU Environmental Science Program.NMU students put loving care into the five-acre Native Plants Project on the north side of campus (NMU Native Plant Project Photos by Professor Dr. Ronald Sundell)“The project has been approved by the university under their former master plan that is now being revised - now they are saying they are going to put up new dorms - brick and mortar,” said Dr. Sundell, who is active in several northern Michigan environment projects. The students hope to convince "campus planners to preserve our native plants and make Northern green and not give it a ‘green wash'," said Rotter, who is a member of the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team that has organized numerous environment projects including helping to recycle or properly disposed of over 370 tons of household hazardous waste on the past three Earth Days. The project includes field sampling of vegetation, insects, birds, small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians); ecological modeling, plant identification, native plant propagation, restoration techniques; water quality and oil analysis plus weather and climate studies.Literally hundreds of students from the student environmental science organization and NMU classes have assisted in the development of this site,” Sundell said. Over the past four years, hundreds of NMU students have worked hard to build the Native Plants Project that will soon become a beautiful part of campus if it's not destroyed by NMU dorm planners“I think there are opportunities for the university to enhance their environmental science program and attract significant numbers of new students to NMU,” Sundell said.“And it’s things like the Native Plants Project that makes this attractive to potential students interested in environmental restoration and environmental sustainability.”Rotter has fostered support from the NMU Environmental Science Organization, Superior Geography Club, Sustainable Agriculture club, and the Students Against Sulfide Mining.NMU students instrumental in creating and nurturing the Native Plant Project over the past four years are Mike Stefancic, a graduate who was part of the first planting; and Jason Woodhull, who trained by Stefancic and then passed the torch to Michael Rotter. Thousands of students hours have gone into making the project a success and it includes The project includes field sampling of vegetation, insects, birds, small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians“These students have helped out during the summers doing the planting, maintaining and developing of the site,” Sundell said.“This was the worst drought in the recorded history of the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) and with the help of Mike Rotter and other student volunteers we were able to add an additional 11,000 plants to the campus Native Plant Project this summer,” Sundell said.“And during this dry summer the students maintained the part we had established - even under these harsh conditions it grew in size about one third of an acre.”“It takes a lot of care for these plants to become well establish - but once they are established they will need minimal maintenance,” Sundell said.If it’s not destroyed, the project will help other environmental efforts in northern Michigan.“You can’t go a lot of places and find native seed - we are becoming a major seed source,” Sundell said“We are planning to give the seeds to organizations across the central U.P. for restoration projects.” The Native Plants Project is coming of age and soon will add beauty to the campus.Beautiful flowers are part of the project that is coming of age and will soon have many flowering plants in brilliant colors“It may not look aesthetically pretty at the present because it takes time to be establish - but once established it will become an area of great beauty with all sorts of flowering plants and grasses in shades of white, yellow, pink and purple - it will be an amazing hill site that the campus can be proud of,” Sundell said. The project is located on a small hill between the new science building and the NMU Learning Resource Center on the north side of campus.“There is other space on campus that Northern could use for housing and dorms,” Sundell said. This map shows the five acre project at NMU that is growing each year but now faces destruction to make way for dorms and other student housingThe National Weather Service automated weather tower for Marquette sits in the middle of the native plants area and would have to be moved if the site if developed for dorms. NWS weather instruments hang from the 30-foot tower.“It’s a perfect site for collecting the weather data because its sits in middle of an open area, surrounded by natural vegetation and is not close to buildings or sidewalks which can skew the weather data,” Sundell said.“It’s hard to find an appropriate location in the city of Marquette to collect this weather data so our native plants site was one of the few locations available and a perfect site for this automated weather tower,” Sundell said.In a similar project, Rotter recently helped turn the NMU Lutheran Campus Ministry lawn into a Native Plant Garden that includes rocks from three of the Great lakes, dozens of Michigan plants, and a solar fountain. On Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, just hours before getting the bad news from NMU, Rotter arranged to have a Lutheran pastor and a Zen Buddhist head priest conduct a blessing of the garden that encircles the Lutheran Campus Ministry house. Two pastors conducted a blessing on the Lutheran Campus Ministry new Native Plants Garden on Friday Oct. 5, 2007 that was attended by LMC board members and LCM students. (Garden Blessing Photos by Greg Peterson)Prayers, incense, bells, and chants were part of the ceremony arranged by Rotter, who is a member of Lake Superior Zendo, a Marquette Zen Buddhist temple.Stones from three of the Great Lakes are part of the Lutheran Campus Ministry Native Plants Garden that encircles the house and replaces the lawn. Rotter held two student meetings this week to discuss ways to stop NMU from destroying the project. “We had a really good turn out at the meeting with a majority of the audience in support of the project,” Rotter said. Pleas to university officials to reconsider the plan has fallen on deaf ears, Rotter said. “We felt that the planning commission and the few administrators there did not take us seriously - they choose to argue against the project instead of hearing our concerns,” Rotter said. Students are learning a great deal about the environment as the work inside and out on the Native Plants Project at NMU“Our next step will be to keep collecting signatures so by December when the proposal comes to the NMU Board of Trustees we can hand them copies of all the signatures and a letter from student leaders with our concerns,” Rotter said.Rotter is asking the public and students to inundate NMU administration officials with emails requesting that the Native Plant Project be spared.People can email NMU President Les Wong at: wong@nmu.eduThe email of NMU Provost Susan Koch is:skoch@nmu.edu"Their job is to help us obtain a good education and we think that it is essential that they keep educational opportunities like the native plant study area in tack," Rotter said."The students want the study area, what we have to do now is make sure the administration hears our voices."Rotter said the Native Plant Project has a wide range of long-term study and future "research value."There are 45 two-meter research plots available to students and faculty for either undergraduate or graduate level research studies, Rotter said."The plots are currently being used for native plant propagation and seed source," Rotter said. The students have received support and/or technical assistance (including memorandums of agreement) from numerous agencies including the Hiawatha National Forest (U.S. Forest Service) and the National Weather Service (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the Superior Watershed Partnership, Upper Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council, The Nature Conservancy, the Seaborg Center's Upward Bound Math and Science Program and many members of the public and NMU students, faculty and staff.Funding has been provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes National Program Office ($18,000), Northern Michigan University (approx. $6,000 for water line/cedar edging) and recently the NMU Development Fund. The five-acre Native Plants Project is located on the northside of the Northern Michigan University campus. (NMU Native Plant Project Photos by Professor Dr. Ronald Sundell)Future projects being considered include small wind turbine and solar panel demonstration sites, areas set aside depicting uses of native plants by Native Americans, a greenhouse dedicated to native plants propagation and research; and established viewing areas, trails, and signs.Rotter can be reached by calling 231-250-3061 or email: mrotter@nmu.eduThe NMU EK Student team can be reached by calling 906-475-5068 or email: earthkeeper@charter.netThe project professor Dr. Ronald Sundell can be reached by calling 906-227-1359 or email: rsundell@nmu.edu

2007 Earth Keeper Energy Summit Inspires Hundreds To Reduce Power Consumption
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 04:49:27 06/17/07
(Marquette, Michigan) - Business owners, clergy and homeowners from across northern Michigan were given numerous tips on reducing their utility bills during the 2007 Earth Keeper Energy Summit including the latest on an upcoming vote in the state legislature that would send wind-generated electricity to all residents.About 100 people attended the day-long conference on Wednesday June 13, 2007 in Marquete, Michigan sponsored by the Superior Watershed Partnership in cooperation with the Cedar Tree Institute. The Marquette-based non-profits founded the Earth Keeper Initiative in 2004.Most of those attending said they plan to join nearly 500 northern Michigan businesses, churches, temples and homes that recently began cutting energy costs and are expected to save millions of dollars in power and water costs over the next three years as part of the new Earth Keeper conservation project, according to Carl Lindquist, executive director of the Superior Watershed Partnership in Marquette. The Earth Keeper Initiative has numerous ongoing environmental projects including the annual Earth Day clean sweeps across northern Michigan that have collected about 370 tons of household hazardous waste for recycling or proper disposal. The Earth Keepers have 140 participating churches/temples and a volunteer army of over 400 people."We are taking all the energy of the Earth Keepers across the Upper Peninsula and we are focusing that energy on energy conservation and climate change because that is where it all starts," Lindquist told participantsTwo senior members of the Sharon Lutheran Church council in Bessemer drove the three hours to Marquette to attend the energy summit to take home ideas on reducing water and power bills in the 75-year-old church while protecting the planet."We need an energy audit - we've looked for a long time for someone who does this and we haven't found anyone," said Arline Waurio of Bessemer, who also plans to have an energy audit of an 80-acre family farm that she manages. "I am on a limited budget - however I can save energy I will do it."Retired teacher Betsy Slabaugh of Bessemer said "just conserving the earth's resources is so important - I have an awareness about saving the earth's resources and I try to pass that on to everybody."Four churches and one parish house in the western U.P. spend about $50,000 a year on energy, a bill the pastor wants to reduce."I believe it's very important for our congregations to take a leading role in the whole awareness of environmental issues and consequences," said Pastor Francis Strong, a pastor at Christ Lutheran Parish - a group of four churches in Ironwood. "I am looking for ways for our churches to save money by being more efficient."The one-year-old Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper Student Team spread the word about the energy summit around campus and that attracted several current and former students."I am into alternative energies and I am interested in how people are using their alternative energies in the Upper Peninsula," said Birmingham, MI native Jennifer Riley, 23, who recently graduated from Northern Michigan University with a major in environmental conservation."We use so much energy with the way we live, and with global warming - it's terrible - and informing the public is the first step," said Riley who took classes in solar and wind power. One of the most popular exhibits demonstrated various types of energy saving lightbulbs. The first 35 people at the conference were given compact florescent lightbulbs.Participants heard from several groups that do no-cost and low-cost energy audits including Michigan Interfaith Power and Light. "Dollars saved on energy" can be spent on humanitarian projects or prevent important programs from being cut.Energy conservation saves money "that can be directed for feeding the hungry, paying just salaries and advancing your mission," said Father Charles Morris, director of Michigan Interfaith Power and Light. The energy audits can have a big impact on the strained budgets of some of Michigan's oldest and biggest churches.Congregations in inner cities, and rural areas, inhabit the oldest and most energy inefficient buildings yet they serve the areas of greatest human need and have the fewest resources coming in - it's a triple whammy," said Rev. Morris, who has wind turbines that power part of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and solar water heaters at his home in Wyandotte, MISchools, government buildings, and businesses can save energy and money by watching "the more mundane things" and using preventative maintenance check lists. "Some of the best things you can do is just keeping system operating efficiently - the savings really multiply fast when you just keep things operating up to snuff - like keeping thermostats set right keep boilers tuned up," said Kevin Cook of Rebuild Michigan. The president of an Upper Peninsula company in a wind power partnership encouraged participants to ask their legislators to support the Michigan Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS)."The (RPS) would require utilities across Michigan to buy power and diversify the way we make and use power in this country - 23 states already have that law and Michigan does not," said Rich VanderVeen, president of Mackinaw Power."This bill would give the authority to the Michigan Public Service Commission to require the utilities to move forward" on wind power and level the playing field for independent power producers, VanderVeen said. The Michigan House Energy Committee is expected to vote on the RPS next Wednesday (June 20, 2007) and go before the entire House by the Fourth of July, followed by senate action, VanderVeen said."I hope one of the outcomes of this energy summit is a united voice to Michigan legislators to support renewable energy," said VanderVeen, adding northern Michigan lawmakers understand wind power would have a "social, ecological and financial benefit to Marquette and the Upper Peninsula.VanderVeen said the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) has been supportive of wind energy but the idea has met resistance from the Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy power companies."The incumbent utilities in the lower Peninsula have opposed this - they don't like competition - they want to run the show themselves," said VanderVeen, although his company currently has a "pilot project" with Consumers Energy "that's not a very good deal for the independent power producers."The Mackinac City Wind Farm is owned by a partnership and has two wind turbines that have been operating since December 2001 that have "put out more than 15 million kilowatt hours" in electricity, VanderVeen said. "The wind turbines have operated 98 percent of the time."Michigan's only other wind turbine is owned by Traverse City Light and Power, he said.VanderVeen would like to see the three wind turbines in Michigan increased to 2,500 high-tech wind turbines built in areas that are windy and close to the power grid."The power goes right on the grid, so everyone in Michigan gets a little bit of that," through an agreement with Consumer's Energy and the International Grid Company," VanderVeen said."We are putting out good clean power with no emissions," VanderVeen said."The U.S. Department of Energy thinks we could put out as much as 5,000 megawatts of wind power and that would be enough for 250,000 homes and it would offset three tons of coal per home," VanderVeen said.Participants heard details about a federally funded program in Michigan that provides tips and resources on energy conservation for new construction projects, energy assessments for homeowners and valuable help for low-income residents."We received a grant to replace 115 furnaces in Michigan," said T.J. Brown, project coordinator for Northern Options in Marquette, one of eight non-profit energy demonstration centers across Michigan that receive federal funds through the state."This is the third year of the program and in the U.P. we have 30 furnaces that are being replaced - we get our referrals through the Salvation Army, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and community action agencies," Brown said, adding they give no-charge workshops on weather-proofing, energy conservation, and other topics to schools, churches and civic clubs. The bishops/leaders of nine faith traditions signed the Earth Keeper Covenant in 2004 pledging to actively protect the environment and reach out to American Indian tribes."This conference today is like a flower that has bloomed out of years of work," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, executive director of the Cedar Tree Institute and Earth Keeper Initiative co-founder. "We feel something very, very important is happening and we are a part of it."The Earth Keeper team has at least two members from each of nine faith traditions (Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, and Zen Buddhist). The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is a sponsor of the annual Earth Keeper Clean Sweep. For more information contact the Superior Watershed Partnership at 906-228-6095 (or Earth Keeper volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson at 906-475-5068).The Superior Watershed Partnershiphttp://www.superiorwatersheds.orgThe Cedar Tree Institute:http://www.cedartreeinstitute.com/The Lake Superior Interfaith Communication Network:http://www.lakesuperiorinterfaith.com/Earth Keeper TV:http://earthkeepers.blip.tv/Earth Keeper Energy Summit related websites:The Michigan Interfaith Power and Lighthttp://www.miipl.org/Great Watershttp://www.greatwaters.net/Wind Power website - Michigan projectshttp://www.awea.org/projects/michigan.htmlMackinaw Powerhttp://www.mackinawpower.com

Millions In Energy Savings At 500 Michigan Businesses Churches Homes
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 08:14:53 06/09/07
Millions of dollars in savings on energy, water bills expected for 500 businesses, churches, and homes involved in new conservation projectEarth Keeper Energy Summit: Everyone invited to free conference next week that provides ways to cut energy and water consumption across northern Michigan(Marquette, Michigan) - Nearly 500 northern Michigan businesses, churches and homes are expected to save millions of dollars in power and water costs as part of a new conservation initiative that will be discussed Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at a free Earth Keeper energy summit in Marquette.Earth Keeper Initiative volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story.Everyone is encouraged to attend the free energy summit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday June 13, 2007 at the UpFront and Company restaurant in Marquette. The conference will include presentations on energy conservation and alternative sustainable energies, according to Carl Lindquist, executive director of the Superior Watershed Partnership in Marquette. The Earth Keeper conference is sponsored by the Super Watershed Partnership in cooperation with the Cedar Tree Institute. The two Marquette-based non-profit organizations founded the Earth Keeper Initiative in 2004 that has numerous ongoing environmental projects including the annual Earth Day clean sweeps across northern Michigan that have collected about 370 tons of household hazardous waste for recycling or proper disposal.About 500 Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan businesses, churches/temples, and individuals have already started conserving energy and organizers are hoping the free conference will encourage others to join the effort by learning a wide range of techniques to reduce energy and water consumption. The Superior Watershed Partnership will help schedule on-site energy audits for participants to identify ways of reducing their water and power bills."Nobody wants to be spending more money on energy that they need to be," Linquist said, adding that energy audits leads to an average 30 percent reduction in power usage. In addition to cost savings, Lindquist said U.P. businesses will become known for being environmentally-friendly."National studies show that over 80 percent of tourists prefer to give their business to a green business that has adopted energy and water conservation practices," Lindquist said. The energy summit will include detailed information on how to reduce energy costs including "an energy audit to find out where you are losing heat, where your are losing energy, where you could be saving not only energy but money; and learn about other services that are available through the Superior Watershed Partnership and our partner organizations," Lindquist said.About 60 participants including 30 churches have already confirmed they are going to attend the conference, Lindquist said adding that an RSVP is encouraged but not mandatory."We are also having a segment on sustainable alternative energy resources such as wind power," Lindquist said. "I think it is exciting that not only businesses but that churches and participating households get involved and learning more about how to conserve energy, conserve water and help protect quality of life here in the Upper Peninsula."By reducing energy consumption, U.P. residents are doing their part to fight global warming."Energy conservation has many benefits we hear a lot about climate change these days and it's something we can do at the local and regional levels to address these global issues and another great incentive is saving money," Lindquist said. "It all ties into climate change and carbon emissions."Over 140 churches/temples who participate in the annual interfaith Earth Keeper Clean Sweep will soon reduce their power and water bills, said Rev. John Magnuson, executive director of the Cedar Tree Institute."We believe that energy audits of our faith community buildings, churches and communities will reduce (power and water) costs, increase efficiency of the use of fuels, and promote greening," said Rev. Magnuson, co-founder of the Earth Keeper Initiative. The cost savings allow churches/temples to spend the money on other worthwhile causes, Rev. Magnuson said.We are going to do audits of local churches and in our estimates we believe that at the 250 churches and temples participating - we could save over three years - between $800,000 and a million dollars worth of energy costs which then could be used for missions and better use of those monies in terms of contributing to the ministries and visions of our respective faith communities, Rev. Magnuson."This is a sense of celebration about where we live, also a deeper responsibility that in the long run will benefit everybody in terms of living more reverently and frugally and appropriately with the environment," Rev. Magnuson said. The leaders of the nine Earth Keeper faith communities signed the Earth Keeper Covenant pledging to protect the environment and reach out to American Indian tribes. The faith communities are Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, and Zen Buddhist. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community is a sponsor of the annual Earth Keeper Clean sweep.Members of "nine different faith traditions from over 250 parishes in the U.P. will gather in Marquette and we will be talking about energy conservation," Rev. Magnuson said. "This energy conference is another step in a deepening awareness, a deepening consciousness of the faith communities commitment to stewardship for the earth and for the environment."Those attending the energy conference will learn "a number of easy steps to conserve energy such as changing to more energy efficient light bulbs and appliances," Lindquist said. The Superior Watershed Partnership is giving compact florescent light bulbs to the first 35 people attending the energy summit."One of the easiest things people can do to conserve energy and save money on their energy bills is by installing compact florescent light bulbs around the house or throughout their business," Lindquist said. "It's a good way to save energy and save money."Earth Keeper Energy Summit presentations include:The Michigan Interfaith Power and Light group that works with lower peninsula churches to dramatically reduce energy consumption and energy bills.Great Waters is a program through Northern Initiatives and the Superior Watershed Partnership that works with over 300 nature tourism businesses to reduce energy and water consumption and increase tourism.Northern Options provides U.P. energy conservation services.Mackinaw Wind Power uses windmills to generate electricity offering alternative energy options. For more information on the energy summit contact the Superior Watershed Partnership at 906-228-6095 or visit their website. The Superior Watershed Partnership:http://www.superiorwatersheds.org----Other Earth Keeper related website addresses are:The Cedar Tree Institute:http://www.cedartreeinstitute.com/The Lake Superior Interfaith Communication Network:http://www.lakesuperiorinterfaith.com/Earth Keeper TV:http://earthkeepers.blip.tv/
