Its organizers, the Worldwide Trade and Consumer Protection Foundation, is trying to raise awareness of the risks and repercussions of counterfeiting. The Worldwide Trade and Consumer Protection Foundation held a conference in Rome last week highlighting the growing problem of counterfeit products. [Countess Marisa Pinto Olori del Poggio, Executive VP of WTCP]: "This phenomenon is so dramatic that it hurts economic development and the health of citizens, and harms the state by lost tax revenue." And this growing problem isn't just about economics. Because counterfeiters don't observe health and safety standards, counterfeit products can also pose serious health risks. [Antonio Tajani, Vice-President, EU Commission on Industry and Entrepreneurship]: "According to the Chamber of Commerce, counterfeit goods for 600 billion dollars are in circulation in the world today and it's estimated this figure will double in 2015. Counterfeiting also means poor quality and dangerous products. In this regard, think of the tons of counterfeit toys that might fall into the hands of children." The conference also focused on developing tools to combat counterfeiting, like improved product traceability and identification. [Franco Staino , Vice-President WTCP]: "We should know more about what's behind all ... From: NTDTV Views: 75 5 ratings Time: 01:49 More in News & Politics

The challenge of economic reform in Italy
www.euronews.net Reviving a flagging economy should be the top priority for the new Italian government, according to one Rome business owner. Loredana Pompei has run the Caffe Brasile in the Italian capital for twelve years. She says if Mario Monti forms a government, he must ease the tax burden on small companies so they can grow. Pompei told euronews that she would like employee contributions to be reduced so she can hire more staff. From: Euronews Views: 75 0 ratings Time: 01:26 More in News & Politics

Social Security: "By The Numbers"
With Social Security on a steep descent to $6.5 trillion in unfunded obligations during the next 75 years, Senator Hutchison's Defend and Save Social Security Act would secure the future of the program without raising taxes or cutting core benefits. Under current law, retirees' monthly benefits would be cut nearly one-fourth, beginning in 2036. Hutchison's plan would ensure Social Security's solvency by gradually increasing the retirement age (over 16 years) to 69 and instituting a modest one percent reduction in the annual cost-of-living adjustment. Hutchison's plan involves common-sense, gradual reform that strengthens Social Security for current and future retirees. Senator Menendez on Repeal of Oil Tax Subsidies vote
US Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released the following statement after the cloture vote to proceed to consideration of the "Close Big Oil Tax Loopholes Act," which garnered a majority vote in the Senate (52-48). Unfortunately, it did not garner the 60 votes needed to overcome the Republican filibuster. Only 2 Republican Senators voted in support of considering the legislation. "A bipartisan majority of the Senate has spoken. If we are going to reach a deal on raising the debt ceiling, cutting wasteful oil subsidies needs to be on the table. We cannot reduce the deficits on the backs of working class Americans alone. Even the most wealthy and powerful among us must pay their fair share." Sheldon Fights to Include Extension of Renewable Energy Incentives in Tax Proposal
In this speech on the Senate floor, Senator Whitehouse urged the extension of a renewable energy tax credit grant program as part of a final compromise bill on Bush-era tax cuts. The grant program, which was first established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is set to expire at the end of this year. The program allows renewable energy projects to receive a direct cash grant instead of a tax credit. It has assisted a number of Rhode Island clean energy projects and promises to support many more worthwhile, job-creating initiatives. Video: Democrats Respond
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 13:16:00 12/08/10
Money for Fargo's flood control project and a water treatment plant in Williston are part of Gov. Jack Dalrymple's spending recommendations to the North Dakota Legislature. Fargo officials have been debating the scope of a project to protect the city from Red River flooding. Dalrymple says it could cost $1.5 billion, and the state share would be about $300 million over 10 years. His two-year budget plan includes $75 million in initial money for the project. Dalrymple also advocates spending $25 million in state funds to improve Williston's water supply system. He says it will help serve the growth in northwestern North Dakota's oil-producing region, and meet water demands from the oil industry. North Dakota Democratic lawmakers say they like the proposed budget that Governor Dalrymple outlined today. They say many of his funding priorities are in areas they've been talking about for years. Overall they favor the budget but say there are some points of contention. Democrats would like to see even more tax breaks for home owners and less in income tax cuts. They'd also like to grant tax relief by reducing the state sales tax or a sales tax holiday. Democrats also say there are things that weren't even mentioned... (Sen. Mac Schneider / (D) Grand Forks) "One thing that really stood out to me is that there's no increase in the SCHIP for healthcare, which would increase accessiblity for healthcare for our kids. Another thing that's not in there which is a key priority is funding for pre-k. A majority of states in this state do provide funding for pre-k education. Not in budget and is an area we'll have to work on in the next legislative session." Legislators will spend the time between now and the beginning of the session to review Governor Dalrymple's budget requests. The 2011 Legislative session starts January 4th.

Stop Wasting Money on Roger Clemens

Welcome to Ride The Pine...
Lets talk Sports!
Roger Clemens made his first appearance in a U.S District Court, pleading not guilty to charges of lying to congress about using steroids and human growth hormone. I can’t believe that our tax money is paying for this case that may not kick off till the end of next year. If he’s found guilty, which he won’t be (more on that later), who cares. So he lied to a bunch of liars about cheating in a game. Should it keep him out of the Hall of Fame, sure. Are there better things that our government could be doing right now, absolutely.
But I want you to decide, head over to RideThePine.com and vote on whether our government should be spending our money and their time on this trial. Your choices; Yes or Now...pretty simple.
Why I think he will be found not guilty, because Clemens said that he didn’t take steroids or HGH. Those are specific things and I bet there will be a lot of debate on the exact meaning of a performance enhancing drug.
The creative team at ESPN should be embarrassed, The Herbies . Thats the name you give to Kirk Herbstreit’s preseason award show. Herbies, Herpies, see what I’m saying. How about The Kirk’s or The Streit’s or The Frosted Tips.
Manny Ramirez is heading to the Chicago White Soxs , in the second baseball deadline, I don't understand it either. This is the time when teams just give up their overpaid, aging players for nothing. Its so weird that after Manny got busted for steroids, he just hasn’t been the same player. I wonder why that is?
Here’s a couple of things to check out while you are on the pine...
* The tennis US Open is under way.
* Donovan McNabb may miss the first game of the season with the Washington Redskins suffering from an ankle injury.
* There should be a lot of juicy details coming from the owners of the Los Angles Dodger’s divorce trial.
That is my view from the pine...

Higher prices, more taxes increase premiums - What to expect from HC bills
In a speech on the Senate floor on Oct. 27, US Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) highlighted 10 provisions in the Senate Democrats health care bills that would drive up health care costs for American families. This health plan being forced on Americans under phony tight deadlines bites off too much, fails to deliver on promises and passes the costs onto hardworking Americans, Enzi said. The combination of increased taxes, expensive mandates and new regulations in these bills will actually increase the cost of health care for most Americans. We need to enact reforms that will actually reduce costs and make health insurance more affordable. That is what the American people want, but unfortunately, that is not what the current bills actually do. From: SenatorEnzi Views: 75 1 ratings Time: 04:31 More in News & Politics
