The Internet Archive's Brewster Kahle: Universal Access to All Knowledge
[LESS INFO] 43 VIEWS | ADDED 19:56:20 01/06/12
This program was recorded in collaboration with the Long Now Foundation, on November 30, 2011.
As founder and librarian of the storied Internet Archive (deemed impossible by all when he started it in 1996), Brewster Kahle has practical experience behind his universalist vision of access to every bit of knowledge ever created, for all time, ever improving.
He will speak to questions such as these:
Can we make a distributed web of books that supports vending and lending? How can our machines learn by reading these materials? Can we reconfigure the information to make interactive question answering machines? Can we learn from past human translations of documents to seed an automatic version? And, can we learn how to do optical character recognition by having billions of correct examples? What compensation systems will best serve creators and networked users? How do we preserve petabytes of changing data?
Brewster Kahle, a computer engineer, internet entrepreneur, and digital librarian, founded the Internet Archive in 1996. He is focused on providing universal access to all knowledge, and developing technologies for information discovery and digital libraries. He was co-founder of Alexa Internet, which helped catalog the Web, which was later sold to Amazon.com.

Cisco's Digital Media Suite for Manufacturing
One of the demonstrations we showed at Automation Fair this week is the Cisco Digital Media Suite for Manufacturing. Cisco Digital Media Suite extends digital media to new applications for real-time and on-demand communications with flexible digital media creation, management, and publishing of content in various formats to multiple devices. Cisco's Digital Media Suite in a plant can be used to keep non-desktop personnel informed of plant performance, operations, events and outages. In a noisy production environment, it is ideal for use as a safety application informing personnel of situations and giving them timely information and guidance. In addition, DMS can serve as a means to distribute executive communications, training and any other video-based information quickly and broadly. www.cisco.com From: Cisco Views: 105 2 ratings Time: 02:06 More in Science & Technology

It's is a car lovers dream with everything from concept cars to super-cars, as well as the latest in robot technology presented by Honda. Asimo, one of the world's most advanced humanoid robots, entertains the crowd at the 2011 Dubai Motor show this week. The humanoid robot developed by Honda, made its debut last Sunday at the Dubai Motor Show. [Jean-luc de Krahe, Events & Communication, Asimo Studio]: "The reason for Asimo to be here actually is that Honda is a mobility company." Asimo, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, was introduced to the world in 2000. But Honda has been developing a humanoid robot since 1986. The latest version of Asimo can recognize faces and voices, climb up and down stairs, handle difficult terrain, run and even dance. Asimo has autonomous artificial intelligence so it could potentially manoeuvre itself through crowds of people without remote control or stopping each time to check on its programming. Honda hopes the research and development robot will, in the near future, be introduced into society to serve humans. [Jean-luc de Krahe, Events & Communication, Asimo Studio]: "Asimo has been developed to help people, I mean in the ageing society as we encounter at the moment, we will need machine to help us in the future." The Wind River Network Acceleration Platform is Good to Go!
At this year's IDF, Eric Mantion (Twitter.com was able to catch up with Steve Konish, from Wind River, to take about their new Network Acceleration Platform (j.mp The intention is, through this software product (deliverable on a USB drive as shown in the video), an otherwise normal Intel%reg Xeon%reg processor-based system can suddenly become a packet-handling powerhouse! This is key to the success of Communications Infrastructure Equipment (CIE) makers because, as shown in this picture: www.windriver.com So, that means, as the growth of the bandwidth needed out paces the revenues earned per user on average, CIE manufacturers need to develop a more cost-effective way to make they products that no longer require very hard to design and costly to produce ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits). While ASICs had been used for years to get a very specific result, their costs, development cycles, and inflexibilities are become a liability to many already strained service providers. The need to develop systems quicker, easier, and more cheaply will not only help everyone up and down the supply chain, but will also have the added bonus that a single hardware configurations can now potentially serve many different functions in the network, depending on the software that is loaded onto that intelligent system. Let us know what you think of this technology by leaving comments below! Do you like the idea of the networks upon which you rely become more efficient & flexible? What ... How to Navigate Medicare Reimbursement
The US population is aging, which means more physicians will be treating Medicare and Medicaid patients in the years to come. The Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services is mandating that physicians implement Electronic Medical Records to serve these patients more effectively and efficiently, and is offering reimbursements in the thousands for investment in technology. But the money is only available if doctors meet certain meaningful use requirements. We spoke recently with Dr. Michael Stearns, president and CEO of E-MDs, an EMR and practice management software company, for tips on meeting Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement guidelines and to find out what financial penalties could be imposed on doctors for not adopting healthcare technology. Here's what he had to say: Find out more about healthcare information technology, read additional blogs and watch helpful videos on the Intel Healthcare IT community: premierit.intel.com From: channelintel Views: 94 1 ratings Time: 02:59 More in Science & Technology
