Our Place in the Cosmos
Google Tech Talk (more info below) December 1, 2011 Presented by Raja (Puragra) GuhaThakurta. ABSTRACT The lecture "Our Place in the Cosmos" explains how we (and, for that matter, all complex life forms) are connected to the Universe around us. This connection relies on the fact that our Milky Way and other galaxies like it play host to cosmic recycling processes that involve the formation of stars and their planetary systems inside nebulae (dense gas/dust clouds), nuclear fusion reactions that occur within stars, and the death of massive stars in explosions known as supernovae. As a result of these processes the Earth contains elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, all of which are essential ingredients of protein molecules that are basic building blocks of life on Earth. To understand our origin we must therefore understand how galaxies form as part of the so-called cosmic web and evolve via galaxy cannibalism: merging and destruction of small satellite galaxies whereby their stars are incorporated into larger galaxies. This portion of the story will take us back to the earliest imaginable times in the history of the Universe. The talk will be illustrated with the latest astronomical images obtained using space-/ground-based telescopes and state-of-the-art computer simulations. Speaker Info: Raja (Puragra) GuhaThakurta received a bachelor's degree in Physics at Saint Xavier's College in Kolkata, India and a Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University in ... How To Layout Fireplace Tile
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 08:00:12 11/09/11
In response to a viewer question, we are zooming in one more level with fireplace design and looking at the best way to layout the finishing tile and position the grout lines. This is more critical with larger format tiles as the grout line locations can have a major impact on the completed visual effect of the fireplace detailing. The basic rule of thumb is you want to maximize the use of full tiles. If your tile size is 12 X 24 inches, then you want to use as many full tiles as possible, keeping the number of cuts and grout lines to a minimum. If possible, try to avoid having a “sliver” or short-cut row of tile anywhere in your layout. If you do have a short-cut row, try shifting the entire tile layout up or down to distribute … Continue reading →

DocEng 2011: Reflowable Documents Composed from Pre-rendered Atomic Components
The 11th ACM Symposium on Document Engineering Mountain View, California, USA September 19-22, 2011 Reflowable Documents Composed from Pre-rendered Atomic Components Alex Pinkney, Steven Bagley, David Brailsford Presented by Alex Pinkney. ABSTRACT Mobile eBook readers are now commonplace in today's society, but their document layout algorithms remain basic, largely due to constraints imposed by short battery life. At present, with any eBook file format not based on PDF, the layout of the document, as it ap- pears to the end user, is at the mercy of hidden reformatting and re- flow algorithms interacting with the screen parameters of the device on which the document is rendered. Very little control is provided to the publisher or author, beyond some basic formatting options. This paper describes a method of producing well-typeset, scalable, document layouts by embedding several pre-rendered ver- sions of a document within one file, thus enabling many computationally expensive steps (eg hyphenation and line-breaking) to be carried out at document compilation time, rather than at 'view time'. This system has the advantage that end users are not con- strained to a single, arbitrarily chosen view of the document, nor are they subjected to reading a poorly typeset version rendered on the fly. Instead, the device can choose a layout appropriate to its screen size and the end user's choice of zoom level, and the author and publisher can have fine-grained control over all layouts. 313 - Easy Timeline & Timeline 3D V3 [Full Show with Subtitles]
[LESS INFO] 60 VIEWS | ADDED 08:35:46 09/16/11
Easy Timeline and Timeline 3d are two amazing applications that allow you to create stunning, cinematic, timeline based interactive presentations and beautiful documents. This week’s tutorial takes you through the basics of timeline creation and illustrates the differences between the two applications, with Easy Timeline now available via the Mac App Store for the first time. Easy Timeline and Timeline 3D both offer a simple way to create and enhance timeline based presentations. Each allows you to simply add events and multimedia clips to a timeline and display your timeline in an interactive 2D or 3D visualisation.
Ideal for live presentations, both applications have been enhanced to allow for easy control in a live situation via onscreen controls, the keyboard or an Apple Remote.
Simply create events adding titles, dates, descriptions and even images, audio and video clips and the applications will render them into a gorgeous 2D or 3D display with full control on the "look" of the timeline.
**Easy Timeline** has just been released via the Mac App Store and gives you all the functionality of timeline creation, just like Timeline 3D, the "Pro" version of the app. Create and present your timelines using all the standard tools available. Created with students and the occasional user in mind, this inexpensive app really is timeline creation "for the rest of us!
**Timeline 3D** has the same creation and display functions as Easy Timeline but allows for much greater flexibility when creating and exporting your timelines. Timeline 3D allows you to import events directly from many standard Mac applications such as Address Book, Aperture, Basecamp by 37signals ,iCal, iPhoto, iTunes, NetNewsWire by Black Pixel, OmniFocus by OmniGroup, Skitch by Plasq, Software Updates, The Hit List by Potion Factory, Things by Cultured Code, even RSS / Atom Feeds or information pulled from Software Update, as well as via Custom import via AppleScript, Custom import via tab-delimited text. (Easy Timeline supports the Custom import options only).
Once you have created your timeline, Timeline 3D has a wealth of export options to allow you to export your finished timeline as a fully rendered HD Quicktime movie, export directly to YouTube or even integrate with Keynote, allowing you to incorporate fully interactive 3D animated timelines within your Keynote presentation.
Both applications are fully localised in multiple languages allowing you to create timelines in globalised formats including localised date formats.
The tutorial takes you through the basics of timeline creation and explores many of the features of both Easy Timeline and Timeline 3D

While the most basic switch is... well, quite basic, there's a crazy-huge variety of switch types and sizes available to the electronics maker nowadays. Those new to the soldering and schematics scene will surely benefit from an introduction to some of the terms and formats relevant to various switch species.

The Dell screen had only VGA output so i used a VGA to DVI adapter in order to connect it to the graphics card. The 5770 card has three ports; HDMI, DVI and Display Port. Unfortunately, the ""Display Port"" is almost useless, i don't need it, it's uncommon and it would be alot better if there was a DVI or HDMI port so i could connect a third monitor.
