Red Panda Rushes into Residential Home in Leshan, China
For more news and videos visit ➡ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ➡ http Add us on Facebook ➡ on.fb.me An unusual house guest in southwest China. An endangered red panda ventured in to one woman's home, getting an exceptionally warm welcome. A red panda recently entered a residential home in the suburbs of Leshan, a city located in southwest China's Sichuan Province. [Home Owner]: "We were having a meal outside our home and saw it climbing down the slope toward us. We approached it slowly, leaving the door of our house open, and then the red panda suddenly rushed inside." While it was in her home, the owner made a pile of firewood and grass to keep it comfortable. Neighbors wanted to get a look at the panda. But sometimes the shy animal would bark at approaching strangers or turn its back on those attempting to take photos. The red panda is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwest China. It mainly feeds on bamboo, and sometimes eats birds, insects and other small mammals. The red panda is an endangered species, with an estimated population of less than 10000. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified the red panda as "vulnerable," meaning it has become endangered due to habitat destruction. The trespassing panda has since been released back into the wild by local authorities. From: NTDTV Views: 141 12 ratings Time: 01:19 More in Pets & Animals

NATURE | Jungle Eagle | A Hungry Harpy | PBS
After three days of rain, a harpy mother is desperate to feed her hungry chick. Harpy eagles are the most powerful birds of prey in the world. Standing three feet tall, with a six-foot wingspan and razor-sharp talons the size of bear claws, these birds are the heavyweight hunters of the South American rainforest. They are the top predators in the jungle canopy, feeding regularly on tree-dwelling mammals like monkeys and sloths. But scientists know very little about harpy eagles because their numbers are few and their habitat is large. Hidden in the branches of the canopy, they are rarely seen, let alone filmed. NATURE enters the secret world of the harpy, and provides a treasure trove of new information about this majestic species. "Jungle Eagle" premieres on PBS Wednesday November 9, 2011 at 8pm and is part of the 30th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET.ORG for PBS. Nov. 7 - Chinese scientists claim to have cracked the secret behind the age-old question of why the woodpecker seems to be headache-proof. The bird gets its name from the way it feeds - violently hammering its beak into the bark of trees in order to extract insects buried inside. But the scientists believe it's methods have real-world application for people as well. Rob Muir reports. From: ReutersVideo Views: 17 1 ratings Time: 01:44 More in News & Politics

Illinois Adventure visits the Forest Park Nature Center. This rugged 540-acre park was acquired in the mid-1950s and later designated as a state nature preserve. The nature center's 7+ miles of hiking trails traverse bluff forestland, an open woodland interspersed with hill prairie openings holding uncommon prairie plant species such as bottlebrush grass, pussytoes and golden Alexander. Chipmunks, squirrels and White-tailed Deer are common inhabitants. Over 100 woodland bird species commonly use the park as migrants, winter visitors or year-round residents. The nature center's bird feeding/watering station is always busy with chickadees, titmice, Whitebreasted Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers, as well as warblers, vireos and other neotropical species, particularly during migrations. Please contact the nature center for a schedule of its tours and environmental education programs.

Emperor Penguin Ends up on Wrong Continent
For more news and videos visit ? english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ? http Add us on Facebook ? facebook.com It's a rare thing for a penquin from Antarctica to land in New Zealand. But that's exactly what happened to this young Emperor penguin who swam thousands of miles in the wrong direction. Looking forlorn and exhausted, this 10-month-old Emperor penguin is a really long way from home. Spotted on New Zealand's Peka Peka Beach, the bird attracted a lot interest from locals. [Unidentified Local Resident]: "I just want to rescue it, poor little thing." It's believed the penguin swam about 6000 kilometers or 4000 miles from Antarctica. And penguin expert Colin Miskelly says the bird may have strayed from its homeland in search of food. [Colin Miskelly, Penguin Expert, Te Papa Museum]: "This one would have been among this year's crop of chicks and usually they stay among the pack ice and feed on fish and squid and krill; but this one's just kept going north and it's a very long way from its usual range." It is the first Emperor penguin to turn up in New Zealand for 44 years. And experts say the young bird is likely to be hot and thirsty -- but would need to find its way back to Antarctica in order to survive in the wild. Looks like this chick has another marathon swim ahead. From: NTDTV Views: 2 8 ratings Time: 01:08 More in News & Politics
