Mirel Wagner - "No Death": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
The great Townes Van Zandt once said there are two kinds of music: "The blues and zip-a-dee-doo-dah." According to this, Mirel Wagner's self-titled debut falls solidly into the blues category. "Songwriting can hardly be more minimalistic, no-frills, more strict as Mirel Wagner's sparse music," according to German magazine Spex; we agree. Mirel Wagner was born in Ethiopia, and grew up in peaceful conditions in Espoo, the second-largest city in Finland. At age 7 she was given violin lessons, at 13 she switched to guitar and at 16 she wrote her first songs ("To The Bone", the opening song from her album, is one of those early tunes). Jean Ramsay, an American music journalist living in Finland, came across Mirel at an open mic session in Helsinki. He was particularly convinced of her talent, raved about her in an early article and recommended her to others. So, without producing a demo or contacting any record labels, Mirel found herself sitting in a real recording studio. Over two days she recorded 12 songs straight. Nine of them can be found on her debut, which was first released in Finland through the indie label Kioski Recs and mainland Europe through Bone Voyage, and is now seeing a wider release across North America through Friendly Fire Recordings. Whether in Finland, France or Germany, journalists who have listened closely are full of praise for this unique young talent who has appeared, seemingly out of the blue, with her otherworldly gloomy folk. David Simpson was contacted by MAKE to create a spying device for MAKE Volume 16, so he came up with the Bug-In-A-Book project, a hacked together wireless listening device embedded in a hollowed out book. As Simpson explains at Maker Faire Bay Area 2011, a project using scavenged technology has flowered into a product with a kit that DIY folks can build and experience for themselves.

New Releases For September 13, 2011 - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 8 VIEWS | ADDED 03:32:53 09/13/11
In this week's new releases we have some guys on skates, some brutal fighters, and a little something extra.
SHOW NOTES: GAME #1:
First up is NHL 12. In this year’s edition of the popular hockey franchise, EA puts players on the ice with the goal of becoming the next legend of the ice...is that a thing? legend of the ice?
A full contact physics engine will have helmets flying and glass breaking as you fight to score. The game also features a “Be a GM” mode that lets you take your favorite team and guide them to victory. And as always, the game a a multitude of local and online multiplayer to give hockey fans hours of fun.
So strap on your gear, hit the ice, and skate your way to the top. but not really, like just in the game. like you'll be strapping on the gear in the game. i mean you could go play hockey yourself too and attempt to be a legend of the ice .. but i think it would be a lot harder.
and by alot harder i mean might as well just play the game.
GAME #2:
Next up is Supremacy MMA, which brings players a different take on the bone crunching world of MMA fighting. Go head to head with some of the top fighters in MMA, including the first female fighters ever featured in a video game.
Go beyond the octagon, and prove your skills in underground fight club locations such as strip clubs, prisons and abandoned warehouses. fighting in strip clubs and prisons? they found my favorite locations to fight in!
Now this game is quite different from the UFC games that have come out BUT if you want to go OUTSIDE the ring, break some bones, and essentially go backwards from how the sport of MMA has evolved .. Supremacy is your best bet.
hey some people just wanna break some bones.
GAME #3:
And lastly today we have a double shot of awesome. On the most recent episode of our discussion show, we had on the co-founder and CEO of Gaijin games, and as luck would have it, they have two new collections for home, and on the go.
Bit.Trip Saga 3DS and Bit.Trip Complete for Wii bring together all six of the BIT.Trip games in one place. The 3DS version has given the games stunning 3D visuals, as well as new power-ups and things to avoid. The Wii version has 120 new difficulty challenges and levels. You’ll also be able to listen to chill new remixes and demos of all of the music in the game.
So if you have had any experience with the BIT.TRIP series, and would like to get it all in one place, then the only question for you is: Play at home, or on the go.
Cause they have...y’know...both options covered.
That will do it for your daily dose of Press Pause. Be sure to check out our live discussion show today over at twitch.tv/presspause at 12 pm pacific. You can also find fully edited episodes over at our Youtube channel: youtube.com/presspausemevio .

Video: Corrina Gould, Karkin/Chochenyo Ohlone
[LESS INFO] 29 VIEWS | ADDED 17:17:34 07/18/11
Corrina Gould, Chochenyo/Karkin Ohlone Good evening. [speaks in Ohlone] In Chochenyo, my ancestors' language, I said good evening, my name is Corrina. I'm Chochenyo and I'm also Karkin Ohlone. And I come here today to talk to you about why it is important for the City Council here in Vallejo to consider the easement at Glen Cove or Sogorea Te in its entirety of 15 acres. There's a quote that I came across while I was sitting here listening, and you guys have a really long meeting. And it says, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." And that was Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King that said that. And its true. And today I stand before you because I really believe in protecting this site. Over 12 years ago, we became involved in protecting this site that is one of our ancestral burial grounds. And it has become more than just an Indian issue. It's an issue for the City of Vallejo, it's an issue for human beings. And the reason I say that I want you guys to think about the easement in the entirety of 15 acres is that while we've been doing research here, we have found that there were actually five shellmounds that were in the Glen Cove area. In 1976 when there was a report that was created before any of the homes were built there, there were actually five shellmounds that were there. Four of them were in-tact. And so, when the building was actually done in the Glen Cove area, four of those shellmounds were desecrated, or they were disturbed, or they were destroyed. The shellmound at Glen Cove is one of 425 that used to ring the Bay Area. And in the last 100 years, all of those shellmounds have been covered over or destroyed. We have been coming to the City of Vallejo and the Greater Vallejo Recreation District asking for three things to happen, or not to happen, on that land. We don't want a bathroom, we don't want a parking lot, and we don't want the hill graded. The whole entire site is a place that used to be a village site for our ancestors. Places where freshwater creeks run through, places where we could fish. And people still fish there. Amazingly, when I've been out there on the land in the last 90 days we've seen fishermen coming up with sturgeon that are as tall as me. People from all over, all over Northern California have come to visit that site. And continue to use it as its been used for the last 4,000 years. I ask that you consider signing the easement and the MOU [Memorandum of Understanding] with the Federally Recognized tribes that you are in conference with now, and that all of that land is protected. All we've been asking for, for the last 10 years is that there's no bathrooms put on our cemeteries, there's not a parking lot built. And as we've been out there for the last 90 days in a prayerful vigil, we know that we've had over 300 people there and there's no need for [additional] parking. We also know that if you grade that hill, there will be disturbance of more ancestral remains. And we have been in contact with archeology firms that are willing to take that site and look at it in a different way. We're also working with canine forensics that are willing to go in there and begin to do some research on how to find the human remains that are left there. There were many cremations that were done in this area. And because that land thats on that hillside that GVRD wants to grade has already been disturbed, there needs to be consideration that those cremations and burials are not in places where you can do auguring and you'll be able to find stuff. We're asking that those 15 acres be left in-tact as much as possible. That there's no bathrooms, there's no grading, and theres no parking lots. [Mayor Osby Davis: Alright, thank you.] mmm.
