Matt Rutherford Around the Americas Return
[LESS INFO] 122 VIEWS | ADDED 01:30:08 04/26/12
On April 21st, 2012, Matt Rutherford , 31, sailed into his homeport of Annapolis, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay after completing a non-stop, 314 day 27,000 mile solo circumnavigation of North and South America - the first such solo voyage ever in a small sailboat. He made the voyage in a 27 foot sloop, St. Brendan, named after a 6th century explorer. The 1970, 42 year old, Swedish built Albin-Vega sailboat is a sturdy vessel, but not one designed for the rigors of the Northwest Passage and Cape Horn. Rutherford had actually crossed his own start line at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near Norfolk, Virginia. But he was determined not to step foot on land until he sailed up the Bay to his homeport of Annapolis. Dozens of boats escorted Rutherford into the harbor where family, friends, and hundreds of spectators waited to greet him at the City Dock. After stepping off his vessel, Rutherford shared brief hugs with his Mom and Dad. He was then escorted to a reception ceremony hosted by sailing legend, Gary Jobson, and attended by the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Annapolis, and many other dignitaries. After receiving numerous awards in recognition of his record-breaking voyage, Matt met with the press for an extend news conference. Rutherford undertook the trip for personal accomplishment and in support of C.R.A.B., Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating - a nonprofit that provides the joy and challenge of sailing to individuals with disabilities. You can donate to C.R.A.B. online at www.crabsailing.org . For more information about Matt and his voyage, visit www.solotheamericas.org . Matt’s goal was to raise $250,000 for C.R.A.B : ten dollars for every mile of his record-setting circumnavigation of the Americas. With $80,000 raised to date and more pledges coming in following his successful return, Matt is committed to translating his personal triumph into financial support for C.R.A.B and disabled sailors. TheSailingChannel is planning to produce a major documentary about Matt's solo around the Americas voyage.

OWS M17: 2pm Liberty St Police Melee: Six month mark at Zuccotti Pt 1

OWS M17: 2pm Liberty St Police Melee: Six month mark at Zuccotti Pt 1 New York, March 17, 2012--- Occupy Wall Street activists, many of them original occupiers, celebrate the six month mark at Zuccotti, birthplace of the movement and site of the first US encampment, from September 17 until the police raid on November 15. It's a time for song and dance, greeting friends, welcoming protesters from other cities. Inside the park, American University researchers conduct a survey on protester interactions with the police. Direct Action Flaneurs , an art project, type their reflections on Imperial manual typewriters. Contrary to popular belief, OWS GAs, working group meetings, activities and direct actions have continued unabated over the winter months, both online and throughout the city at 60 Wall Street, Bryant Square, Foley Square, Tompkins Square and Washington Square. Video: on Broadway near the Mark Di Suvero sculpture, Ted shares info about a new upstate self-sustaining farming project to feed Occupy; a band strikes up. But at about 2pm, around the corner on Liberty Street, the mood is not so festive: on the sidewalk side of the sloping park wall, a scuffle erupts into a police melee; an angry crowd challenges arrests and the conduct of certain police officers. The scuffle footage shown here is an unedited camera take; shortly after, Zachary Kamel gives an account of how the scuffle began. For more info about this channel send message via You Tube. Tibetan Prime Minister (Kalon Tripa) Statement on Losar Tibetan New Year Feb 22, 2012
Thumbs Up Like + Share -Click here for more Tibet videos www.youtube.com Tashi Delek to Tibetans and friends around the world! Warm Losar greetings from Dharamsala, which falls on February 22. As requested, please do not celebrate Losar this year, but do observe traditional and spiritual rituals by going to the monastery, making offerings, and lighting butter lamps for all those Tibetans inside Tibet who have sacrificed and suffered under the repressive policies of the Chinese government. News from Tibet continues to be grim. Tibet is virtually sealed off with foreigners not allowed to enter. Even Chinese tourists are prevented from visiting Tibet, and the military buildup is very heavy. [The Chinese government has launched a massive crackdown on Tibetans who visited India for the Kalachakra Teachings. Several hundred Tibetans have been detained and are being forced to undergo political re-education. Please see the news release from Human Rights Watch] . We are extremely worried over what is happening and what might happen inside Tibet. Under such circumstances, please do pray for all Tibetans inside Tibet especially on the third, eight, tenth and fifteenth day of Losar, as these are auspicious days. March 10, our National Uprising Day, is coming up soon. There will be many other activities as well where Tibetans and our friends will be requested to participate. Please remember and observe the guidelines issued by CTA, which is to organize and participate in events ... From: TibetArchive Views: 2026 19 ratings Time: 04:26 More in News & Politics
