TEDxOxford - Kevin Warwick - Cyborg Interfaces In this talk Kevin Warwick, professor of Cybernetics at Reading University presents his talk on Cyborgs at TEDxOxford on 26th September 2011. He presents ideas on bringing back sight to the blind, allowing humans to see with sonar, and communicating with thought alone by combining artificial components with humans. TEDxOxford is a conference run entirely by students of Oxford University for young people. To find out more about TEDxOxford see www.tedxoxford.com About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Background Information Cybernetics is the interdisciplinary study of the structure of regulatory systems. Cybernetics is closely related to information theory, control theory and systems theory, at least in its first-order form. (Second-order cybernetics has crucial methodological and epistemological implications that are fundamental to the field as a whole.) Both in its origins and in its evolution in the second half of the 20th century, cybernetics is equally applicable to physical and social (that is, language-based) systems. (Source Wikipedia)

TEDxManhattanBeach - Yaw Adutwum - Accountability and Expectations: Changing Student's Performance Talk title: Accountability and expectations: changing students' performance In South Los Angeles a tragic 29% of all students fail to complete high school. Those who graduate often find they don't have the skills to work, to enter a top university, or to succeed in community colleges. Yaw Adutwum founded New Designs Charter School with a simple idea: we must require that students master the skills they need for university. Higher expectations are not enough; we must have higher requirements. New Designs students must meet the entry requirements for the University of California to graduate, for instance every student must pass pre-calculus. "Is it challenging? Yes, but it can be done," says Yaw, who invites us to stand by the children of South Los Angeles. An educator and community activist born in Ghana, Yaw is the founder and CEO of the New Designs Charter School in South Los Angeles. Yaw recognized that while students in south Los Angeles had strong intellectual ability, they lacked motivation and academic self-esteem. He has designed school programs that boost morale and provide students a powerful foundation in mathematics, science, technology and the arts. TEDxManhattanBeach - Joel Spoonheim - You Make Me Sick Joel Spoonheim talks about the work he is doing to create new Blue Zones. Specifically the processes that he is using to transform communities into healthier places to live. His work builds on the idea that we should stop just treating individual patients and shift some of our focus to changing the environment that patients live in. He closes with a plea that as individuals we should demand healthy choices, help create them and select them once they are available. About TEDx, x = independently organized event. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) Background information Blue Zone is concept used to identify a demographic and/or geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives, as described in Dan Buettner's book, "The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from people who lived the longest." The concept grew out of demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain, who identified Sardinia's Nuoro province as the region with the highest concentration of male centenarians. As the two men zeroed in on the cluster of villages with the highest longevity, they drew concentric blue circles on the map and began referring to the area inside the circle as the Blue Zone. Buettner identifies longevity hotspots in Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and among the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, and offers an explanation, based on empirical data and first hand observations, as to why these populations live healthier and longer lives. Blue Zones is also a company founded by Dan Buettner that uses evidence-based practices of groups and cultures from around the world to help people live longer, healthier and better lives, and offers educational and information resources, community health programs, foods and food services, real estate developments and consumer goods. TEDxManhattanBeach - Charlotte Lesser - Creating Neighborhood Watch Charlotte Lesser was the primary founder of the Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Watch program in 1981. It is a major factor in the reduction of residential burglary in the city and is considered one of the best Neighborhood Watch programs in the country. She has also served on the Los Angeles County Commission for Women, and worked with a multitude of other local and national charities and organizations. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Background information: Neighborhood watch A neighborhood watch or neighbourhood watch (see spelling differences), also called a crime watch or neighborhood crime watch, is an organized group of citizens devoted to crime and vandalism prevention within a neighborhood. In the United States it builds on the concept of a town watch from Colonial America. A neighborhood watch may be organized as its own group or may simply be a function of a neighborhood association or other community association. Neighborhood watches are not vigilante organizations. When suspecting criminal activities, members are encouraged to contact authorities and not to intervene. The current American system of neighborhood watches began developing in the late 1960s as a response to the rape and murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York. People became outraged after reports that a dozen witnesses did nothing to save Genovese or to apprehend her killer. Some locals formed groups to watch over their neighborhoods and to look out for any suspicious activity in their areas. Shortly thereafter, the National Sheriffs' Association began a concerted effort in 1972 to revitalize the "watch group" effort nationwide. Some German states, such as Bavaria, have instituted systems of citizen patrols (Sicherheitswacht) where unarmed teams of two volunteers patrol assigned areas to improve subjective security. These teams carry a radio to call for help if necessary and a white armband with black letters identifying them as a neighborhood watch patrol. Citizens in Baden-WĂźrttemberg can participate in a Volunteer Police programme, where approx. 1,200 citizens voluntarily assist their local police in 20 towns. These volunteers are specially trained, wear uniforms and are armed. Their main duty is crime prevention: conducting walking patrols to deter street crime, patrolling near schools and kindergartens and maintaining contact with potential victims of crime and juvenile delinquents. There are also citizens in Hessen that participate in a Volunteer Police program, where they can assist their local police. The volunteers are trained for 50 hours, receive a blue uniform, pepper spray and a mobile phone. Their main duty is crime prevention: conducting walking patrols to deter street crime, patrolling near schools and kindergartens and maintaining contact with potential victims of crime and juvenile delinquents. People can also join the Wachpolizei which has less competencies (and less pay) than regular police to perform basic police tasks such as traffic or guard duties, releasing regular officers for patrol work. TEDxManhattanBeach - Peter Barsuk - Architectural Design That Transforms Learning Talk title: Architectural design that transforms learning In Peter's architectural practice he explores how the build environment can enhance learning. The newest education spaces encourage four learning modes of the typical school day: socializing, creating, focusing and collaborating. "Campfire" settings allow kids to socialize and create, "performance nooks" are informal spaces where kids can perform, and inexpensive graphics encourage students to feel a sense of wonder and curiosity. "Far from forcing change upon schools," says Peter, "we're finding that the way people learn is transforming the built environment." Peter is an architect at Gensler, with over nineteen years of experience in education and green building design. As a director of the firm's education practice area, he is charged with incorporating the latest research, technology, and thought leadership into the design and delivery of Gensler's projects. A passionate environmentalist, Peter encourages resource conservation through design thinking, both in the office and local community through lectures, the formulation of grass roots initiatives and volunteer committees.
