Lowrider - "Hold On": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Adelaide's iconic Lowrider are a testament to the fact that the most integral part of being a successful band is making good music. With no gimmicks, special effects or record label backing, this foursome managed to build a reputation as one of the country's most incredible bands without so much as an EP to their name. Two lauded albums and hundreds of live shows later, Lowrider are undoubtedly one of the most critically acclaimed acts to emerge from Australia over the past decade. With impossibly smooth, effortless vocals juxtaposed with an honest, gritty ensemble of beats, bass and keys, Lowrider create an immaculate fusion of soul, funk and contemporary pop music which truly transcends time. Lowrider are a collective, a real band and an indication that musicians still get in a room and jam even in the digital era. Forming around the middle of the past decade after meeting through Adelaide's tight knit music community, the foursome (comprising of brothers Paul and John Bartlett, Scott Duncan and Joe Braithwaite) organically created a distinct sound, drawing influence from the likes of icons Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield through to modern contemporaries John Legend, Portishead and Erykah Badu. Word began to spread and before long, Lowrider were selling out intimate shows across the country and moving thousands of units of their highly acclaimed debut EP from word of mouth alone. In 2008, they followed this up with one of the most lauded Australian ... From: sxsw Views: 101 1 ratings Time: 03:44 More in Entertainment

Just Like Being There - SXSW 2012 Accepted Film
In the gig poster community, artists such as Daniel Danger and Jay Ryan prove that creating this artwork is a way of life, more than just a career. These artists are at the forefront of an expansion of the gig poster genre. MONDO's reinvigoration of "the film poster as an art form," and Gallery 1988's theme based exhibits are only two ways in which this artwork is reaching a greater public. In a community with strong roots, dating back to the 1960s, this expansion is controversial- refreshing to some, sacrilegious to others. Twitter Announces Censorship Plans, Chinese Netizens Outraged
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me Social media giant Twitter has made the announcement that it will begin to selectively censor content in certain national markets--perhaps including China, where it remains officially blocked. The plans are already running afoul of popular sentiment among Chinese who use the service. Twitter's new plans have led to a range of comments among Chinese users, all of whom are circumventing China's "Great Firewall" of Internet censorship, which blocks the site entirely. The Chinese-speaking Twitter community, that is, is already effectively taking a stand against censorship just by using the site. But now, many fear, the site itself might actively begin to censor content, on request by China's Communist regime authorities. Reactions have been swift. Noted Chinese activist Wen Yunchao tweeted a characteristic response with his appeal "Oh no! @twitter says going to start censoring tweets in certain countries. Pls ReTweet!" Others, such as the recently jailed dissident artist Ai Weiwei, tweeted that "If Twitter starts censoring, I'll stop tweeting." Yet some doubt whether Twitter's plans will include censorship for the Chinese regime. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, the Beijing-based commentator on Chinese investment and Internet development Bill Bishop made the point that Twitter has also committed to publishing "government takedown notices" with the Internet ... Tristen - "Baby Drugs": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
With her warm, guileless vocals and earnest, evocative songwriting, Tristen has emerged as a truly individual talent, bridging genres and emotions to create a distinctive sound all her own. The Nashville-based songstress' American Myth debut, Charlatans At The Garden Gate, is an ambitious and impassioned collection of finely honed modern pop, rich with exquisite arrangements and a remarkably intuitive lyrical approach. Weaving classic country, traditional rock 'n' roll, and reflective singer/songwriter balladry, songs such as the elegiac "Baby Drugs" and the spectral folk-tinged "Battle of the Gods" display an exceptional new artist opening herself to the world through heartfelt melodies and glorious hooks. Born Tristen Gaspadarek, she grew up in the Chicago suburb of Lansing, Illinois, where her musician father, instilled in her a love of music. She began singing from the time she could speak, took up the piano at the tender age of 8, and, inspired by her local Oldies 104.3 and The Beatles, began writing her own songs. It wasn't long before she picked up the guitar and started performing her original material in local coffeehouses. Upon graduating DePaul University in 2007 -- with a degree in Relational, Group, and Organizational Theories of Communication -- Tristen decided to focus on her music and moved to Nashville. "Nashville is a song town," she says of her journey, "and I felt like maybe I could give it a shot here, get away from home. You learn a lot about ... Jordie Lane - "Not From Round Here"
Jordie Lane was conceived on the muddy banks of the Murray River in Albury, Victoria, Australia. He grew up in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne in a fairly normal neighbourhood, but a not so normal household. With a 'comedian' mum and an actual 'clown' dad, they had the family in a travelling community Circus by the time Jordie could walk. Starting on the ukulele at 4 years old, and moving to 6-string electric guitar soon after, Jordie began learning Beatles songs and penning his own tunes before he had finished Primary School. Playing in a mixture of Jazz, Rock and Funk bands that won a bunch of awards throughout his teens, Jordie retreated to the bedroom after finishing High School, to really hone his unique finger picking guitar style, and find his voice and a story to tell. It wasn't till an offer from his mum Denise Scott, to collaborate in their 2004 'Barry' Nominated hit show "Scotty & Son" at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, that Jordie came out of the bedroom and took to the stage. He quickly developed the reputation as one of Melbourne's hardest working musicians, playing 6 nights a week in every little crap bar, all the while fashioning his own style of Suburban Blues-Folk and rich, honest lyricism. It's this brutally honest songwriter that is now being recognised as one of the country's best live touring artists in the Singer-songwriter/Roots genre, selling out headline shows right across Australia's premier music venues and Festivals. East Cameron Folkcore - "Sheeps": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Since Bankrupt & The Borrowers, a band founded by Jesse Moore, Blue Mongeon and multi-instrumentalist Jon Pettis that released one album - 2008's Beers on the Bible - before parting ways in the wake of Pettis' tragic death in an electrical fire, Moore's spent most of his time at the forefront of each of his musical projects. Most notably, Moore heads up East Cameron Folkcore, a ten-piece collective made up of musicians and singers in Moore's northeast Austin neighborhood. "All these friends lived in the same neighborhood, East Cameron," says Moore. "We'd all get together and try out new songs and arrangements. Jon played horns all the time, and he and I started this band as a side project so that I'd be able to use play songs I've had sitting in the vault that weren't exactly Borrower material." Since Bankrupt split, East Cameron Folkcore has taken over both as a vehicle for multi-instrumental experimentation and a celebration of the community in which Pettis so deeply engrossed himself. The collective recently released an album, April\'s Sound & Fury, as a loose-ended tribute to Pettis. Recorded over a full year, Sound & Fury is a massive conceptual undertaking, one complete with orchestral arrangements, horn sections and vocal contributions from multiple singers. Pettis\' soul shines throughout the album; over the somber tone of "The Cruellest Month" and the pain-through-struggle sentiment surrounding "Hollow Men," featuring the lyrics: "I see your face every place I go ...
