It is an understatement to say that Adam Yauch changed all of our lives because he changed us so completely--through his music, his activism, and his friendship. Because his presence in our lives was so large, so shall be his absence. And also his legacy. I find myself now remembering above everything else his tireless work for nonviolence & Tibet, of course, but also his amazing sense of humor. Those of us who were fortunate enough to work with him have likely never worked so hard nor laughed so much as we did when we were in his presence. Yauch also changed what it meant to be an artist-activist. I admit that when I met him, I was skeptical of him and his interest in my work (I was a human rights activist studying & living with Tibetans in Nepal; he was the guy that sang "Fight For Your Right to Party"). But I quickly realized that he was an artist and an activist in the deepest sense of the words. Himself a spiritual seeker, Adam turned his musical genius into a force for social and political justice. It comes a day after the activist left the protection of the US Embassy to a Beijing hospital under an agreement reached between Chinese authorities and US officials. This dramatic turn of events comes after Chen was widely reported as wanting to stay inside China. He wanted to be reunited with his family, study law and continue to fight for freedom for his country. It's understood Chen had originally received assurances this would happen, following lengthy negotiations between the US and China. However, since leaving the US Embassy, and speaking with his wife and friends, Chen no longer believes this is possible. Chen found out that his wife was mistreated by Shandong authorities following his escape in April. He told western media on Thursday Chinese authorities have stopped US Embassy officials from meeting with him, and that the regime had gone back on its pledges. He now fears for his family's safety and has abandoned the wish to stay in China. NTD Senior China Analyst Wen Zhao says he believes the US was sincere in working to secure Chen's freedom, but more action is needed.
