President Obama Speaks Before a Cabinet Meeting
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 04:41:45 02/01/12
President Obama Speaks Before a Cabinet Meeting Transcript: Hello, everybody. This is our first Cabinet meeting after my State of the Union address, and it gives me an opportunity to share my ideas and initiatives with my Cabinet, but also to get some feedback from them. One of the top priorities that I mentioned during the State of the Union was the need for us to promote small business. And I’m very pleased that we’ve got Karen Mills here, who has participated in our meetings before, but is now an official member of the Cabinet. It is a symbol of how important it is for us to spur entrepreneurship, to help startups, to move aggressively so that we can assure more companies that create the most jobs in our economy are getting a leg up from the various programs that we have in our government. I mentioned at the State of the Union that there have been discussions, bipartisan discussions between Republicans and Democrats, about a whole set of measures that can accelerate financing to startup companies; can provide tax breaks to startups and small businesses that are interested in either hiring more workers or increasing their wages; that looks at innovative ways for them to raise capital. And my expectation and hope is, is that they will get a bill together quickly, that they will pass it and get it on my desk. I will sign it right away, and I would like to see that bill signed this year. In addition, we’ve got all the Cabinet agencies, who are here represented. They are putting forward their own initiatives to enhance the ability of entrepreneurs to get up and running. So, for example, the Department of Homeland Security, my understanding is we’re going to be talking about how we can improve the visa process for those who are interested in investing in the United States and starting businesses here in the United States. I know that the Department of Commerce, Energy, and Education, as well as the SBA, are all launching complementary initiatives to support entrepreneurship as well. And so what we want to do is to make sure that every single agency, even as they’re tending to their energy initiatives or providing homeland security or transportation or defense, that we’re also thinking about how are we advancing the cause of giving small businesses and entrepreneurs opportunities to start creating the next Google or the next Apple or the next innovative company that’s going to create jobs and improve our economy. It’s that kind of all-hands-on-deck approach that is really going to make a difference. And we’re looking forward to hearing additional ideas from our business council and from those who are involved in startups that can help to promote this agenda. So thank you all for participating. I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas, and I will see you guys later. Q Will we get details on your housing plan tomorrow? THE PRESIDENT: -- I will talk to you then about it. I wouldn’t want to use up all my good stuff now. (Laughter.) Q Thank you, sir.

New found energy, new found purpose: that's what Not Without A Fight is all about. The first New Found Glory album to bear the Epitaph logo brims with fresh promise, showcasing a band comfortable in their own skin and eager to get back to basics and present it all to the world. Not Without A Fight is arguably the strongest addition to an impressive catalog with no less than three gold records and ... some of the most memorable songs of the past decade.
Album opener "Right Where We Left Off" is an instant reminder of the keen self-awareness that endeared New Found Glory to millions of fans worldwide in the first place. And naming their album Not Without A Fight? That's a nod to that other side of the group Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz called "the greatest pop-punk band in history," the side that is scrappy, that's from the do-it-yourself scene. The side of a band who probably never should have been lumped in with some of the more teeny-bop friendly fare they've often shared the rock radio and TRL charts with.
Lead single "Listen to Your Friends" flips the script by rocking a verse even catchier than its chorus; "I'll Never Love Again" boasts a killer singalong. "47" has a hooky scream that breaks new ground for the Florida-bred five-some while "Truck Stop Blues" summons the potent urgency of the burgeoning scene that New Found Glory arose from, recalling a bygone era when they shared small stages with their friends in Get Up Kids, Piebald and Saves The Day.
Not Without A Fight packs together the best elements of fan favorite albums like Sticks and Stones (2002) and Catalyst (2004) with a reinvigorated drive making for a declaration that's fresh and timely. There's pop, there's punk, there's crunch, there's those irrepressible melodies and Jordan Pundik's instantly recognizable voice is in fine form.
"Nobody in New Found Glory loves anything as much as this band," says guitarist Chad Gilbert, by way of explanation as to how they have managed to maintain the same lineup - Pundik, Gilbert, Steven Klein (guitar), Ian Grushka (bass) and Cyrus Bolooki (drums) - for over ten years. "You fight with your mom. You don't hang out with her all the time. But you love her! You're never going to hate her. We're family. It might sound cliche, but that's what it is."
That family first came together in Coral Springs, Florida in 1997. Nothing Gold Can Stay (1999) and New Found Glory (2000) became classics thanks to hard-touring and good natured relationship building the world over, which ensured the next two albums (Sticks and Stones and Catalyst) would both debut in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.
As happens all too often, the uber-successful and beloved band found themselves delivering Coming Home to a group of relative strangers who lacked the same investment in them as before. By 2006, many of the folks who worked with the band at the label had been replaced by new faces, from the president on down. "At major labels, people are always losing their jobs," Gilbert points out. "Someone can love your band one week and the next week that person is fired."
With their recording contract fulfilled and in between management, New Found Glory seized the opportunity to have some fun while weighing their options, releasing From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II (something their most ardent supporters had demanded for years) and a split EP with their alter-ego, International Superheroes Of Hardcore.
"It brought this different attention to our band that we hadn't had in a while," Gilbert says. "Through the major label years, some of those lines got blurred because of some of the things the label did representing our band. With the release on Bridge 9 Records, we were able to do things how we wanted to do them. It was awesome."
In the midst of all of this, the band continued to write their next album, which they ultimately decided to record before choosing a new label. That's where +44 / Blink 182's Mark Hoppus came in, agreeing to produce Not Without A Fight at the studio he co-owns with Travis Barker. "He's an old friend of ours," Gilbert explains. "We had no money to make the record so we wanted someone with the confidence to do the album for free and get reimbursed later."
Eventually, of course, the label situation needed sorted out, as the guys in New Found Glory have no desire to be in any kind of "business" other than than business of writing great songs, recording them and playing them live. "When we announced that we were no longer signed to Geffen two years ago, Brett Gurewitz was the first one to call me," Gilbert remembers. "'People at Epitaph are all music fans and have their shit together."
And as for that spectacular accolade from the man running their new record label home? "It's crazy!" Chad says, laughing. "The Descendents could take that crown way before we could, or Screeching Weasel, or Green Day. I don't know why he said that! He's crazy. It's flattering. It's really flattering. But I don't know what to say!"
New Found Glory's first Epitaph album has no guest appearances, no frills, nothing but fantastic songs and powerful performances. "If you really listen to our music, you can't pigeonhole it. We play music that we love." Not Without A Fight is alternately the band's most streamlined and direct but powerful and broad album thus far.

What Herman Cain Isn't Going To Tell You About Chile's Privatized Pensions
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 15:00:44 09/10/11
My chiropractor is a nice guy - a Republican, but open-minded. But because he's so busy, he doesn't know that much about what's going on (like the majority of Americans). I think he's fairly representative of the interested but under-informed voter.
Anyway, he asked me if I'd seen the Republican presidential debate; he wanted to know what I thought. "If I were a Republican? The only one I'd consider voting for is Huntsman," I said. "But of course you have to be a nut to win the Republican primaries."
"I thought Herman Cain seemed pretty smart. He was talking about making Social Security like the Chilean model," he said. "What do you know about that?"
"Oh, jeebus," I said. "The Chilean model. The same one that right-wingers have been trying to shove down our throats for 30 years ." (This was all mumbled, since I was face down on his table at the time.)
"First of all, it was a mess. It was imposed by Pinochet under his military dictatorship, and the generals revolted. They insisted they get to keep the old plan, and they did. Second, a lot of people didn't get anywhere near the money they actually needed to retire , but the administrators made a fortune."
I didn't even get into the meat of it. Chileans were charged exorbitant fees (15 to 20 percent for all costs) in order to choose which pension fund association in which to invest. Depending on which risk level they choose, they're equivalent to our mutual funds, IRAs or CDs; by law, they have to have a minimum return. From Contingencies, the magazine of the American Academy of Actuaries, March/April 1998: >
There are currently 13 privately run AFP's authorized to manage a private pension fund covering a group of workers. The original 12 in 1981 grew to 22 in 1993, but competition caused this to fall to 13. Investments now totaling around $30 billion are regulated by law, and about 28 percent is currently invested in equities, 42 percent in government bonds, 30 percent in Chilean financial institutions and companies, and a small amount in foreign securities.
So it's not like you get to watch CNBC all day and make a killing in the stock market -- you're limited to the official funds, and they all have roughly the same investments. And it's a much better deal for someone with a big paycheck. (IIRC, a big shortfall was caused by the fact that women, especially poor women, dropped out of the job market to raise children or take care of a sick relative. So when it came time to retire, they had very little money from which to draw. They since added a minimum benefit -- gee, sounds almost like their original Social Security program!)
The article goes on to warn about the private plans being pushed by Republicans at the time: >
In the event of a stock calamity in the fashion of 1929, the privatization groups tell us that the government, not they, will assume the responsibility of payments to retirees of specified minimum amounts. This will, of course, require that federal borrowing be repaid by the public. In addition, the purchasing power of retirees will be cut at a bad time for the economy. Workers in desperate need because of lost jobs or pay cuts cannot be expected to take kindly to a sharp reduction in their nest eggs and will likely make demands on the government for restitution.
Opportunities for fraud: The financial media have stories practically every day about scams being perpetrated on even highly sophisticated investors. Will the scamming of workers and their beneficiaries become a major growth industry? The lesson from Chile may well be summed up in two words: Caveat emptor.
The big hero of the latest right-wing push is Jose Piñera, former secretary of labor and social security and the architect of this pension plan. Would you be surprised to hear that he now draws wingnut welfare as a senior fellow at the Cato Institute? Of course not. Piñera founded "The International Center for Pension Reform" in order to promote the Chilean model everywhere else. I occasionally see him on my teevee. What I don't usually hear him acknowledge is that in 2008, the Chilean plan started moving back toward more government oversight and control.
But you won't hear many Bobbleheads talking about that. It might ruin the free market fairy tale.

The Engadget Show - 023: We tour a headphone factory, talk record labels, and look at They Might Be Giants' favorite gadgets
[LESS INFO] 104 VIEWS | ADDED 17:00:00 07/28/11
The Engadget Show is back, and this time we're in full-on rock star mode. We kick things off with a trip to the Engadget Laboratories, where Brian and Terrence test out some sub-$100 headphones on a quartet of guinea pigs. Do you really get what you pay for when you buy a pair of earbuds from your local Big Box retailer?
Things get a bit ritzier when Darren tours Westone's laboratories in Colorado to find out how a pair of $950 in-ear headphones are made. Hint: it involves squirting silicone into our managing editor's ears and a whole lot of sanding.
Next up, we stop by the reviews table, where Tim and Brian take a look at this month's most exciting gadgets, including the new MacBook Air , Sony Vaio Z , Toshiba Thrive , and Droid 3 .
John Flansburgh and John Linnell of They Might Be Giants pay a visit to Engadget headquarters to show off some of their favorite lo-fi musical gadgets, including the Stylophone and a circuit-bent Speak and Spell. Also, if you've ever wondered what the long reigning kings of underground geek rock would sound like given the T-Pain treatment, this is a segment you're not gonna want to miss.
Universal Republic Records' VP Digital Colleen Quill also stops by to discuss the role of the major label in the world of Twitter, iTunes, Spotify, and the like. And we wrap things up with a performance by New York City's own Cookies .
The video stream of the show is above, and you can also download us in HD below. Oh, and if you're still waiting for some Spotify invites, don't worry -- we've got you covered .

The Engadget Show - 022: Gadgets get smashed, Rick Karr talks broadband, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block tell us what moved them
[LESS INFO] 105 VIEWS | ADDED 20:19:00 06/28/11
The Engadget Show is back! Last time it was gaming, this time we go for something with a bit more variety. The show starts with Tim and Brian taking a quick look over some of the month's biggest gadgets, like the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 , the HTC EVO 3D , and a pair of new readers: the Barnes & Noble Nook WiFi and the Kobo eReader Touch Edition .
After that it's sledgehammer time, where Brian and Terrence work through some pent-up frustrations by beating the silicon out of a series of durable gadgets, all captured in delicious slow motion. Some survived, some did not. Then, we all learn a lesson as Rick Karr stops by to talk about the (sorry) state of US broadband compared to the rest of the world.
Next, we take it to the streets to ask you what your most important gadgets are before being joined in the studio by the Engadget founder Peter Rojas and Editor Emeritus Ryan Block, the duo behind gdgt, to talk about the gadgets that most affected them in their time at the site and beyond, also taking some questions from eager audience members about, well, gadgety things. Finally, we all get carried deep into the aural environment of Chrome Canyon.
It's a tech-heavy, action-packed show this week that you won't want to miss. So what are you waiting for? Watch it now! The video stream is above, or download the show in HD below!

It's another episode of The Engadget Show, in which we keep on keepin' on and give you a taste of what's to come next week. That's when the Electronics Entertainment Expo happens, and we just couldn't keep from going all gaming for this month's episode. It all starts when Tim and Brian take a look over some of the month's biggest gadgets, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the iCade .
Then, we take a trip down to Babycastles, the indie arcade where the gamers make the games -- and the cabinets. After that, Joystiq's Chris Grant and Justin McElroy join us on the stage to dish up just what's coming next from Sony. NGP? Wii HD? Project Cafe? Intrigue.
It's a gaming-heavy, genre-busting show this week that you won't want to miss. So what are you waiting for? Watch it now! The video stream is above, or download the show in HD below!

Can We Move On From Kirstie Alley
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 16:24:36 05/31/11
America it is time to stop with our obsession of celebrities that don’t deserve it, like Kirstie Alley . Do people still have such fond memories of Cheers that we can’t let go of Kirstie? Check out her wikipedia page, she has had a very small career, so how does she keep invading all aspects of pop culture. Please just let her out to pasture with the rest of the cows.
I don’t know why, but I can’t get my fat dome around Kim Kardashian ’s recent engagement to New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries . More so over the ring. The ring has a diamond that is over 20 carats in size and cost an estimated $2 million. This is an NBA player that you never heard about to this year, and you know how much he has made in his seven year career, $14 million. This is a guy who has pretty much done diddly-poo for his whole NBA career, and made that much money. Do you know where he got a diamond that size? Well he shoved an oyster up Kim’s ass after the immense squeezing and pressure, viola. I know that’s how pearls are made, but I needed to get a big ass joke in their somehow.
ICBW fact of the day. I did not watch one second of American Idol this season. Not a recap on the internet, not a highlight on TV. Thank You.

Supermodel Adrianne Curry and former Brady Bunch actor Christopher Knight have separated. Most of you probably got sick of this couple a few years ago when they wouldn’t just go away doing reality shows like the Surreal Life and My Fair Brady . What should be important to you is the fact that Adrianne Curry has one of the hottest twitter accounts because she posts some of the sexiest pictures on the internet and they can only get better now that she is a single lady.

"Thanks so much Psyclops! Check them out at PsyclopsHQ.com This case retails for 19.99, and it's a silicone case. There are four different colors/characters. Yellow, Blue, Red, and Purple. It covers the chrome all around on the front, and protects your Lock, and Volume Rocker Buttons. The USB, and Headphone jack port is fully exposed. (of course), and there are no problems with that. It sort of cover the home button on the bottom, but it's not a problem, the top does sort of have a flap, so that concerns me, but it's alright. It has a great feel in the hand adding no bulk! Again it is: PsyclopsHQ.com Thanks so much Psyclops for sending this out! and Thanks to you guys watching my videos! Subscribe, Rate and comment!"
