"The Posadas understand that being healthy is about more than just diet and exercise - it's about retraining your consciousness and your lifestyle so that healthful living becomes second-nature again." -- Kelly Traver, MD, Founder and CMO, MD Health Evolution "The stores are filled with fitness books but this one is different. The Posadas' perspective on healthy living, especially for kids, is very timely given the increased concern with the issue of childhood obesity. The Posadas provide practical and realistic advice in an entertaining style." -- Bob Costas, NBC and MLB Network Sportscaster "Just like baseball, Fit Home Team is exercise mixed with entertainment. The Posadas live it every day and I recommend their down-to-earth manual for healthy living to all families." --Mariano Rivera, Pitcher for the New York Yankees "It would have been easy for Jorge to write about being in charge of home for the Yankees. Instead he and Laura have given us a blue print for making our homes a better, healthier place. This is a great guide for parents, grandparents and children as to what we eat and drink, how we exercise, and how to be creative in finding fun things to do as a family. Written with the same passion that he plays with, Jorge and Laura Posada have given us a special book for the entire family." -- Billy Crystal "Childhood obesity is on the rise, and Fit Home Team is a big-league ally in our fight to curb this alarming trend." -- Michael R . Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York

Weekend Studio Session
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 18:29:38 04/19/09
Welcome one and all! Not only have I been hard at work at my unique job, I've been hard at work capturing it all on tape for your pleasure and enjoyment. The "On the Beat" video blog is now official. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy our entry into the social media space. We will have a new video 1-2 times per week, so be sure to subscribe so you receive alerts of these momentous occasions. A very special thanks to Stephen Black for editing my video meanderings into a coherent piece of art.
We spent the weekend at Frigo Recording in Boalsburg, PA working on some new material. You'll meet producer Trevor Gast, my brother Mark on guitar, Tyne on banjo, and Will Mills on fiddle. I also took a washboard off the wall of this Pennsylvania home studio and played it with thimbals! I learned this trick (the thimbal part) from the President of Penn State University, Graham Spanier , who guests in bluegrass bands around town. I went to Penn State and emailed him to learn the art of washboarding!
As challenging as the studio can be with multiple takes and tracking, this is really the end of the road when making music. Before we hit the studio, I've spent weeks or months on a song. First, I work on the concept for the song, the lyrics, and the instrument palette. Then I show the song to my dream team-- my A%R guy who specializes in chart-topping pop music and my educational consultant who specialized in age-appropriate content. These two people tend to give me the same notes but for different reasons. For example, Loren (song guy) might say, "The pre-chorus is too long" where Beth might say, "The pre-chorus doesn't make sense." While Loren is referring to the song structure and Beth is referring to the lyrics, this is a clear note to revamp this entire section of the song.
After both Loren and Beth sign off on the song demo, I show the song to my producer, Trevor Gast. I show him a piano or guitar demo with vocals and bang on a chair and beatbox the percussion to show him the feel of the song. Trevor begins composing the web of instrument parts through a keyboard, which allows him graph the parts and experiment with ideas. We work together to get the sounds we want. I begin searching for the musicians to play the parts we wrote and schedule the studio time.
We always start with drums to lay the song's foundation. Then we lay the core instruments like guitar and piano. When the musicians are working, I'm sitting next to Trevor in the Captain's chair, singing to the musicians through their headphones so they can easily follow the music. Lead vocals always take the longest. They have to be absolutely flawless, because a recording is permanent! Many inventive things continue to happen in the studio as we make new discoveries with the musicians we meet. Many times Trevor and I are not as well versed in the full capacity of an instrument until they arrive. And because we make music for kids, we get to ask them to do many silly things that they have been encouraged for years not to do (make the notes break, overplay, tune into a note, and harmonizing with a kazoo).
I feel very strongly that kids music should be held to the same standards as music for adults. I use real instruments and real kids as singers. Just because kids are young, this is not an invitation to make junk because they won't be able to hear the difference.
Thanks for watching!

What to Drink on St. Patrick's Day
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 16:23:40 07/06/09
On St. Patrick's Day 2009, I had the pleasure of performing a show 3 miles from my home in Queens, New York. Every little body toted a green paper hat. When Mark opened the show with "Do you know what today is?," the kids were proud to share their wear. Little did they know that it was also Jump with Jill day.
I based the song "Water" on one of my favorite Irish punk bands, Flogging Molly . They blend traditional Irish music with punk rock and it is seriously something to see (and hear!). I studied traditional Celtic music taking careful note of the song structure and the way the story was told. Drinking songs are really their own genre all together. Noting the themes of friends, falling over, and consuming large quantities of liquid, I began writing the song's lead riff. My song transformed from the ridiculous to the profound when I decided to play and record the lead riff on water glasses tuned to a D scale. Luckily my producer had the same sense of humor, and the patience, to sample each glass in the sound booth as we laughed our way through the recording process. Getting the right volume and tone for the recording was quite challenging, but in the end I only smashed one glass. We actually captured it in that take and it made the final cut on the record to end the song with a smash!
Using music to teach kids about nutrition is taken to an entirely new level with this song. The texture of the musical palette tells a story of the importance of water drinking. It is proof that I really am totally crazy, and that I was born to do this.

How to Be a Rockstar Nutritionist
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 22:27:59 07/06/09
I earned my undergraduate degree in nutrition and theater from Penn State University. I essentially crafted a nutrition communications major by studying metabolism by day and performing in shows and bands by night. My first employment was also from Penn State, as writer, producer and host of a PBS show called “What’s in the News.” It was here that I had an epiphany that I could combine my nutrition knowledge and skills on the stage to work into a job that didn’t really seem like a job at all.
I was invited to Penn State to speak to current students about my career as a Rockstar Nutritionist. This is my way to give back to the school that has given so much to me. I visited all the local landmarks, including the Cremery where they make delicious ice cream and the Diner where they make world famous grilled sticky buns. I can’t believe I graduated from Penn State without becoming morbidly obese!
My advice to current students was:
1. Contemplate the meaning of (your) life
What are you good at and what do you enjoy?
What problem does the world have?
Where do your skills meet that need?
2. Have a vision
Make a plan and do it!
Use what you know, learn what you don’t.
3. Be nice
Talent only goes so far…
4. Be persistent with class
Don’t be annoying; don't be a door mat, either.
5. Follow through with commitments
Be reliable.
6. Don’t be a square.
7. Manage yourself like a brand
You control the media you release about yourself (employers do look at your Facebook).
8. Deliver
Know your stuff.
I’ve been told that college is the best four years of your life. I like to think of it more as four exceptional years of training for what I was always meant to do. I’m so lucky to have crossed paths with mentors, teachers and friends who expected this of me. Now I get paid to do what I love. I work every day to make it the best year ever, and so far so good!

Deep Dish Rocker
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 19:18:51 07/06/09
My trip to Chicago was a total blast. Even though I’m surrounded by people almost every minute I’m awake, touring can be very isolating because I’m away from my friends and cats. My day at the office never really ends as we travel from hotel to hotel. But Chicago helped me recharge. I met my web designer, Steve, in person. Can you believe we live in such a techie world that I could work with someone for six months—emailing or speaking to him everyday, on weekends and late at night—and not even know what he looks like? He makes my website look great, doesn’t he?
Then Mark and I had deep dish pizza (my favorite kind) with my college roommate and one of my very best friends, all the way from high school, Kimi Evans. Kimi lived down the street from me growing up, so technically I’ve known her since I was in elementary school. How many friends do you get to keep for your entire life? Not only that, we sweat, bled, cried and laughed together as runners on the cross-country team. We remain running buddies to this day. Our running habit has endured through our many life changes over the years. While I have channeled my habit as part of my training regimen to be ready for a Jump with Jill show, Kimi has elevated the sport to philanthropic levels by running marathon’s in support of her mom’s heroism surviving several types of cancer. Life is like that. You can channel all the things that you love into something that can call attention, bring deeper meaning, and bring change to something you care very deeply about. It was so nice that the tour was passing through Chicago so I could see her life up close.
In this video, you’ll see and hear snippets of the song “Energy,” where I use the analogy of a car to explain the difference between healthy foods and not-so-healthy foods. There is quite a debate in the health education community about how to approach this topic. We don’t want to make dessert seem forbidden so it doesn’t backfire and become the center of attention. The idea of food being “good” or “bad” also doesn’t really allow for dessert to be included at all. I tend to go for the sometimes and all-the-time approach, using a car as my analogy. Healthy food gives your body a full tank, so we want to eat it all the time. It runs fast! A body running on lots of unhealthy food hardly has any gas at all, and it putters to a stop. In the show, I have the kids make the respective noises for the full and empty tanks. These sounds are repeated when we talk about the sugar in soda and cereal, as well as the impact of advertising. If you’d like to share how you explain this concept to kids, please comment below!

My trip to Wisconsin was delicious and enlightening.
We started the tour performing for the Oneida Nation tribal school. The school is built in a circle for the circle of life. They collect sap from the maple trees to make syrup. They have a school garden. They take a cultural dance class to learn about their heritage. They have their own language and recite poems honoring the earth and its creators at the beginning and end of each day.
They worship the earth, the water, the sun, and “the three sisters” representing squash, beans, and corn—in honor of sustainable agriculture: the corn grows tall, the beans sprouts support the corn from falling over, the squash is prickly to keep the raccoons from scavenging the fruits of their labor. Rather than mass cropping just one, the three sisters honor a way to feed the body and the earth. A religious ceremony is built around a change in the season or a harvest. As a professional foodie, I was head-over-heels intrigued.
I visited Ted Skenadore at Tsyunhehkwa Organic Farm (pronounced joon-hek-qwa, meaning “life sustenance”), a farm on the Oneida reservation. Ted was one of the most welcoming people I had ever met. We bonded immediately because he, too, is a musician. Check out The Strong Medicine Band ! He entertained all of my questions, and encouraged my exploration of his culture, everything from politics to religion to food.
Ted’s work at Tsyunhehkwa serves the Oneida people and the surrounding community with fresh fruits and vegetables (people can rent plots to grow their own, too), eggs, and meat. He showed me the process of corn production, from the growing, drying, cooking and canning, to the store where the finished products are retailed. Obesity and diabetes run rampant in the Oneida community. These issues are rooted in the feast and famine cycle; the human body is not designed to coexist with so much high calorie food. American Indians develop diabetes at one of highest rates of any race. Tsyunhehkwa provides access to the healthy cultural foods that can help the Oneida return to a more traditional diet. I hope that my message of rock ‘n roll nutrition could make a real difference to encourage the Oneida to use this amazing resource.
We also performed in Green Bay Public Schools and toured Lambeau Field. I bought a Brett Farve jersey at the Goodwill. After an extensive search found some Wisconsin cheese curds. All in all, it was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Music incites movement. Spend time with kids and you will get to experience this first hand. In this week’s video you will get to see a performance of “The Bone Rap,” featuring rapper Calcium and some amazing kids from a school in Brooklyn, New York. The school hosted a science night for teachers and parents, and I was the headlining event. The kids went crazy. I was in heaven. I can't believe this is my day job!
Because I’ve made a career of using music to teach, I learn all I can about the science behind it.
The idea of watching music and not moving is a new thing. You’ll never watch a tribesman from Africa telling the Discovery Channel camera that they “don’t sing” or they “don’t dance.” Everyone just does it. It’s part of their culture, their way of life, even the way their brains work.
Music is intimately related to movement, and when you look at a trained musicians brain, you can see actual structural changes when synchrony between different parts happens faster and in larger volumes. In short, the brain becomes trained to move to music. Music excites neurons. All this rapid fire can enhance learning. This is the same science that advertisers use to get you to remember a jingle. I’ve done it here with Calcium.
John Krakauer, a neuroscientist and co-director of the Motor Performance Laboratory at the Neurological Institute, says that music actually could have been part of the human neural selection process, much like the male peacock plumage. So take note of evolution’s protection of our drive to move when that beat comes on! Let those inhibitions go! Let those neurons fire! And let the learning, and the fun having, begin!

Tour Kickoff in Nashville

As we loaded in our equipment for our first show, students were in music class in the gym rehearsing their hawnky tawnk line dance for their spring concert. I thought this was pretty neat. After our show we visited the sites where we crossed paths with 3 Elvises, tried on cowboy hats, and were almost mowed over by Nashville security guards on Segways. We were actually being stopped because the cop wanted to know how Mark and I got our hair so spiky.
Day 2 was intense: an elementary school show in the morning and afternoon PLUS keynoting at the Tennessee Dietetic Annual conference in the evening. I was about ready to drop, so we went to the Cheesecake Factory for a little r & r & dessert... only to find that everyone from the dietetic conference was there, too! I walked in and an entire table of dietitians were screaming the riff to the water song I had serenaded them with just moments ago, startling me from my exhaustion. I do believe this outburst may have been caused by more than just drinking water. Mark (my brother/business partner/fellow rocker) was very impressed that dietitians ate at the Cheesecake Factory and finally gave his seal of approval for my choice of career.
We made FOX primetime news for all our efforts. I was waiting outside the school as Mark announced my grand entrance to a room full of excited kids when the news truck came barreling around the corner to catch us in action. They ran to me with their cameras and mics and I hit the stage with them in tow. Looking at the clip, I realize how hot is was in Nashville-- 67 degrees! Coming from subzero March tempatures in New York, it felt like the Bahamas. My makeup was running off my eyelids before the show even started!

Voyage from Nashille to Buffalo

After our adventure in Nashville, Tennessee, we trekked thirteen hours north to Olean, New York, just outside Buffalo. Living on the road presents many interesting food conundrums. Let’s just say truck stops are not known for their local produce. Mark loves the Golden Corral and will beg for hours after seeing a road side sign, using every “don’t you love me” trick in the book until I finally “allow.”
