Occupy New Year's Eve - Re-Occupation of Zuccotti Park
Occupy Wall Street reclaims Zuccotti Park for a few hours spanning midnight, New Year's Eve. Protesters seize the barricades that have surrounded the park since the November 15 eviction and piled them in the center of the park. The Occupiers weather a fierce attack by the NYPD, and even while being pepper-sprayed and beaten with barricades, manage to expel cops and Brookfield's private security from the park. The police back down until a large contingent of protesters leave the park in a march uptown that was not part of the event's plan and which may have been instigated by a police infiltrator. Initially promising that they will only take back the barricades and leave the people alone, the cops swarm the park and then kick out everyone. As is typical these days, press receive no special consideration, and we are left to document from a distance the NYPD's considerably less impressive victory. -------------------------------------------------------------- Do you have important Occupy Wall Street footage? Chinese Regime is Third Worst Jailer of the Press: CPJ Report
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt As the year comes to a close, the Committee to Protect Journalists documented a total of 179 journalists jailed for their work. The worst offenders are the in the Middle East and China. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, imprisoned journalists around the world reached the highest number in 15 years. Following Iran and Eritrea, China ranks as the third worst country for jailing journalists. Of the 179 confirmed reporters behind bars, 27 of them are in mainland China. The actual figure could be higher, as some cases may escape the notice of advocacy groups. [Zhao Yan, Former Reporter for The New York Times' Beijing Bureau]: "Hu Jintao said last year that China was to gradually loosen press control, so that China's news would be more open. But in fact, that's not the case that we see today. We know that the suppression of news reporters has become worse since the beginning of this year%mdashparticularly after the 'Jasmine Revolution' in the Middle East, which brought greater control of the news." As Chinese media is mostly state-controlled, more writers have been turning to the Internet for an outlet. Aside from journalists, online activists are now the latest group to be targeted. [Zhao Yan, Former Reporter for The New York Times' Beijing Bureau]: "The number of the arrested Internet citizen journalists is increasing year after year. 'Inter-provincial hunt,' a term ... Rally for Swedish Citizen Jailed Without Trial for 10 Years
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt A rally was held in Sweden for imprisoned writer Dawit Isaak. The Swedish-Eritrean citizen has been in jail in Eritrea for 10 years. Our correspondent in Stockholm has more. 10 years ago journalist, writer and poet Dawit Isaak was imprisoned without a trial in Eritrea. To mark this day people gathered outside the Eritrean embassy. The Swedish government has up to this day handled Dawit's case using silent diplomacy. A relay of speeches spoke out in opposition to this policy. Nearly 30 well-known journalists, writers, politicians and NGO representatives came to speak for Dawit%acutes release. Every Tuesday since 2004, letters from different organizations asking for his release have been handed over to the Eritrean Ambassador. Leif Orbrink has known Dawit since he came to Sweden 1987. [Leif Obrink, President of Free Dwait Isaak Committee]: "I feel sad because, I always tell people; ask people, what did you do on the 23rd of September 2001? And then they start to think and then I say, what have you done since? When they start to think about that, I say during that time, Dawit has been in a cell no bigger then 3.3 meters." Carin J%aumlmtin, the former Minister at the Foreign office, spoke at the assembly. Asked if she thinks silent diplomacy is a good response, she replied: [Carin J%aumlmtin, General Secretary, Social Democrats]: "He is not free which means it is not at all good ...
