Episode #111: Yinka Shonibare MBE discusses the theatricality and sense of wonder inherent in his public sculpture "Nelson's Ship in a Bottle," installed on the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. Situated across from "Nelson's Column," a monument erected to honor Admiral Lord Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars, the brightly-colored sails of Shonibare's boat reference the complex heritage of British colonialism and its multicultural present.
Known for using batik in costumed dioramas that explore race and colonialism, Yinka Shonibare MBE also employs painting, sculpture, photography, and film in work that disrupts and challenges our notions of cultural identity. Taking on the honorific MBE as part of his name in everyday use, Shonibare plays with the ambiguities and contradictions of his attitude toward the Establishment and its legacies of colonialism and class. In multimedia projects that reveal his passion for art history, literature, and philosophy, Shonibare provides a critical tour of Western civilization and its achievements and failures.

Shireen Tadros PTC They fled the frontlines of this war... knowing that Israel's assault would follow them. In Gaza, nowhere is safe and nobody is immune from the onslaught. There are hundreds of refugees now living in makehift centres like this school in Gaza City. Thirteen thousand have already been DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES, according to the UN. Noha left her home on the outskirts of the Strip with her husband and three children. Her youngest, Marwa, hasen’t been changed in 3 days. The milk she is drinking is the last bottle Noha has for her… SOT NOHA – REFUGEE I want to tell people outside to do something, why is Palestinian blood so cheap to you? Why are our neighbours living in peace but we are deprived of that? What have the children done to deserve this? Why should my daughter drink milk from a dirty bottle? She won’t even take it anymore. What did we do wrong? They bring us some milk, a blanket- we don’t want it! we want to go home and eat and sleep and live like everyone else. Where is the great Arab world that they taught us about at school? They have left us…shame on them. Conditions here are deteriorating..creating a CLEAN, SAFE shelter in a warzone is no easy task. This is the only place they can get clean water, but you can see most of the taps aren’t working and people are using this sink to wash their hands, their faces, their feet…and they're also using it to drink from because it’s the only clean water in the whole school” We could feel the anger all around the shelter.... disappointment at the inaction of the international community….and rage at the Arab leaders who they feel have sold them out. SOT Sobhi Rizk - Refugee Where are the authorities, where are our leaders..they have shut their eyes. Why is it that children around the world are allowed to live in peace but not Palestine’s children? Aren’t we all the same, the children of God. We just want to be free to live in peace. 61 members of Sobhi Rizk’s family are now living in this shelter….his granddaughter amal was overwhelmed by what was happening around her.. SOT Amal Rizk - Refugee I am crying for the children of Gaza that have been thrown in the streets. We have nothing to do with this. We don’t fire rockets, we don’t know what this war is about. Why should children be forced to drink dirty water, what did we do wrong? where is everyone?! Refugees are a casualty of every war. But in Gaza, there is nowhere safe to flee. Mayday Riots 1st May 2008 Berlin

My experiences at the Mayday riots, Berlin, 2008. Berlin is just a crazy town. Where else do they celebrate the coming of spring with a good 'ol battle? It is almost like a ceremonial event these days, (a riot as a ceremony?) but still dangerous, as explosives and flying debris is still used on the Police (they like to test their riot gear I reckon!) The rioters light a fire and challenge Police...the Police move in to extinguish fire...but then get forced to retreat...in a tightly knit Roman formation..covering all flanks....they would go back to and fro...until they launch their all out assult... I copped a beer bottle in the head, and I got shoved by Police. But I could tell it wasnt personal, its just an excuse for the Germans to let of steam after winter and celebrate spring with a good ol Battle!! riot! riot! riot!
