Cisco Live UK Day 5: Bloodhound Super Sonic Car
This is Cisco Live UK: Day 5 So we've had an absolute blast over the last 5 days here in London at Cisco Live. We saw thousands of visitors, customers, and industry thought-leaders. One of the most unique things we saw was the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car (SSC). This car is part of a project to break the land speed record by traveling at a target speed of 1050 miles per hour! The project's mission is to "To confront and overcome the impossible using science, technology, engineering and mathematics." That's quite a mission statement! The Project Director is Sir Richard Noble, who also took part in a keynote address at Cisco Live UK. In the video below, Peter Granger speaks to Jonathon Cooke, who was displaying the actual SSC and its jet engine on the event floor. Jonathon is studying Mechanical Engineering at Bath University and is one of the 'Ambassadors' for the project (part of the 'Ambassador's Program'). Cisco has provided equipment (Networking and Video Equipment) to help develop the Bloodhound SSC vehicle and its technology center. This is a great example of how Cisco is helping in the manufacturing industry with R%D and enabling Innovation and product development cycles in manufacturing. Learn more about Cisco's partnership with Bloodhound SSC in this video: www.youtube.com blogs.cisco.com From: Cisco Views: 163 2 ratings Time: 02:21 More in Science & Technology

Program Helps Kids Face Family Drug Addiction
Breaking the cycle of substance abuse in families is the goal of a new program geared toward Baltimore middle and high school students, and it's the brainchild of a successful R%B singer from Baltimore who dealt with the problem himself. The Big Sleep - "Ace": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
The Big Sleep is a Brooklyn, NY based trio, comprised of Danny (guitar), Sonya (bass) and Gabe (drums). They formed somewhere around 2003. In February 19, 2008, the band released Sleep Forever, follow-up to their debut album Son Of The Tiger, released September 19, 2006. The Big Sleep will release a new album called "Nature Experiments", which will be out on January 31, 2012. Considering how quiet they've been over the past couple years, you'd think the Big Sleep decided to suddenly take their name seriously after the tireless tour cycle behind 2008's Sleep Forever LP. The truth is much simpler... "We took a little break, worked on stuff separately and just lived our lives," explains bassist/vocalist Sonya Balchandani. "It obviously took longer than we thought it would," adds guitarist/vocalist Danny Barria, "but I wasn't feeling rushed or pressured. I just wanted to write good songs." Which brings us to the hefty hooks and sugar-spun noise pop of Nature Experiments, the filler-free full-length Danny and Sonya have hinted at since 2000. That'd be the year the duo started cutting demos in the former's Brooklyn kitchen; demos that eventually shifted from a loose shoegaze sound (the You Today, Me Tomorrow EP) to the iridescent instrumentals and groove-locked guitar anthems of the Big Sleep's debut album, 2006's Son of the Tiger. The company sees vast potential in Greece's known but so far undeveloped mineral resources. The president and Chief Executive Officer of Eldorado Gold Corporation, said on Monday the company's investment in Greece was what the debt-stricken country needed to help emerge from the crisis. [Paul Wright, President and CEO, Eldorado Gold Corp.]: "We firmly believe that our investment in this country is exactly what is needed to help break the current negative cycle of austerity and bring much needed employment, foreign investment and tax revenue to Greece." Eldorado said on Sunday it has agreed to acquire European Goldfields as it expands its asset base in Greece and Turkey. European Goldfields operates one mine and is developing another two deposits in northeastern Greece. Wright said the Canadian international gold producer will create 2000 jobs in the country both for the operation of mines and for exploration. [Paul Wright, President and CEO, Eldorado Gold Corp.]: "Eldorado intends to invest in the order of 1.5 billion euros over the next several years in new mine development and infrastructure." How do you solve a problem like the debt crisis?
www.euronews.net European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has unveiled a plan he says "charts Europe's way out of the economic crisis". He said the region's banks have to be strengthened urgently to win back confidence and they need to put aside more money to cover future losses as - "like it or not" - the sovereign debt problem is linked to the fate of the banks. Barroso told lawmakers in the European Parliament: "To break the vicious cycle of uncertainty over sovereign debt sustainability and over growth prospects, we need comprehensive solutions now.
