Daily People%rsquos Campaign Marches, Rallies To Observe Anniversary Of Epic Montgomery Bus Boycott !
On Tuesday, December 6th, on day 163 of the Daily People%rsquos Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Equality and Justice, the People%rsquos Organization for Progress is proud to announce that many of the 122 organizations now endorsing the Daily Campaign will come together for a march, rally and teach-in to observe the 56th anniversary of the launching of the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott, its inspirational model.
Participants assembled at the Lincoln Monument, located on Springfield Av. and West Market Street at 4:30pm and marched downtown Newark. At 6pm , participants hosted a teach in and rally at Essex County College in the J. Harry Smith lecture hall.
The Daily People%rsquos Campaign was launched on June 27th to dramatize the impact of draconian public policies on ordinary people. POP vows to host this daily action everyday for 381 days in honor of the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott that propelled a young Martin Luther King Jr. onto national consciousness! A %lsquonational jobs program%rsquo is at the top of the list of the core issues driving the Campaign.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott was launched on Dec 5, 1955 against the very humiliating racially segregated busing in Alabama in the aftermath of the dramatic arrest of civil rights pioneer and legend Rosa Parks. The Boycott, enduring police and Klan terror, lasted 381 days when it led to a federal court order ending that segregated busing.
Monday through Friday, the Daily People%rsquos Campaign takes place from 4:30-6pm at the Lincoln Monument, Springfield Av. and West Market St. On Saturdays, the Daily Campaign takes place on Broad and Market
Streets, downtown Newark from 12 noon to 2pm. On Sundays, the Daily Campaign returns to the Lincoln Monument from 2-3pm .
The People%rsquos Organization for Progress meets every Thursday at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 224 West Kinney Street, Newark at 6:30pm .
