GOP Debates Exposing Conservative Dislike of Romney, Not So For '08 Dem Field
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 19:00:09 02/05/12
So Romney and his PACmen spent over fifteen million dollars worth of smear ads against Newt Gingrich in Florida to seal the deal of beating him in the third primary. Romney was upbeat afterward, but many movement conservatives were not.
Jonah Goldberg: What is Wrong With This Guy? >
Congratulations to Mitt Romney for his big win last night. It was a win that, Romney supporters hoped, would help bury concerns about his ability to seal the deal to do what it takes. But I’m not so sure. If you’re a straight-laced grown-up with money to burn, burying Newt Gingrich shouldn’t be that hard. Romney talked about the economy, Newt about lunar statehood (which I favor!). Romney drowned Gingrich in negative ads and Gingrich supplied endless fodder for the accurate ones and plausibility for the inaccurate ones. Was that really the test of his political chops everyone is saying? As a bunch of us have been writing around here for a while, the under-emphasized dynamic in this race isn’t that Romney isn’t conservative enough (though that’s obviously a real concern out there) it’s that he’s simply not a good enough politician.
Jonah and many other conservatives are really pissed that Mitt on the next day said that he's ' not very concerned about the poor.' >
“I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there,” Romney told CNN. “If it needs repair, I’ll fix it.
Oh, dear. That wasn't too bright. Bill O'Reilly was trying to downplay this flub on The Factor by saying the Democrats will seize on any single word by Mitt that they can take out of context to smear him. Nice try, Bill. It was a bonehead move. >
But great politicians on the morning after a big win, don’t force their supporters to go around defending the candidate from the charge that he doesn’t care about the poor. They just don’t.
You would think after all the rigorous training Mormons are known to subject their children to when it comes to speaking to large groups of people at a young age and then sending them out on two year conversion missions to hone their craft of convincing people to like them, Mitt is one big flop in that category. Unlike his father, who was legendary for his two years in European mission work, Romney just has a problem with connecting and he's making his base nervous.
A recent Pew Poll shows Mitt's unfavorable rating is up to 47% . I believe the GOP thought that having so many debates would give them a chance to constantly bash President Obama without supplying much substance other than lunar bases, hating the gay, electrocutions and building electric fences against Latinos, but what has happened is America is watching and the GOP is being hurt by the added attention. Many republicans really dislike Romney, but view him as the only one to able challenge Obama. I still am surprised by this poll since the country is suffering from the 2008 global financial meltdown. And before Florida's results were in the GOP elites were freaking out over Gingrich's rise and then his attacks of their anointed one.
I know many progressives are feeling very antsy right now with these GOP circus debates and primary days dominating the news cycles so I did a little research into how our base felt about our candidates to contrast the GOP contest at about the same time. Democratic voters were very pleased with the field of candidates that were running for election.
via Gallup Politics on 02/03/08 >
The new poll indicates that whatever the outcome, Democrats nationwide will be equally satisfied with their nominee. They show equal levels of enthusiasm for the prospects of Clinton and Obama each being on the ballot in November. In addition, they are no more likely to believe one of the candidates is more electable in the fall than the other.
Specifically:
Fifty-five percent of Democrats (including independents who lean to the Democratic Party) say they would vote for Obama "enthusiastically" in November were he the Democratic nominee; 53% say the same of Clinton.
Forty-five percent of Democrats think Clinton has the better chance of beating the Republican candidate for president in November; 43% choose Obama.
By contrast, Gallup finds more lopsided attitudes among Republicans -- working strongly in McCain's favor. Republicans are less enthusiastic about voting for each of the leading potential nominees than the Democrats are about theirs; however, McCain is the clear leader on this score over Romney. McCain also beats Romney handily in perceptions of which of the two has the better chance of winning in November.
In the Florida returns there is another troubling number that was revealed about Mitt and the rest of the current field. >
Another warning sign for Romney: Nearly 4 in 10 GOPers want someone else to run: And this also has to worry Romney and his team a bit, too: 38% of Florida Republican primary voters said they’d like to see someone else run for the GOP nomination, versus 58% who said they’re satisfied with the field. It’s a striking number, because these are Republicans who TURNED OUT and voted.
38% are hoping for a brokered convention I guess. Wow. Things are tough in this country and many on our side have been very disappointed, but if we elect a phony conservative like Romney at this point in time, the middle class may never, ever recover. GOP unrest is a good thing.

Occupy DC Celebrates Camping Ban By Erecting Massive Tent
[LESS INFO] 19 VIEWS | ADDED 14:00:00 01/31/12
A day after an Occupy DC protester was tased in the back by a Park Police officer, the media was out in force at Occupy DC. Monday to cover the Park Police’s noon deadline against camping at McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza, the largest remaining Occupy encampments.
Before their arrival the youthful protesters at McPherson draped a massive blue tarp over the statue of Gen. James B. McPherson and moved some of their tents underneath it. They dubbed it the “tent of dreams.”
The hope, among the protesters I spoke to, was the tent would force the Park Police into a confrontation, rather than allow them to arrest protesters one by one. At noon, there were just about as many members of the media as there were occupiers. They too were hoping for a confrontation.
That’s how the media has covered this movement, a series of confrontations with police: Brooklyn Bridge, Oakland tear-gassing, raid of Zuccotti, UC Davis pepper spray, McPherson “occubarn,” flag burning in Oakland.
Around 1 p.m., Park Police Sgt. Schlosser addressed the media horde about their plans. He said the camping ban enforcement will be ongoing, but they have no deadline for police action. Around 2 p.m. most of the cameras were gone.
The occupiers attempted to keep the remaining members of the media interested in what they had expected to be a pivotal day. They had a dance party with loud speakers. They mic-checked short speeches. They surrounded a Fox News police van that was blocking a fire hydrant and forced it to move.
They chanted "Fox News: slanted and biased" and "Fox News sucks!"
But their hyperactivity led them to miss a pivotal moment. With the nation’s media focused on their camp, they had no plan for a symbolic protest, other than to build an even larger tent, to show their defiance of a sleeping ban already upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
They masked their faces, gawked at their massive tent, and speculated about a police invasion that may or may not happen tonight. As of this evening, the rumor on Twitter (#J30) is that Park Police will come in at 11 p.m.
But some hope may still exist for two of the nation's last large Occupy encampments protesting against income inequality and money in politics. Today, a Georgia man filed a lawsuit in federal district court in D.C. claims the term "camping" is too broadly defined, according to the Washington Post . >
The suit filed Monday by Dane C. Primerano claims that enforcing the ban “will be a de facto prohibition upon the relevant assembly” and says “the term ‘camping’ is defined over-broadly.” His reasoning includes the argument that camping “encompasses activity that is unavoidable for destitute participants in a long-term political assembly, while … implicitly and wrongly suggesting that the behavior is somehow trivial, frivolous or optional.”
Destitution, Primerano’s suit alleges, is “the plaintiff’s state in fact.” Primerano said in court papers that he is unemployed and has $225 in a bank account. “We do not condition our sovereign citizens’ fundamental First Amendment rights on a capacity to pay market hotel rates,” the suit says.
The story notes that the complaint is similar to another claim by Occupy DC's lawyer Jeff Light. Light said at a General Assembly at McPherson on Friday that he is claiming police don't have the right to take protesters' property under the Fifth Amendment. Both claims will be addressed at a hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Sick of Sarah - "Giving Up": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
When the girls of Sick of Sarah jumped on the stage of Minneapolis' prestigious 7th Street Entry on April 7th, 2010, the room was shaking with excitement. The sold-out crowd pushed to get closer, waiting for a glimpse of the ladies that had only months earlier departed for a tour across country. After touring behind their self-titled debut LP for most of 2008/2009, Sick of Sarah had built some anticipation for their homecoming, "This was our final Minneapolis show before making the new record, we felt this was the end of the first chapter, and we couldn't wait to show everyone what was coming next," says Lead Singer, Abisha Uhl. That new chapter, 2205, was recorded in May at The Sonic Ranch in El Paso, TX, a studio made famous for its indie-rock clientele such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Conor Oberst, Portugal The Man, Taking Back Sunday, Trail of The Dead and its extensive amp and guitar collection including guitars from the Stevie Ray Vaughan estate. "We were able to just live, breath and sleep this album 24/7, a luxury we didn't have our first time recording," says bassist Jamie Holm. "Most of the songs had been demoed before we recorded, but we had to arrange the songs and write lyrics on spot." Some of those lyrics were inspired by the rumors of ghosts haunting the studios and housing, pet raccoons, and mementos discarded by previous artists. According to Uhl, "Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) left behind a piece of paper with the number of a therapist and masseuse in a dresser ... Hillary Clinton and American politics soon end: UN: Police seize 16 kilograms of cocaine

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that she will not stay, stating that after two decades, she is ready to step off the high wire of American politics --- Clinton said will stay on until the President nominates someonelse --- She said after 20 year of being it would be probably best to just find out how tired she is ---- stating that she loves the job but has found the constant international travel physically grueling --- Clinton said she plans to work as hard as she can to the last minute , but is now ready to return to her own interests such as reading, writing, and maybe teaching, along with some personal travel ### Last week at the U.N.'s mail intake center, a New York Police Department spokesman said a shipment containing 16 kilograms of cocaine was seized --NYPD's chief spokesman, said the drug was in a white bag, masquerading as a diplomatic pouch that raised suspicions when it was being scanned as it was stamped with what looked like a poor version of the U.N. logo, with no name or address on the shipment sent from Mexico City through Cincinnati --- The Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed the substance inside the shipment intercepted was cocaine --- U.N. undersecretary-general for safety and security Gregory B. Starr said that there is nothing to indicate that this had anything to do with anybody at the United Nations adding that it did not come from a United Nations facilityand in his opinion, it was not intended to go to a United Nations facility ********************************* THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION TO BUY OR SELL ANY SECURITY! Bloomberg Sports Super Bowl Preview: Five Stats that Matter
Bloomberg Sports Anchor Rob Shaw breaks down five stats that tell the story of the Giants meeting the Patriots once again in the Super Bowl. The first statistic may be the most shocking since the Patriots are coming off what seemed to be a dominant season, and yet the Ravens were the first team with a record greater than .500 to fall to the Pats this season. Next, this was the first game that Tom Brady failed to throw a touchdown pass since 2009. The Giants are the first team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl with a negative point diffierential during the regular season. In games that Eli Manning manages to avoid an interception, the Giants are 7-0. Finally, the Super Bowl will pit two pass-dominated offenses as the Patriots and Giants rank 20th and 32nd in rushing yards per game. For more interesting NFL insights visit BloombergSports.com. The so-called "Red Pad" is a high-powered tablet with an asking price that puts Apple's iPad to shame. A gadget tailored made for senior Chinese Communist officials is raising eyebrows online. Red Tails...
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 07:33:31 01/16/12
[ VIDEO ] In the mid-1990s, HBO aired a TV movie named The Tuskegee Airmen . Of course the movie starred Cuba Gooding who is also starring in the coming film also about the "Tuskegee Airmen" entitled Red Tails .
The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of a group of WW2 US Army Air Force (precedes the US Air Force) pilots that are well known for their exploits escorting American bombers in the skies of Europe. It started with the 99th Pursuit Squadron and the pilots of that squadron began their training at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). That unit actually still exist in the US Air Force as the 99th Flying Training Squadron .
Eventually the Tuskegee Airmen would be assigned to the 332d Fighter Group. As members of this Army Air Force unit, the tail of the planes would be painted crimson, and thus they acquired another nickname alluded to in the coming coming new film "red tails" or "red-tailed angels".
I read a story recently about how this film got to be made. It was produced by George Lucas who largely put up his own funds because Hollywood was unwilling to produce this project. I'm sure Hollywood was skittish about a project advertised as an action-flick with a mostly Black cast because they were unsure about whether or not money could be made. Even he tried to look at the big picture :
> But still, Lucas claims he foot the bill himself for the budget, because that’s how important getting the film out there was to him. Lucas also pointed out that he wanted to make the film for teenage boys (young, black teenage boys in particular), to show them real heroes and real role models (outside of the Jay-Zs and Michael Jordans as he said). However, while talking to the folks over at USA Today, he said the pressure of having it do well at the box office has him worried about what impact Red Tail‘s success could have on the success of future films with all black casts.
“I realize that by accident I’ve now put the black film community at risk,” Lucas said. “I’m saying, if this doesn’t work, there’s a good chance you’ll stay where you are for quite a while. It’ll be harder for you guys to break out of that (lower-budget) mold. But if I can break through with this movie, then hopefully there will be someone else out there saying let’s make a prequel and sequel, and soon you have more Tyler Perrys out there.” It wasn't just about the money but to help advance Black filmmakers. Perhaps even change the range of films they will be able to make. It also about giving the young boys the real heros and the real role models. Very laudable goals because the men the boys look up to will need some form of diversity. Who says you must only look up to entertainers and be entertainers?
You know I saw somewhere, some attribute his interest in doing this to the fact that he's dating a Black woman . This may be a true reason although certainly it's good thing what he seeks to do in this endeavor. It's still very important to be able to bring to the public the story of WW2's Tuskegee Airmen!
BTW George Lucas if you don't know owns Lucasfilm . His company has produced both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. They've made lots of money over the years so don't assume Red Tails will be a slouch on the silver screen!

Episode 136: A Rare Opportunity

I Was Just In The Neighborhood. I stayed at BC a few hours longer than the rest of our group not to take in the scenery, but to catch up with my old friend Dawa. Jeff was the first to head down and Steve and John followed a bit later leaving just me, Karma and Passang from our workshop group. While technically I?m still a client here in BC, I?ve finally managed to get the staff to understand that I?m ?one of them? and don?t need to be catered to in the same way as one of the participants. They?ve been doing an outstanding job ensuring the success of the group but when it?s just me up here they can turn off and just hang out. In fact, I encourage that kind of behavior! With Karma and Passang kicking back and enjoying the fine weather, the rest of the camp staff relaxed as well and I couldn?t have been happier. I know I?ve always got the best staff in the world to help me out but the reason I come back year after year is because these guys become lifelong friends of mine. Camp cook Dawa is a perfect example of that. Dawa and I became close during the 2003 expedition I was on with Ben Clark. Now, my job on that expedition was to document as much of it as possible but I was not a climber. So, Ben would disappear for weeks at a time further up on the mountain leaving me in Dawa?s care. That was my first experience in the Himalayas and I was extremely uncomfortable with being waited on hand and foot by the staff every day. Dawa was the one who listened to my incessant complaints about wanting to wash my own dishes and explained to me why it was important to just be OK with it. The staff has an incredible amount of pride in what they do and always strive to do the best job they can. I need to let them do what they do and if I am uncomfortable, just let them know how much I value the work they are doing for my by telling them how much I appreciate it. I took his advice and we became friends. That friendship was a crucial component of that 2003 experience for me and I?m not sure if I would have enjoyed the expedition if I hadn?t had Dawa. Let me ad to that sentiment: The Rest of Everest may not have existed if it weren?t for Dawa making that first trip such an amazing experience. I owe a lot to him and his generosity, kindness, patience and hard work. I thought I would be able to tell him all of that in person in 2007 when I returned to Everest with my friend Scott Jacobs but, alas, it was not to be. Mountain Tribes was scheduled to have a team on the North Side and Dawa was going to be the cook but 2 weeks before the climbing season began the permit was switched to the South Side. When Scott and I walked into BC, Dawa was already encamped on the other side of the mountain. I was crushed because I had come so far from home and was so looking forward to spending some time with Dawa. This year everything worked out perfectly and I was finally able to tell Dawa ?thanks? and to reminisce about that 2003 expedition now 6 years in the past. My, how time flies! I was also able to finally show him my favorite portions of the film myself and that was great fun. Another case of art imitating life imitating art. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how that 2003 expedition was going to change my life. Thanks Dawa. Total Running Time: 34:04

Chris Beat Me To It! Here is the first teaser video from our Everest 2010 Trek & Photography Workshop hosted my Chris Marquardt, Monika Andrae and me! As you?ll see, we had quite an adventure. Chris was first to have a teaser episode finished this year so he has kindly allowed me to add this video to my feed in case you haven?t seen it on his podcast yet or you are not a subscriber to his incredible, amazing, educational, entertaining and inspirational show. Interested in becoming a new subscriber to his podcast? Check it out atwww.tipsfromthetopfloor.com I?ll have the edit for my teaser episode finished soon and once I post it we?ll return to weekly episodes from Season 4 which cover the 2009 trek and workshop. I can?t wait to show all of you the rest of that amazing trip! Most of the material I filmed on the 2010 trip was shot in 3D using a special camera setup I created with the help of my good friend Danny Dodge. Familiar with the film Everest: The Other Side? Well, Danny is the narrator of that film. Thanks for the help with that, Danny! While the regular episodes of Season 5 will not be released in 3D, I will try to release a bonus ?3D teaser? in the coming weeks to show off that extra D and to see how many people I can get to wear the silly red/blue glasses we?re all familiar with! Anyway, enjoy this first teaser and be sure to stay tuned after the credits for another video from Chris that explains one of your favorite inside jokes from both the 2009 and 2010 trips. I may be famous for filming toilets in the Everest region but Chris? name is famous for quantifying what you do in said toilets. Enough said. Enjoy! Jon Miller Total Running Time: 19:02

Fashion Fails of the Week: Jessie J, Ashley Greene & More
PHOTOS: Elle Fanning wears a hippie dress, Jessie J wears retro lingerie, Ashley Greene's leather & lace combo falls flat and more style mistakes! Fashion is subjective- that we understand. But we can't help wonder what magic mirror Levin Ramblin was looking in before she hit the red carpet at the Weinstein Company party. This dress is so wrong. The color- the length the- we can't we just can't. But don't feel bad Levin- you're not alone. Check out who else made our list of fashion fails this week. Elle Fanning- you may be new to the biz, young and adorable- but you're not safe from being fashion roadkill! The flowered dress she wore at the Critics Choice awards is like hippie gone wrong. Jessie J- WTF?! This is not a dress. It is a piece of ripped fabric over a retro lingerie set- and it's not ok. The singer wore this to announce the nominations for the BRIT awards in London this week and we hope she forgets to pack it next time she's stateside. And Ashlee Green tried the leather and lace combo and failed- big time. We're not a fan of the way the dress fits. Come on Alice- you can see the future. Next time -- let's leave this dress out of it! From: CelebTV Views: 1033 19 ratings Time: 01:06 More in Entertainment
