reelseo.com ► This week our look at the Reel Web covers a bunch of stories, like YouTube's update to the layout for "related videos" after you finish watching one. It also appears that YouTube has changed their algorithm back in July and the update does not seem to favor amateur video creators. And the new movie, Trespass, is releasing on YouTube alongside of it's theatrical release, except with some quality being sacrificed. And this Tuesday YouTube is doing a live feedback Q%A with WillOfDC. Finally, blip.tv released a study they did about their audience's viewing habits over the last 6 months, specifically how it relates how much TV they're watching as opposed to online video. The Ancient Buildings of Pavlopetri - City Beneath the Waves: Pavlopetri - BBC Two
More about this programme: www.bbc.co.uk The complex mix of expert archaeology, underwater robotics and state of the art graphics allowed the team to piece together the secrets of Pavlopetri, producing spectacular results. Here, team from the Australian Centre for Field Robotics take us through how they worked to solve the puzzle of the city, using an autonomous underwater vehicle, the first time such technology has been used on this scale on a submerged site. Throughout the night, the camera took stereo images under the water to judge the distance between the ruins on the sea floor. The robot captured hundreds of thousands of images, in order to build up a 3D model - allowing the team to create views that would be otherwise impossible. The graphics team carefully built up a 3D map from the layout of the ruins and the uncovered artefacts. The final images of Pavlopetri reveal an intricate portrait of the city around 1600 BC; a city at its advanced peak. From: BBC Views: 151 2 ratings Time: 02:56 More in Science & Technology

Schools around the country are spending billions of dollars trying to get more technology in the classroom, but it may not be helping students’ test scores. It’s argued that connected devices and better computers help students learn at their own pace, while standardized testing may be flawed itself. Technology is meant to aid, not replace teaching. In other news, Facebook is developing a translation tool that could help its over 750 million users connect no matter what language they speak. If a post is in a different language than a users’ default, Facebook will translate the text in real-time. And finally, Amazon.com is finally testing a redesign of its website that will make it easier to navigate on a tablet computer. Amazon is also making a big push towards digital content, with the new layout emphasizing purchases of digital goods.

NTN #008: US Selling Off Loser States and Egypt On Talk Show!
[LESS INFO] 19 VIEWS | ADDED 21:37:14 02/01/11
Coming up today: U.S. to sell of underperforming states, Egypt to be on talk show and young terrorists caught in Kentucky.
US To Sell off Underperforming States
According to Satire Wire.com, the U.S is giving in to economic pressure and will sell off 11 underperforming states by the end of the year. The surprise sale is a concession to Republicans who have long demanded the government be run more like a business. The states were chosen based on how much money they received from the feds versus how much they collected in taxes.
Alaska is expected to fetch the highest bid due to its natural resources. Of course this means Sarah Palin will not be eligible to run for President as she will no longer be a US citizen.
With both North and South Dakota on the auction block, plans have been made to move Mount Rushmore to Arkansas finally giving people a reason to visit the state. The US will hold an open house on May 21st and any states that remain unsold by the end of the year may be broken up and used for scrap.

Egypt to be on Talk Show
Cap News has reported that as civilian unrest continues to tear apart Egypt, daytime TV talk show host Steve Wilkos says the country has agreed to appear on his show to discuss their differences. But despite this potentially positive news, rioting and looting carried on in the streets of Egypt as citizens learn that not only are Twitter, Blackberry and Facebook blocked but also, Myspace.

269 - [Tr] Creating Mind Maps using MindNode Pro [Trailer]
[LESS INFO] 125 VIEWS | ADDED 08:21:48 09/23/10
[Trailer for Extra Members Show] This week I take a look at a technique that's received a lot of kudos in both education and business and that's mind mapping.
You can create a mind Map to help you "generate, visualise, structure and classify ideas. and as an aid to studying and organising information, solving problems, making decisions and writing" - Wikipedia.
Wow!
But what is a mind map?
Basically it's a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. It's not a list but an evolving tree like structure that helps you think about the central theme and allows you to visualise the information in a non linear way. Apparently, it matches how our brains work!
This week's show takes you through the basics of mind mapping on the Mac using an application called MindNode Pro. I take a look at the basic concepts and show you how to use MindNode Pro to create beautiful mind maps. Many mind mapping tools produce pretty ugly maps but MindNode Pro is very "Mac like" in that it allows you to produce very clean and elegant mind maps.
But you're not limited to just using mind maps within MindNode Pro, there's a whole host of export options to export your mind map in PDF, FreeMind, Image, HTML and Text formats. Most interestingly, you can also export in OPML allowing you to transfer your MindMaps directly into OmniOutliner 3 and onwards into OmniFocus. Use MindNode to brainstorm and tweak your projects, then import into OmniFocus to track them!
Of course, it would be great to transfer or create MindNode Pro mind maps on the iPhone or iPad. Well you can with MindNode Touch. This contains a subset of the features of MindNode Pro but allows you to simply transfer mind maps created on the Mac onto your iOS device or vice versa. MIndNode Touch also allows you to create new mind maps and amend existing ones on the go.
Finally, I demonstrate an alternative mind mapping application just for the iPad or iPhone - iThoughtsHD
In detail, the show covers:
Introduction to Mind mapping
MindNode Pro Basics
Creating Nodes
Folding Branches
Connection Lines
Formatting Nodes and Branches
Smart Layout
Adding Images, Files and Links
Exporting
Importing into OmniOutliner
Creating an OmniFocus Project
iPhone and iPad Integration
Transferring via eMail
Transferring via WiFi
iThoughtsHD for the iPad
This week's unsponsored show also contains a special 20% discount code for MindNode pro exclusively for ScreenCastsOnline members.

The SketchUp Show #59: Creating Presentations in Google Layout
[LESS INFO] 29 VIEWS | ADDED 21:12:00 02/19/10
in part three of this three part series, Mike shows how to present your final Google SketchUp model using Google LayOut. Once you have a great looking SketchUp model with fancy new skylights installed, its time to show-off your handy work. Lucky for you, SketchUp Pro comes with the LayOut presentation application pre-bundled. In this episode, Mike opens his SketchUp model in LayOut and customizes his presentation with a special logo and title block. Then, he creates a plan view of the skylights complete with dimensions and scale information. Next, he shows how to take advantage of an dynamic skylight component on the Google 3D Warehouse that allows you to see the entire installation process and use that information right inside your LayOut presentation. Finally, Mike adds both SketchUp and pre-rendered images of the lighting conditions inside the home to round out the presentation.

You can win a book in our two contests - the exact rules will be published in the next posting. I continue to work on my project "Access Control". My target is a photo book by blurb.com. They accept PDF files for printing - which is important for me because most of the book making software of the printers doesn't work on Linux. Of course there is an Open Source program for making a PDF - Scribus. It is available for all OS, even OS/2. I'll tell you about my experience in one of the next episodes. There are a lot of photobooks to look at for inspiration at SOFOBOMO. Then I start to edit an image. The JPEG image is a bit overblown in the highlights and I have to go back to the RAW file. Cropping turns out to be difficult and the image needs a bit of a contrast boost in some parts. The final steps - sharpening and deciding about a vignette will be made when the layout of the book is clear. For sharpening one needs to kknow the output resolution and size - and I will have to scale the image to 300 DPI before putting it into the book. The vignette depends on the background of the page.
