Corning, N.Y. - The holiday season is a time spent with family and friends. But some soldiers serving overseas will not have that luxury. Corning area students and the American Red Cross are organizing care packages to give to soldiers overseas. The packages are filled with candy, DVD's, soup, socks, books, cookies and personal thank you cards. The items will be mailed to men and women who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. "They will go into the mail usually the first week in December and it doesn't usually take more than two weeks for the soldiers to get it," stated Debby Woglom of the American Red Cross. The idea to give packages during the holiday season was started by Corning East High School students six years ago. The American Red Cross buys items for the packages based off letters they receive from soldiers describing items they miss from home. Students and children had a lot of fun helping out. "Some classes made cards and just came out to help...it feels good to help," stated student Autumn Reed. "It's fun to pick things out,” said student Will Clearly. Newly elected Congressman Tom Reed came to help out. Just last week, Reed was in the hospital after suffering a pulmonary embolism. Reed told WETM 18 News that giving the troops care packages is just one way to bring joy to their holiday so far away from their homes. “The troops are away from home, it's the holiday time and it's just a little something we can do to show them that we care,” stated U.S. Congressman Tom Reed. The American Red Cross received more three-thousand dollars so far to buy the goods for the troops to enjoy. Officials stated that there goal is to mail out fifty care packages. Fifty percent of concussions are never reported. That scary statistic has the sports world concerned. Tonight we talk to some local players and coaches about their stories. And find out what's being done state wide to make headway on the fight against concussions. "(TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) Jocelyne Lamoureuz plays with her heart and her head in the game. But for six weeks, she was off the ice with headaches. (JOCELYNE LAMOUREUX/ UND HOCKEY PLAYER) I didn't have my mouth guard in I just remember my jaw clenching shut as hard as I could and my face went right into her shoulder, so I didn't get knocked over or anything but I could definlety feel my brains were spilling out of my ears, a couple minutes after. (TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) Stories and experiences like hers have become far too common. (CHAY GENOWAY/ UND HOCKEY PLAYER) It's hard to put into words I guess, not knowing if you'll ever play again, it's scary. You go month by month, you head is still idle, and you're still getting the headaches and still having a tough time reading the computer or watching TV, you definelty stay up. (TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) Century quarterback Carson Wentz took a hit this season that left him sidelined for a week. All he remembers is dropping back in the pocket, but the big hit, and the six points he added to the scoreboard several plays later are all a blur... (CARSON WENTZ/ CENTURY QUARTERBACK) Someone said I scored, and I've seen the highlights and I still do not to this day remember doing that it's just all a blur looking back it's just a scary incident I guess (TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) But there's plenty being done to try and lower the frequency of concussions. The North Dakota High School Activities Association has passed new guidelines for 2010-2011. An athlete suspected of having a concussion MUST be checked and cleared by medical personnel before returning to competition. (MIKE PELUSO/ BHS HOCKEY COACH-FORMER PRO PLAYER) we'll wait untill the doctor clears them to come back and play, I don't take them lightly from a playing stand point having them I know how you feel and it's something that's really kind of frusterating a lot of young athletes aren't sure how to react to them as well. (TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) With athletes often worried about playing time, concussions aren't always reported, which can cause headaches for the coaches. (KELLY MCCLEARY/ N-G-S HEAD FOOTBALL COACH) I may not know untill after the game is over that that kid even was banged up if he doesn't say anything or stays on the field. I can't see it, it's tough on a coach and tough on a player also ( TIA STREETER/ KX NEWS) Coaches say they hope tighter guidelines will better protect athletes from the pee wee's to the pro's. For KX News, I'm Tia Streeter." The NFL and NHL have also changed their rules regarding hits to the head. Tomorrow night, we look at tests for diagnosing concussions, which pro teams have been using for years, and have recently started being done locally.
