Girl Model - SXSW 2012 Accepted Film
Despite a lack of obvious similarities between Siberia and Tokyo, a thriving model industry connects these distant regions. GIRL MODEL follows two protagonists involved in this industry: Ashley, a deeply ambivalent model scout who scours the Siberian countryside looking for fresh faces to send to the Japanese market, and one of her discoveries, Nadya, a thirteen year-old plucked from the Siberian countryside and dropped into the center of Tokyo with promises of a profitable career. After Ashley's initial discovery of Nadya, the two rarely meet again, but their stories are inextricably bound. From: sxsw Views: 87 3 ratings Time: 01:29 More in Entertainment

Zenzile - "Simple Lesson": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
After a thirteen years old career, including: seven albums, five Maxi LP's and hundreds of live concerts throughout the world, you would think you knew all about ZENZILE. However, those who have followed this band since their beginnings in Angers, France, know well that: No one knows what will resemble a new album of Zenzile before it gets out. Instead of cloning their music precisely year after year, the quintet has always chosen to focus on their trade mark sound which is rich and various, thanks to a dazzling bass and whooping guitars. From the start, Zenzile is having fun mixing the same influences (post punk, Dub, folk, soft rock, soul jazz) with a savvy sense of measuring them all out, in order to produce a unique album every time. For Pawn Shop, the Angevins (from Angers) have deliberately let their POP spirit opened up, in a humble and formal way of course. Only two tracks are exclusively instrumental and are welcome signs of a previous life. All eight other tracks are carried by the voices of old partners: Jamika Ajalon et David K. Alderman (Warehouse), demonstrating some new and unexpected sides of their talent. This eighth studio album is less angular and more confident than the previous Living in Monochrome in which the band had let the guitar lead out. Today Zenzile seems to have found the right balance between staying simple while being demanding. Strings and organs are more present than ever to form melodies never dared before. Evidently freed from any past ... From: sxsw Views: 2 0 ratings Time: 03:46 More in Music

Thursday Thirteen V48
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 11:44:27 12/18/10
I've been spending the last day or so doing more clearance from the garage. I can see the floor again now. There's a few observations about some of the stuff.
1) There's been some furniture there which we have been unsuccessful to even give away. That's not to say that we didn't successfully donate a few items including a bed, two wardrobes, two tables, a set of four chairs and some other bits and pieces. It even included a disassembled kit which someone wanted to rebuild.
2) The miscellaneous hand basins and similar have all gone. They were not re-usable in any case.
3) A few tools looked to be over ambitious and have resided as 'investments' rather than practical items. They have now quietly disappeared (OK except the electric plane and the dangerous flame blasting paint stripper)
4) Records and increasingly books are going digital. The vinyls are still hanging in there because of the artwork of some of the covers. Probably 75% of them are now available digitally. My most tricky acquisition was Retribution by Clark Hutchinson. There's a CD copy around but it's just not as clean as the original album. The cassette tapes I found are now all goners.
5) I realise that the various anthology books I've acquired at different times are not all that sensible. They are too big to read. My Kafka, Huxley, Orwell and Lawrence mega books have not been read although the individual stories have as separate paperbacks.
6) Despite the plaintive cries from the book publishers, I can't help thinking that more book reading will go digital over the next few years. My own recent experience of this has been much better than I expected.
7) After spending some time in L.A., where I had access to a vinyl record player, I'm sorely tempted to restore one of the decks I've found and have a small filtered selection of about 10 vinyls for casual playing.
8) I can't believe how much spare cabling of many types I unearthed. It was mainly for PS/2 style connections of keyboards, parallel printer cables and serial connections. None of these connections even exist on modern technology so they are really defunct now.
9) I have a large pile of Hard drive disks varying from 100GB upwards. Most have shown signs of unreliability, so I can't really use them, but I also can't dispose of them because of what they may contain. I shall have to look further into this. I realise my minimum unit of non laptop disk is now 1Terabyte, which only a few years ago would seem somewhat excessive.
10) I think I have spotted several species of spider during the clearance work. I saw plenty of pholcus phalangioides (they are the clear coloured spindly ones) a few segestria senoculata (they live in the holes that have been drilled in the brickwork) some pardosa amentata (they are the wolfy ones that run about without webs) and some enormous tegenaria duellica (they are the big spring suspension spiders that suddenly appear on walls at night). I expect there are a few more as sometimes I felt like I was in that scene from Indiana Jones. There's at least one of each type in the picture below.
11) There were a few previously packed crates that now Have No Meaning or Logic. I was able to dispose of them without really examining the contents.
12) I have decided that keeping boxes from purchases is not very sensible unless one wishes them to eventually be placed in a museum. As an example, the 25 inch Black Trinitron box from another era had just been filled with old broken watering cans and small segments of hose pipe. Apart from a rodent nest made from old chewed bus tickets in one corner, it didn't seem to have served any useful purpose.
13) An important stage has now been passed in the clearance project. The floor is now visible in a circle and its possible to Walk Around and Look Across the space. Testing it on others though is less convincing. They still look bemused at the amount of stuff and mutter things along the lines of "you should have shown me what it was like before."
There. Thirteen. It must be Thursday.

"How Art & Music Can Change The World" Feb 2009
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 17:56:44 02/03/09
http://howartandmusiccanchangetheworld.blogspot.com"How Art & Music Can Change the World" -- a lecture, art exhibit and performance event in university classrooms and bookstores. Jean Smith and David Lester of the underground literary rock duo Mecca Normal intend to inspire audiences towards considering political content in their creative self-expression.How Art & Music Can Change the World: rough outline (60 minutes)Abstract guitar begins. Jean enters from the back and walks through the room vocalizing wordlessly without a microphone, approaching audience members to demonstrate the power of unamplified sound and her intention to engage with individuals. The piece ends and Jean says that the song was named one of the "top ten protest songs" of that year by Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail -- she reminds the audience that the song had no words.5 minute mark:Jean and David introduce themselves, and their work, by briefly explaining their motivation to form a band that was different from the four-guys-on-stage bands that dominated the Vancouver scene in the 1980s. "In our early years I spoke from the stage," says Jean. "Between fairly literal songs about feminism, poverty, and housing issues, to encourage women to start bands with other women, as opposed to being audience members. The social movement known as Riot Grrrl began and its founding members cited Mecca Normal as an inspiration to its inception. We connected with audiences who were encouraged to, in this case, focus on feminist concerns using music and culture. This direct linearity of events inspired us to address the idea that it is not possible to change the world. We did change the world."15 minute mark:David talks about how the way the band operates as a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) entity is as significant as what we say in the lyrics. "There is a tactile intensity, a tension between Jean and I. We are very different people and we have different skills. We each work from our strengths in booking tours and finding ways to connect with both like-minded people and those who would never find us on their own."Jean talks about the motivation to maintain a creative partnership for twenty-five years -- "It is exciting to us that we inspire artists in their work. This, to us, is a more significant exchange than generating profit or fame and status in commercial terms." PowerPoint:David talks about his ongoing poster series called Inspired Agitators which highlights the accomplishments of artists and activists engaged in social and aesthetic change. Jean asks David how he became aware of obscure artists and filmmakers in the 1960s and David talks briefly about his older brother's involvement in radical politics -- the counter-culture -- at that time.25 minute mark:Jean and David outline different ways to present political ideas within song structures and Mecca Normal performs two songs.35 minute mark:David talks about his graphic novel The Listener and using slides to show how a key scene is constructed in this book about memory, art and politics. Jean, the daughter of two abstract painters (her father was also an art director at an ad agency in the 1960s), talks about the self-portrait series she began at age thirteen and has continued adding to for over thirty-five years to create a body of work documenting how women and girls view themselves. Jean and David wrap up the PowerPoint art exhibit by talking about the aims of both literal and abstract political art -- in terms of intention and ability to inspire viable progressive social change.45 minute mark:Jean talks about how her work has evolved over years of presenting it to live audiences and seeing their response. This opportunity has provided her with a basis of respecting an audience's ability to interpret art and music on their terms. The event ends with the performance of several engaging narrative pieces that employ humor with a resonating subtext of interpersonal dynamics.
