China's Great Famine of 1958 to 1961 is officially referred to by the Communist regime as "Three years of Natural Disaster." Yet researchers generally believe the famine was caused by policies associated with the so-called "Great Leap Forward," whereby peasants were ordered to stop working in the fields and join in steel production.
