British university students Paul Archer, Johno Ellison and Leigh Purnell reached the highest ever altitude by taxi%mdash17143 feet at Everest Base camp and they clocked up the longest journey by taxi at 43321 miles%mdashthe equivalent of an 80000 pound (US$129000) fare. Luckily they were off the meter in the 20-year-old black London cab named "Hannah", which they shipped from the first leg of the trip in Sydney, February 2011, to San Francisco%mdashdriving from the west to the east coast, through parts of Mexico, Israel, Eastern Europe, Spain, France and finally home to England on May 11. The FAO fears prices will rise even further in the near term and it is forecasting world wheat output will fall this year. Part of the increase is from higher oil prices linked to fertiliser production as well as costs related to food distribution and farm machinery use. Food prices had receded since hitting record highs in February last year when they helped stoke protests linked to the Arab Spring wave of civil unrest in some north African and middle eastern countries. However Nick Higgins, commodity analyst at Rabobank International explained: "We really saw the (food index) declines in Q4 2011 as being anomalous and related more to sell offs from the threats posed by the European macroeconomic situation rather than agricultural fundamentals." The FAO's senior economist and grain analyst Abdolreza Abbassian said prices could fall in the second half of this year with new crops easing market tension and driving full-year average prices below the record levels of 2011. The former deputy minister of commerce of China, Wei Jianguo, said that China may face an increasing deficit this year. China's inflation rate has hit a 20-month low of 3.2 percent in February. The figure was down from 4.5 percent on the previous month. It beats the inflation target for 2012 of 4 percent that Wen Jiabao announced on Monday. Inflation went down along with a decrease in the recent high food prices in China%mdasha relief from the sky-high inflation in 2011. Inflation in China peaked at 6.5 percent last July. Asianomics Jim Walker told Reuters, this is part of an economic slow down in China. Walker stated, "Our view is that China is in the middle of a hard landing. Its property sector is in deep trouble, its capital goods industry needs to be reduced in capacity terms, and there's no consumption that can really pick up the steam." The lower inflation figure may give authorities room to stimulate the economy with policies such as cutting bank reserve requirements to free up more money for loans. The figure for February, however, may have been somewhat distorted as many retailers discount products after the Chinese New Year in January. So inflation may rise again in March.
