Turn Your Home's Spring Cleaning into MISSION POSSIBLE

California Closets
Irwin Weiner ASID - When was the last time you did a proper spring clean at home and had a really good clear out? If it's been a long time, then choose a weekend, organize the family, and decide to do it - you have no idea how good it feels!
We asked a British friend to describe her family's spring cleaning mission: >
" The biggest challenge in my house was the kitchen . I am embarrassed to say that it has been at least two years since I emptied out every single cupboard and drawer and had a thorough sort out. I am still reaping the benefits weeks later, and cannot help but have a small smug smile when I reach into a cupboard and can actually find what I need without a big rummage. It will be interesting to see how long I can keep this tidiness up for as going off my previous record things may soon start to slip . . .
"By freeing up storage space, as I am no longer the shameful owner of any out-of-date foodstuffs, and I have also created more space on my kitchen worktops . Things which don%rsquot get used everyday and were permanently cluttering up the counter - such as my food processor - have now found happy homes out of sight, and I have more room to prepare meals. The whole experience has left me wishing I had done it sooner, and I have been boring friends and neighbours %ndash and now you! %ndash with the reasons to get on board and join me.
"All this enthusiasm has brought me to the point where I think I am about ready to tackle the dreaded garage. I think the key to this will be hiring a skip and doing my best to fill it: a ruthless approach to hoarding and a no-nonsense attitude when it comes to weeding out the kids' toys. Wish me luck, I really think I am going to need it!"
DESIGN2SHARE TIPS: There are some ugly chores we don't like to tackle, and they regularly visit us each spring. Here are some ways to accomplish those important and often neglected chores.
* Spring cleaning is an important part of an even larger spring home maintenance program to keep your home running in tip-top order. Read our Time to Make Your Spring Home Checklist, an article that will save you time, trouble, and money.
* GREEN Spring Cleaning is a tip-filled article that will give you great eco-friendly ways to get those home cleaning jobs tackled in style!
* Finally, we couldn't stop laughing when we saw this made-for-couples how-to video (don't worry; it's PG rated!) from the funny folks at Howcast, helping us turn spring cleaning into a sexy game. Okaaaaaaay . . .

In The Wealthiest County In The U.S., Food Banks Strain To Keep Up With Demand
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 16:00:24 11/23/10
So the amoral Republican "patriots" are doing everything they can to block more unemployment extensions, and they'll probably be successful. (All I can say is, I sometimes dream of guillotines.)
But if you have anything left to spare, please consider a donation of food or money to your local food bank. They're struggling everywhere. These folks are knocking themselves out to help against some stunning odds , and anything you can do in the name of our common humanity is a help: >
The economy may be showing signs of life, but food pantries and other nonprofit food-distribution agencies around the region say they are struggling to meet record-breaking demand as the holidays approach.
In Loudoun County - the nation's wealthiest county measured by median income - the food pantry is distributing its first-ever Thanksgiving meal, giving food to 2,000 families. In Montgomery County, the Manna Food Center added some Saturday hours for the convenience of working families. And in Fairfax County, the nonprofit Our Daily Bread is facing the grim reality that, although it will feed 2,400 people, it may not be able to help as many 650 needy families at Thanksgiving.
Lynn Brantley, president and chief executive of the Capital Area Food Bank in Northeast Washington, said this year was the most difficult in the organization's 30-year history. The food bank - the main supplier of food to more than 700 agencies and nonprofit groups around the Capital Beltway - will distribute a record-breaking 30 million pounds of food, up from 27 million last year.
"With this economy, things are pretty bleak," Brantley said. "People on Main Street are not rebounding."
Bread lines have become commonplace , including the 3,000 people who waited for groceries and personal-care items in Northeast last week at a giveaway co-sponsored by PepsiCo and the dozens who gathered in front of the Loudoun Interfaith Relief center Friday.
Many are unemployed or underemployed, and their desperation is palpable.
Joyce Crawford used to make a big Thanksgiving spread for her children and grandchildren every year, with turkey, ham, macaroni and cheese, and steaming bowls of collard greens.
That was before - before she lost her job as a secretary, before she went on unemployment and then to a minimum-wage job raking leaves, before she had to give up her place to move in with her 37-year-old daughter. Now, she said, she doesn't have anywhere of her own.
But this Thanksgiving she is determined to cook as usual, even though she's broke and has to squeeze into her daughter's tiny apartment kitchen to do it. For Crawford, it all came down to a donated 12-pound Safeway brand turkey in a cardboard box. She might not have all the traditional trimmings, but she had that.

Pumpkin Pancakes – Seasonal, Not Salacious!
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 23:46:07 11/17/10
I know what you're thinking. I'm in the pocket of Big Pumpkin, and have been using so much canned pumpkin lately, not because I like it so much, but because I'm being paid to. I wish! (Big Pumpkin, call me ;-)
No, the truth of the matter is, I'm simply using the time-honored strategy of turning any recipe into a "holiday recipe" by adding some pumpkin. It really does work – whether chili, bread, soup, or cookies – just plop in a spoon or two of pumpkin, and you are in seasonally appropriate heaven!
Here we are taking a very standard pancake recipe, and with the addition of pumpkin, and a few classic pumpkin pie spices, have turned it into what would be a memorable holiday brunch item.
I also have it on very good authority that this works quite nicely as a winter breakfast-for-dinner special. I hope you give it a try soon. Enjoy!
Pumpkin Pancakes Ingredients
Mix in one bowl:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon table salt
Mix in another bowl:
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1 egg
1 1/2 cups milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Combine and make pumpkin pancakes!

Pistachio Crusted Rack of Lamb – You'll Go Nuts for this Beautiful Rack!
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 23:44:53 11/17/10
The holidays bring us so many joyous things. Sharing time with family, watching your boss do a drunken karaoke version of "It's Raining Men" at the office party, and of course, those special meals. This super easy rack of lamb recipe has special written all over it – well, actually more like has special all pressed into it.
Sure, rack of lamb is a little pricey, but no more so than other special occasion meats like prime rib, beef tenderloin, or goose – and since they're sold completely trimmed, you'll have virtually no waste. Also, if you haven't had lamb in like the last 20 years, you're in for a nice surprise; the meat is lean, tender, and not at all gamey.
The other great thing about today's rack of lamb is it's consistent size. They will have eight rib bones, and run just under 1 1/2 pounds each. The fact that these are all the sa me weight makes life a lot easier when cooking more than one. Speaking of which, portioning here is very easy; simply allow one rack per two guests.
As far as the crust goes, we've added rich, sweet pistachios to the traditional Dijon mustard crust. This gives the lamb such an interesting flavor and texture. It may be my imagination, but I think there's something about what makes the pistachios green (chlorophyll?), which makes it pair so perfectly with the meat. It also looks pretty damn cool.
I'm a big turkey-for-Thanksgiving guy, but if you're looking for a unique dinner entrée idea for that Christmas or New Years feast, this pistachio crusted rack of lamb would be an excellent choice. Enjoy!
Ingredients for 4 Portions of Pistachio Crusted Rack of Lamb
2 fully trimmed racks of lamb (just under 1 1/2 pounds each)
1 teaspoon Herbes de Provence, or dried Italian herb blend
salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
1 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil for searing
3 tbsp Dijon mustard
For the crust:
2/3 cup finely chopped roasted pistachios
2 tablespoon plain bread crumbs
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 teaspoon olive oil
pinch of salt and fresh ground black pepper
*Note: the cooking time given in the video of 25 minutes will work if you are doing one or two, but if you load up the oven for a large group, you'll obviously need to increase the cooking time, as the oven temperature will drop. Use a thermometer to check the internal temperature. Remove at between 125 and 130 degrees F. for a nice pink center.
