What is an Astronaut's Life Worth?: An Interview with Robert Zubrin
"You're saying that you're going to give up four billion dollars to avoid a one in seven chance of killing an astronaut, you're basically saying an astronaut's life is worth twenty-eight billion dollars," says astronautical engineer and author Dr. Robert Zubrin. Zubrin, the author of a popular and controversial article in Reason's space-centric February 2012 Special Issue, argues that the risk of losing one of the seven astronauts who repaired and rescued the Hubble Space Telescope was well worth it. "If you put this extreme value on the life of an astronaut...then you never fly, and you get a space agency which costs seventeen billion dollars a year and accomplishes nothing." NASA's role, according to Zubrin, should be in the pursuit of ambitious missions such as "opening Mars to humanity," rather than a bloated, safety-obsessed bureaucracy. "The mission has to come first." Runs about 3.50 minutes. Produced by Anthony L. Fisher. Camera by Meredith Bragg and Josh Swain. After the last few stops in my Lightroom 4 Live Tour I realize there was a lot of questions on the Camera Calibration settings that basically, let you make your photo better with just one click. So I thought I'd take a minute to, not only go over the settings but also show you a couple of ways that you can have Lightroom automatically apply those settings to your photos so that you're not left doing it manually each time.

New Releases For February 21, 2012 - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 9 VIEWS | ADDED 20:00:00 02/20/12
This week's new releases has Vita again, a re-imagined Syndicate, some 3D Metal Gear, and an angry demigod.
SHOW NOTES:
GAME 1: PS Vita Official Release
We mentioned a few releases for Sony’s new handheld last week when they released the First Edition bundle, well this week is the official launch of the system. With 2 flavors available for purchase: the $250 Wi-Fi only version, and the $300 3G version.
Along with the games we mentioned last week, there are a few more games launching this week with the system including: Touch My Katamari, Army Corp of Hell, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, and Dynasty Warriors Next.
Because it just wouldn’t be a game system launch without a new Dynasty Warriors. Am I right?
GAME 2: Syndicate - PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Our first non-Vita related release this week is the re-imagining of the early 90’s cult classic Syndicate.
The game is now a first person shooter that takes place in a future where the world is controlled by Mega-Corporations, and business is war. You will play as the latest prototype agent of EuroCorp as you play through a game of corruption and revenge.
Syndicate’s player will utilize the DART 6 neural chip to slow down time, see through walls, and breach your enemy’s defenses. You’ll be able to upgrade your arsenal of weapons and armor, as well as take your opponents chip technology to enhance your own.
The game features an immersive science fiction world written by best selling author Richard Morgan. There is also 4-player online co-op that offers chip enhanced gameplay, as well as 9 missions reimagined from the original Syndicate.
The game sounds a little similar to last years Deus Ex prequel, but is that sounds good, you might want to give this one a shot.
GAME 3: Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D - 3DS
Next up we have the 3DS port of the third Metal Gear Solid game.
Metal Gear Sold Snake Eater 3D is a re-interpretation of the Playstation 2 game that introduced gamers to Naked Snake, who would eventually become the world famous Big Boss.
The game will have all of the story and gameplay of the original game and will feature auto stereoscopic 3D. It will also feature a “photo cam” system that will use the 3DS camera to let players take pictures of the real world and use it for the in game camo system. It will also use the system’s accelerometer to help Snake as he traverses the environment. Aside from these platform tweaks, it is the same game you’ve probably already played before.
Bottom line....it’s Metal Gear Solid 3.....in 3D....on your 3DS.
GAME 4: Asura's Wrath - PS3, Xbox 360
And lastly this week we have Asura’s Wrath. This game is basically an Asian God of War. In it you play as the demigod Asura, who is on a quest of revenge against the divine powers that cast you out of heaven, killed your wife, and kidnapped your daughter.
The game is an interesting fusion of Asian mythology and science fiction, that adopts a episodic narrative structure that gives the game a dramatic anime TV feel. It also gives gamers relentless action, and places them in situations and then says “ok, now get out of THAT.”
It’s a good thing that you’ll be able to harness your rage to help get you outta these situations. Build up your rage meter and unleash devastating attacks the one’s that betrayed you those thousands of years ago.
There is also a second playable character in the form of Asura’s rival Yasha, who has a different fighting style and can travel at lightning speed across the game’s environments.
In the end, it sound like an interesting take on the God of War formula, with a cool Asian meets sci-fi story.

Not only is it difficult to sync the clips up so they match, but you basically have to watch the video many times over to determine the best shots to keep. Perhaps you're not using multiple video clips, but have an external audio source that you prefer over the one captured by the camera. GAME 3: Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics
Next we have Mario and Sonic heading to London to again go head to head at the Olympic games.
There isn’t really much that needs to be said about this game. Mario, Sonic, and their friends go for the gold as they compete in many different Olympic events, like balance beam, soccer, and badminton. There are also new “Dream Events” which will feature alternate versions of games taking place in locations from past editions of the Mario and Sonic series.
In the end it’s basically a mini game collection with Mario and Sonic. If that sounds like something you’d be able to get behind, then by all means pick it up.
GAME 4: PS Vita First Edition Bundle & Games
And lastly this week. Sony’s new handheld the Vita doesn’t officially launch until next week, but looking to get a jump start, Sony is releasing a First Edition Bundle the will feature the 3G Vita, a 4GB memory card, a limited edition case, and a copy of the game Little Deviants. And of course you’ll need some games to go with that new system, and several games are launching along with the First Edition - Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, wipEout 2048, Lumines: Electronic Symphony, and many more.
So if you wanted a Vita, and want to get a jump start on everyone else, go pick this up.

James O'Keefe's Voting Stunt Has State, Feds Investigating
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 03:00:03 01/13/12
Let's get this out of the way: James O'Keefe, the wannabe gotcha journalist who can't hide his punk stupidity , is a big, fat liar . If he directs his hidden camera at you, you can be sure that what turns up will be wildly edited and quickly discredited .
O'Keefe loves to go after liberal stalwarts: ACORN, NPR, voting and democracy. You know, basically things that aren't at all threats to anything other than the mindset that we're a center-right nation. In his latest stunt, he tried to "prove" that voting fraud was rampant, with dead people actually voting in the New Hampshire primary. Except.... >
With his last set of videos largely seen as meaningless and pathetic , his fundraising in shambles , and his allies leaving him in disgust , O'Keefe clearly hopes to press this non-issue to revive his standing in the conservative movement. As always , the Daily Caller is happy to help out, already trumpeting the "bombshell video" that they received "exclusively" from O'Keefe.
In the service of this aim, O'Keefe and associate Spencer Meads visited a number of polling locations during the January 10 New Hampshire primaries armed with hidden cameras. At each polling location, the videographer in question would approach a poll worker who was checking in voters and ask the poll worker if a recently deceased voter's name is on the rolls. When the poll worker, assuming that the right-wing operative is presenting themselves as that person, attempts to give them a ballot, the videographer says that they don't have their ID and leaves.[..]
But O'Keefe's claim [of rampant fraud] aside, there is simply no evidence that such fraud occurs more often then, say, community organizations are asked to help set up child sex rings. In a 2007 report , the Brennan Center for Justice reported that there are a "handful" of cases when votes have actually cast in the names of the deceased, compared to thousands of such allegations that ultimately proved fruitless .
Again, this whole conservative bugaboo demanding Voter ID to prevent voter fraud is a solution to a non-existent problem, and one that has been shown to actually prevent legitimate voting from taking place . But convicted parolee O'Keefe may have reached too far: >
[E]lection law experts tell TPM that O’Keefe’s allies could face criminal charges on both the federal and state level for procuring ballots under false names, and that his undercover sting doesn’t demonstrate a need for voter ID laws at all.
Federal law bans not only the casting of, but the “procurement” of ballots “that are known by the person to be materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent under the laws of the State in which the election is held.”
Hamline University law professor David Schultz told TPM that there’s “no doubt” that O’Keefe’s investigators violated the law.
“In either case, if they were intentionally going in and trying to fraudulently obtain a ballot, they violated the law,” Schultz said. “So right off the bat, what they did violated the law.”
The NH Attorney General's office and the US Attorneys' office in NH have both issued statements that they are launching investigations. Unfortunately, it looks at first blush that the NH AG's office is focusing more on O'Keefe's allegation of the ease of voter fraud than the fraud that O'Keefe himself is committing.
And if that is the case, there needs to be pushback immediately. O'Keefe deserves no such legitimization of his work with his history. Luckily, there are some in NH that see that clearly : >
Officials in Nashua and Manchester said the filmmaker should be arrested.
“They should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. When I was in the Senate, I always heard, ‘This never happens.' This is proof this happens,” said Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas.
“People who pull stunts like this should be prosecuted,” Nashua City Clerk Paul Bergeron said.
Actually, it doesn't happen, Mayor Gatsas. The video shows no votes cast. But it sure shows O'Keefe and his helpers trying to interfere with the voting process, which is a Class D Felony. Not exactly something someone on parole would want to be charged with, is it? >
Actually, the would-be voter gets his hands on ballots only nine times in the 10-minute, seven-second Project Veritas video.
In one, the clerk directly asks the person if he is the man listed on the checklist.
At that point, the person said he was just checking to see if the checklist designates the voter as deceased.
In another, the dead person is not on the checklist, and the clerk encourages the person to register to vote.
Another time, the would-be voter left after poll workers started asking question about the name he gave, Manchester City Clerk Matt Normand said.
“It just so happens the ward moderator recognized the name as not being that person,” Normand said.
The moderator, Gloria Pilotte, asked to speak to the undercover voter to see if there was some mistake.
He left before they had a chance to speak.
“He never got a ballot,” Normand said.
That instance is not on the video.
