Spitzer Finds Unusual Structures on This Week @ NASA
Astronomers using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have, for the first time, discovered buckyballs in a solid form in space: around a pair of stars 65-hundred light-years from Earth. Until now, the microscopic carbon spheres had been found only in gas form. Named for their resemblance to the geodesic domes drawn by late architect Buckminster Fuller, buckyballs are made up of 60 carbon molecules arranged into a hollow sphere, like a soccer ball. Their unusual structure makes them ideal candidates for electrical and chemical applications on Earth, including superconducting materials, medicines, water purification and armor. From Germany - Moderate alcohol consumption may lower risk of dementia, according to a report published in Age and Ageing. Researchers followed over 3,300 patients for three years, finding that light to moderate alcohol consumption was significantly associated with reduced occurrence of both dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
From Boston - Research presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections describes a new drug regimen that can lower mother to infant HIV transmission. Researchers studied nearly 1700 infants born to mothers who did not know they were HIV positive until in labor. They found that adding nevirapine or lamivudine plus nelfinavir to standard ZDV treatment cut transmission risk by over 50%.
And finally, from Michigan - Scientists have discovered a potential target to treat aggressive prostate cancer, according to a report published in Science Translational Medicine . Researchers gave mice a monoclonal antibody that targeted the molecule SPINK1 and found that the rodent's tumors shrank by 60%.

From the UK - A new report published in Blood identifies biomarkers associated with fatal blood clots. Scientists identified a new molecule that impacts platelet activity, finding that certain genetic differences related to this molecule increase risk of blood clots.
From the UK - Research published in Emergency Medicine Journal connects rising temperatures to hospital admissions in children. Studying almost 6,000 patients, researchers found that every 5 degree Celsius rise in temperature resulted in a 10% increase in serious injury hospital admissions among children.
And finally, from the Netherlands - Late diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis increases likelihood of poor outcomes, according to a report published Arthritis & Rheumatism . Researchers studied over 1600 early arthritis patients, finding that delayed diagnosis resulted in more joint destruction and decreased chances of remission.

From San Francisco - According to research published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the simplified version of the Framingham heart risk calculation may actually miscategorize a number of patients. Comparing the simplified points based system to the original calculation, researchers found that 15% of subjects are placed into a different risk category using the point system.
From Germany - The presence of a particular micro-RNA molecule plays a role in lung cancer malignancy. In an article published in the journal Molecular Cancer Research, scientists found that the lower concentration of this micro-RNA molecule (miR-200c) the more likely the cancer would spread.s
From California - The California Department of Public Health has reported 3,834 confirmed and suspected cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, in the state. This is 7 times more than the same period in 2009. The Public Health Agency of Canada released a Travel Health Notice reminding travelers to make sure their vaccination is up to date.

From Boston - Stress during pregnancy may increase risk of asthma in the child, according to a report published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine . Researchers studied 557 families, analyzing the child's umbilical cord for cytokines--a molecule that allows cells of the immune system to communicate with one another. They found varying levels of cytokines in mothers who lived or worked in a high stress environment, an aspect researchers believe increases the child's risk of allergy and asthma later in life.
From Australia - According to another report published American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine , scientists have developed a technique that may be able to reduce tobacco smoke damage to the lungs. Researchers blocked the protein GM-CSF in one group of mice, while another served as controls. Exposing both groups to cigarette smoke, researchers found that the mice without the protein suffered significantly less lung inflammation than controls.
And finally, from France - The element Selenium may have a protective effect against diabetes, according to a report published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism . Researchers studied over 1000 adults for nine years, finding that men with the highest selenium concentrations in their blood had a much lower incidence of dysglycemia (blood sugar metabolism disorders such as diabetes.)

http://www.killlies.com in 1990, I began the first new human research with psychedelic, or hallucinogenic, drugs in the United States in over 20 years. These studies investigated the effects of N, N-dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, an extremely short-acting and powerful psychedelic. During the project\'s five years, I administered approximately 400 doses of DMT to 60 human volunteers. This research took place at the University of New Mexico\'s School of Medicine in Albuquerque, where I was tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry. I was drawn to DMT because of its presence in all of our bodies. Perhaps excessive DMT production, coming from the mysterious pineal gland RICK STRASSMANS

Pharmaceutical research and development is a complex endeavor. It often takes up to 14 years and a billion dollars of investment to turn a molecule into a medicine that saves patients lives. For every 10 compounds that show promise, just one new drug makes it to the market. ProducedforJohnsonJohnson
