Human motor cortex, avatars and virtual reality

TEDxSF - Jaron Lanier - You Are Not a Gadget Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010. His book You Are Not a Gadget was released in early 2010 by Knopf in the USA and Penguin in the UK. He writes and speaks on numerous topics, including high-technology business, the social impact of technological practices, the philosophy of consciousness and information, Internet politics, and the future of humanism. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Discover (where he has been a columnist), The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Harpers Magazine, The Sciences, Wired Magazine (where he was a founding contributing editor), and Scientific American. He has edited special "future" issues of SPIN and Civilization magazines. He is one of the 100 "remarkable people" of the Global Business Network. In 2005 Lanier was selected as one of the top one hundred public intellectuals in the world by readers of Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines. Jaron begins this talk by playing an 8000 year old Laotian instrument called a Can (sp), and asserts that is it the first binary code technology: an orderly row of objects that are either on or off. He moves into his first hand account of his lab's invention of avatars, and where they might be going. He stands by his 30 year prediction that virtual reality will mature in 2020 or 2025. Jaron's wide ranging talk goes into the potential of leveraging the human motor cortex, avatars and virtual reality ..

Gerald Celente: MF Global Looted Customers' Accounts Via Internal Bank Run 4/4
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 05:12:52 11/18/11
Big players got warning ahead of time that financial broker was set to collapse Paul Joseph Watson http://www.infowars.com/ http://www.prisonplanet.tv/ Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Days before the doomed financial broker filed for bankruptcy, MF Global conducted "unexplained wire transfers" that led to a $900 million shortfall in client funds, leading customers like Gerald Celente to learn that their accounts had been looted and setting the precedent for internal bank runs as more big firms go bust. According to Bloomberg, "Examiners from CME Group Inc., the world's largest futures exchange, found unexplained wire transfers at MF Global Inc. and a $900 million shortfall in client funds during the weekend the failing broker was talking with possible buyers, a person briefed on the matter said." CME noticed the missing funds on October 30, but MF Global didn't inform the Commodity Futures Trading Commission until the day after, suggesting that the transfers were made, "in a manner that may have been designed to avoid detection," according to CME. The suspicious cash movements are now being probed by the U.S. Justice Department. MF Global trustee James Giddens said in a court filing yesterday that customers would get back 60 per cent of their account funds, prompting fury amongst clients, many of whom used their accounts for business collateral and living expenses. Although individuals were burned by the broker's downfall, larger clients were protected from the fallout because they had the miraculous fortune of withdrawing all their funds just weeks before the collapse. "Both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were charged with overseeing MF Global, their clearing member. If we are to believe them, they had no idea of any difficulties within the firm before customer accounts went missing just a few days before the collapse. But someone clearly knew of the cratering positions and imminent collapse of MF Global, as billions of dollars of accounts were "coincidentally" withdrawn," writes Huffington Post's Daniel Dicker, noting how funds in accounts owned by the billionaire Koch brothers were withdrawn just in time, clearly suggesting that big players got a "heads up" that MF Global was going down. Although the collapse of MF Global was assured when it came to light that the broker was heavily exposed to the European debt crisis, causing the broker's stock price to plummet, Fox Business reports that numerous circumstances indicate the downfall was in the works weeks before, drawing attention to the fact that employees didn't receive commissions for the third quarter and were fired two weeks before the firm filed for bankruptcy. http://www.infowars.com/mf-global-looted-customers-accounts-via-internal-bank...

Ray Kurzweil: How Far to Immortality?
[LESS INFO] 72 VIEWS | ADDED 19:18:28 03/23/11
Author, inventor, and futurist Ray Kurzweil explains that even though immortality may seem a far-off goal, it could be achievable by people who are alive today. He argues that immortality will come not from a silver bullet cure for aging, but rather a series of "bridges" that will eventually lead to eternal life.

On November 30th and December 1st, 2010, at the TIME Conference Center in New York City, many of the most innovative people and organizations in the science and technology world came together for an historic gathering - the 2010 World Technology Summit and Awards, the eighth Summit and ninth Awards thus far! - to celebrate each other's accomplishments; to explore what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies; and to create the kinds of serendipitous relationships that create the future.
The majority of Summit participants were either current WTN members (primarily winners/finalists from previous World Technology Awards cycles, as selected by their peers as those doing the innovative work of "the greatest likely long-term significance") or 2010 World Technology Award nominees. A combination of keynote talks, panel discussions, and breakout sessions... and potentially-career-altering-networking opportunities over two days concluded with a gala black-tie Awards ceremony on the second night. - World Technology Summit and Awards
Ray Kurzweil has been described as "the restless genius" by the Wall Street Journal, and "the ultimate thinking machine" by Forbes. Inc. magazine ranked him #8 among entrepreneurs in the United States, calling him the "rightful heir to Thomas Edison," and PBS included Kurzweil as one of 16 "revolutionaries who made America." As one of the leading inventors of our time, Kurzweil was the principal developer of the first CCD flat-bed scanner, the first omni-font optical character recognition, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, the first music synthesizer capable of recreating the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition. Kurzweil has written six books, four of which have been national best sellers. Kurzweil's latest book, The Singularity is Near, was a New York Times best seller, and has been the #1 book on Amazon in both science and philosophy.

Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig will speak on the corrosive effects of money in politics and potential remedies to the problem. For much of his career Lessig has focused on law and technology, and his current work addresses the question of "institutional corruption," influences that weaken the effectiveness of an institution and public trust. He is the author of Remix (2008), Code v2 (2007), Free Culture (2004), The Future of Ideas (2001) and Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (1999) and has served as lead counsel in a number of important cases marking the boundaries of copyright law in a digital age. The talk will be followed by a panel discussion including Sherri Greenberg (UT Center for Politics and Governance, LBJ School of Public Affairs), Steve Bickerstaff (UT Law School), and Brian Roberts (UT Department of Government). Sponsored by the Coffee Party-Austin Chapter. This is a zgraphix production. Filmed, Edited & Produced for Austin Indymedia by Jeff Zavala. http://zgraphix.org http://austin.indymedia.org

Shane Harris - The Watchers: The Rise of America's Surveillance State
[LESS INFO] 21 VIEWS | ADDED 00:14:10 03/13/10
Shane Harris, a reporter for National Journal, talks about The Watchers: The Rise of America's Surveillance State.
Harris charts the rise of America's surveillance state over the past 25 years and highlights a dangerous paradox: he argues the government's strategy has made it harder to catch terrorists and easier to spy on civilians.
In 1983, Admiral John Poindexter, President Reagan’s National Security Advisor, realized that the U.S. might have prevented the terrorist massacre of 241 Marines in Beirut, if intelligence agencies could have analyzed in real time the data they had on the attackers. Poindexter poured technical know-how and government funds into his dream–a system that would sift reams of information for signs of terrorist activity. Decades later, that elusive dream still captivates Washington. After 9/11, Poindexter returned to government with a controversial program, called Total Information Awareness, to detect the next attack. Today it has evolved into a secretly funded operation that can gather a trove of personal information on every American and millions of others worldwide.
Despite billions of dollars spent on this quest since the Reagan era, we still can’t discern future threats in the vast data cloud that surrounds us all. But the government can now spy on its citizens with an ease that was impossible-and illegal-just a few years ago. Drawing on unprecedented access to the people who pioneered this high-tech spycraft, Harris shows how it has moved from the province of right-wing technocrats into the mainstream, becoming a cornerstone of the Obama administration’s war on terror.
