From Ptolemy to Pilgrimage: Images of Late Antiquity in Geography, Travel & Cartography
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 20:29:36 01/30/12
A survey of Greek and Latin geographical tradition during Late Antiquity (c. 200-600 CE), when various genres of travel narrative rose to prominence. Scott Johnson links this mode of writing to the transition from a pagan/Greco-Roman world to a Christian one as new ways of explaining the known world mixed the classical inheritance with biblical and early Christian history. This mixture was to influence directly the new institution of Christian pilgrimage, while setting a foundation of religious practice for Byzantium, Islam and the western Middle Ages. Speaker Biography: Scott Johnson received his doctorate in classics from the University of Oxford in 2005. He is a postdoctoral teaching Fellow in Byzantine Greek at Georgetown University and Dumbarton Oaks. He has been a junior fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows (2004-07), a fellow in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks (2009-10), and a Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress (2010-11). His current research project, "All the World's Knowledge: Geographical Thought in Late Antiquity and Byzantium," is designed to form the basis of his next book. Technology and the Human Body - Bionics
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 23:00:00 01/15/12
TEDxSF - Berkeley Bionics - Merging Technology and the Human Body More than anything else, Eythor Bender is a team builder. You want to be on his team. And that's good news for bionics, a nascent industry that Eythor has championed and grown, taking bionic prosthetics from unconventional approaches to sustainable, approved products that merge man and machine, and enhance individuals' participation in their community. Today and as CEO of Berkeley Bionics -- developer and maker of wearable robots - Eythor is leading his company's charge to boost everyone's potential through personal bionics. This year, Berkeley Bionics is introducing two new exoskeletons to the market that augment mobility, strength and endurance: eLEGS powers wheelchair users up to get them standing and walking again; and HULCTM (Human Universal Load Carrier) enables users to carry up to 200 lbs. for hours and over all terrains, while reducing the likelihood of back-injuries. Eythor is a native of Iceland, with a Masters in Business and Economics from Germany, where he began his career with Hewlett Packard in medical diagnostics and computer imaging. He went on to join Nordic-European Ossur, which pioneered the field of commercial bionics. Eythor led Ossur's Americas division, taking it from a start-up to a world leader in the field of wearable, non-invasive technologies designed for amputees, injury prevention, rehabilitation and pain relief. He lives in San Francisco and most recently spoke at TED2011 in Long Beach, California. event video by: repertoireproductions.com Background information Bionics (also known as biomimicry, biomimetics, bio-inspiration, biognosis, and close to bionical creativity engineering) is the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology. The word bionic was coined by Jack E. Steele in 1958, possibly originating from the technical term bion (pronounced bee-on) (from Ancient Greek: βίοĎ), meaning 'unit of life' and the suffix -ic, meaning 'like' or 'in the manner of', hence 'like life'. Some dictionaries, however, explain the word as being formed as a portmanteau from biology + electronics. It was popularized by the 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman, which were influenced by Steele's work, and feature humans given superhuman powers by electromechanical implants. The transfer of technology between lifeforms and manufactures is, according to proponents of bionic technology, desirable because evolutionary pressure typically forces living organisms, including fauna and flora, to become highly optimized and efficient. A classical example is the development of dirt- and water-repellent paint (coating) from the observation that the surface of the lotus flower plant is practically unsticky for anything (the lotus effect). The term "biomimetic" is preferred when reference is made to chemical reactions. In that domain, biomimetic chemistry refers to reactions that, in nature, involve biological macromolecules (for example, enzymes or nucleic acids) whose chemistry can be replicated using much smaller molecules in vitro. Examples of bionics in engineering include the hulls of boats imitating the thick skin of dolphins; sonar, radar, and medical ultrasound imaging imitating the echolocation of bats. In the field of computer science, the study of bionics has produced artificial neurons, artificial neural networks, and swarm intelligence. Evolutionary computation was also motivated by bionics ideas but it took the idea further by simulating evolution in silico and producing well-optimized solutions that had never appeared in nature. It is estimated by Julian Vincent, professor of biomimetics at the University of Bath's department of mechanical engineering (Biomimetics group), that "at present there is only a 12% overlap between biology and technology in terms of the mechanisms used". Visual and Auditory Learning

TEDxManhattanBeach - Melanie West - Visual and Auditory Learning - How To Teach It Talk title: Visual and auditory learning -- how to teach it When Melanie studied chemistry as a sophomore in college, she faced a problem in understanding. Although she read words in her textbook over and over, no meaning seemed to come through to her. She felt an inability to learn from that textbook - she was unable to form pictures of the information in her mind. Years later as an educational psychologist Melanie recognized a similar pattern in students having trouble learning. Children are taught to read, write and memorize, but these activities are separate from learning. Rote memorization can have a crippling effect on the developing brain for children who are "picture thinkers." The same children can experience astonishing improvements in academic performance when given the opportunity to "see learning." Melanie West is an educational psychologist and the author of The Right Side of Learning. She specializes in designing techniques that stimulate both sides of the brain, to keep children in emotional and neurological balance while learning. She firmly believes that in a world of left-brain curricula, some of the most intelligent and creative thinkers are underachieving and misunderstood. Melanie's mission is to show parents and teachers alike that there is no such thing as an average student. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like

Multiphase Thermoelectric Converter - Turning Waste Heat into Usable Electric Power
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 23:00:00 01/01/12
The Multiphase Thermoelectric Converter is a direct thermal-to-electrical energy conversion system designed in order to harvest most of the waste heat energy efficiently into electricity, reducing weight and size of space heat radiators, making fusion-powered space propulsion more energy-efficient than ever. The Multiphase Thermoelectric Converter consists of two opposing twisting electromagnetic forces, forming two contra-aligned electrodynamic vortices, for axially and radially compressing a hot ionized gas F=q(v Ă B) forcing it to expand longitudinally transferring electrodynamically F=i(L Ă B) Îľ=(Bâv sinθ) its energy to a multiphase electrical system to be effectively harvested by diode rectifiers. Wherein, the phase rotation keeps hot plasma centered far from electromagnetic coils, which allow to induce high pressure and withstand very high temperatures for virtually getting closer to the maximum efficiency Ρ=1-(TC/TH), e.g. TC=300K, TH=30000K, Ρ%=99%. Together with the Aneutronic Reactor and Electrodynamic Thrusters, it is to form the most perfect triad for providing a high degree of cleanliness and efficiency for deep space propulsion, with practically no thermal and radioactive waste.
