New Town Drunks - "Always Home": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
New Town Drunks music has been described as New Vaudeville, Rock and Roll Cabaret, Stream of Consciousness Folk Rock, a musical Bonnie and Clyde and other less clear descriptions. At the core of it is the show-stopping voice and stage presence of lead singer Diane Koistinen, the versatile Spanish guitar of Roberto Cofresi and a batch of carefully crafted songs, but there is always more to every performance, melodrama, mystery, comedy, tragedy, surprises... and they always seem to find themselves in the company of great talent. Who will join them on stage at SXSW? Come to the No More Fake Labels showcase to find out. After having lived in NYC, Texas, Mexico, Detroit and Puerto Rico, Diane and Roberto settled in Chapel Hill NC where they've been playing as New Town Drunks since 2004. As they head back to their old stomping grounds in Texas (where in the 90s, Diane played with quirky pop rock act, deSchmog and Roberto with psych rock act, Dry Nod) they are looking forward to meeting up with musicians and friend they haven't seen in some years. New Town Drunks have released 4 records: ...trust us with your car (Hmm Records, 2005) Alive & Drunk (Hmm Records, 2006) The Ballad of Stayed and Gone (Hmm Records, 2009) Going (Tiny Canvas Records, 2011) A new album is set for release in Spring 2012. Cousins - "Speech": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
A Halifax, Nova Scotia born quartet featuring the songs of Aaron Mangle, and his distinguished collaborative ensemble: Dalin Ursenbach (Crowd Power), Pat Ryan (Room Doom), and Andy March (Museum Pieces). Calling up the spirit of underground folk and rock, Mangles croons with harrowing thrushy whispers and bellows brightly. The group likewise explodes with anarchic grunge and also tackles moments of restraint and syncopation. From: sxsw Views: 51 2 ratings Time: 03:32 More in Entertainment

The Dunwells - "I Could Be A King": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
THE DUNWELLS -- BLIND SIGHTED FAITH Utterly natural. There's no more fitting description for both the music of The Dunwells as well as the story of their magical rise from the pubs of Leeds, England to an American record deal and a stunning debut album in just two short years. The group is two brothers, two cousins and totaling five best mates who simply love to sing and play music, and do so together. When they make music, the results exemplify the equation that the sum of the parts can be even greater than the whole. Striking an organic blend between acoustic and electric roots music laced by luscious vocal harmonies by all five members, their songs and sound feel both bracingly fresh while at the same time as warm and familiar as a dear longtime friend. Blind Sighted Faith, the debut album on Playing In Traffic Records, is a timeless yet contemporary collection of 11 captivating and indelible numbers that transcend genres to offer a fresh, richly rooted harvest of listening pleasure. From its opening track, "I Could Be A King," a regal rocker with splashes of modernist Britpop shine, the set is a sumptuous banquet of musical modes. One moves from moments of graceful reflective repose like "Only Me" to the swirling mesmerism of "Follow The Road." The band offers a panoramic collection that seamlessly melds elements of Celtic and American folk, rock, blues, pop and soul into a trademark sound all their own. Whether it's the majestic prayerful plaint of "Oh Lord" or the ... From: sxsw Views: 410 7 ratings Time: 03:48 More in Entertainment

Anthony Seeger, Distinguished Professor of Ethnomusicology and Director of the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive, imparts some of his considerable musical knowledge, and also a song, when he delivers the prestigious 110th Faculty Research Lecture. He looks at the opposing positions of "Don’t pirate my music" and "Knowledge wants to be free" to discuss the more general point that copyright law is only one way among thousands that societies regulate the transmission of and access to knowledge. The lecture is preceded by the UCLA Bluegrass and Old-Time String Ensemble singing, "This Land is Your Land." Series: "UCLA Faculty Research Lectures" [Arts and Music] [Business] [Show ID: 23417]

Higher State - "Song Of The Autumn": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
For over 6 years now, The Higher State have crafted and honed their own unique musical signature: a combination of 60's-style garage psychedelia and folk punk, meshed with full-on vocal harmonies and incisive, thought-provoking lyrics reflecting upon the ever present NOW. Their well-worn travelling shoes have taken the group all over Europe and North America, with appearances at festivals such as the Cavestomp in NYC in 2007 and the Wooly Weekend festival in Montreal in 2009. Their third full-length album, Freakout at the Gallery, was just released in November of 2011 by local Austin label 13 O\' Clock Records. J. Irvin Dally - "Sun Room": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
The psychedelic explorations and folk troubadour inclinations of young Californian J Irvin Dally are informed equally by his nomadic trajectory and his introspective clarity. Dally lived in a variety of climates throughout the country, raised in southern Illinois as a preacher's son, came of age in Colorado, grew in Spain, and found himself in Sacramento and Santa Rosa before setting up permanent shop outside Los Angeles. This transience inspires the sonically transmigratory music he's played since 2005. Self taught and self styled, Dally cut his teeth as a member of Sacramento's Brother before recording bedroom folk expansive enough to knock down all four walls. While rustic vocals, dusty guitar laments, and ornate washes of analog hiss and angelic, dream-like textures are hallmarks of Dally's brand of reverberated mindbending folk, the breadth of his current catalog has reared both grainy pop gems and rollicking experimental suites. His cassette release "The Countryside of Southern Illinois and the Daydreams That Almost Got Me to 19 Years" reveals a single, multi-movement song, admirable in its adventurous spirit and precise focus over the course of 26 minutes. While reminiscent of spirit warriors Jana Hunter and The Incredible String Band, J Irvin Dally is a singular and unique voice -- the sound of exploring guitars and analog instrumentation to its fully realization.
