Convicted Criminal James O'Keefe Dupes Right Wing Media Again!
[LESS INFO] 22 VIEWS | ADDED 16:00:18 05/17/12
You'd think the wingers would figure out that James O'Keefe makes them look like fools every time he posts another one of his "videos." You'd think they might consider not pimping those videos like they're real when they're so easy to debunk. You'd think.
This time, it's North Carolina under fire , but O'Keefe ridiculously claims voter fraud when the only fraud is O'Keefe and his bogus claims. This time around, O'Keefe features a "dead voter" and a voter who he claims is illegally registered to vote because he was not a citizen at the time he was called for jury duty. Unfortunately for O'Keefe, he became a citizen in the 80s, a fact that was easily verifiable before publishing the video.
As for O'Keefe's dead guy, it turns out James forgot that "Jr." at the end of a guy's name means he's the son of the dead guy and also happens to be a very much alive registered voter.
Via Media Matters : >
Yes, as multiple obituaries for Bolton note, he was survived by, among others, his son Michael Gordon Bolton, Jr. Public records searches using the Nexis database confirm that Bolton Jr. was registered to vote at the same address given to the poll worker by the O'Keefe operative.
This isn't the only error of this sort O'Keefe made. As ThinkProgress noted , the "non-citizen" voter supposedly exposed by the video is actually a naturalized citizen.
The best screw-up of all is the one where O'Keefe punks the Daily Caller , Breitbart.com and Michelle Malkin . I love it when one of their own hangs them out to dry so thoroughly. In the opener of his ten-minute long video, O'Keefe's minions are walking up a driveway to "prove" that a non-citizen has voted in the North Carolina primary.
Via ThinkProgress Justice : >
Now, it turns out that the second “non-citizen,” William Romero, is actually a citizen as well, according to his family.
The video opens with O’Keefe’s cameraman walking up Romero’s driveway and confronting a member of his family about whether he is a citizen. O’Keefe points to court records from 2010 where Romero was excused from jury duty because he was not a citizen at the time. Therefore, as O’Keefe argues, Romero’s voter registration dated December 5, 2011 is fraudulent because Romero “is not a United States citizen.”
Oops! That calendar can be a pesky thing. It turns out Romero became a citizen in early 2011, and registered to vote because that's what good citizens in this country do: they vote. >
In fact, Romero’s family told ThinkProgress he became a naturalized citizen in early 2011.
What’s more, Romero’s family told ThinkProgress that they had began receiving harassing telephone calls two weeks before the incident in the video asking if Romero was a citizen. They confirmed to the caller — it’s unclear whether they were speaking with O’Keefe himself or another individual — that Romero is indeed a citizen. Nevertheless, O’Keefe proceeded to ambush the family at their home and publish this video claiming he’s not a citizen.
Never mind the fact that what O'Keefe is trying to do will prove nothing other than that some insane dude with a video camera is trying to commit voter fraud. Never mind that what O'Keefe actually accomplishes is an embarrassing display of dishonesty and fraudent behavior himself. The right wing blogs continue to treat him like something legitimate despite the fact that he is show to be a blatant psychopathic liar over and over and over again.
O'Keefe has already plea-bargained his chicanery in New Orleans down from a felony to a misdemeanor , but he is still a criminal, and nothing he says, does, publishes or tries should be considered legitimate. But that won't stop the wingers from amplifying his nonsense simply because it fits the narrative they want to push. Just so long as we all understand that this isn't journalism, and it's not really the kind of things taxpayers should have to fund via a tax-exempt organization.
As long as we're at it, let's hold the wingers accountable for repeating O'Keefe's lies with no correction. Malkin and Breitbart are sticking to their now-debunked claims. The Daily Caller has issued a small correction to their original article, but all three should be fully retracting theirs, and O'Keefe's, claims. The fraud here is James O'Keefe, not the innocent voters he tried to frame.

New RE6 Release Date and SFxT Cross Platform Play - Press Pause Daily
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 00:29:05 04/12/12
Resident Evil 6 gets a new trailer and release date and Street Fighter X Tekken gets cross platform play.
SHOW NOTES:
Story 1:
Capcom held its Captivate event earlier this week and treated gamers to a brand new Resident Evil 6 trailer, and also announced a new release date.
The game’s release has been moved up almost a month from its original release date of November 20th to a new date of October 2nd.
The reception to the first trailer back in January led Capcom to want to get the game into player hands as soon as possible.
The game will feature a globe trotting adventure with series favorites Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy.
The new trailer also revealed a new character Jake Muller, who is the son of series villain Albert Wesker, and a very grown up Resident Evil 2 character Sherry Birkin.
Another story came out this week about the Premium Edition of the game that will release in Japan. It will run about $1300 and will feature:
A special edition of the game for PS3, or Xbox 360
Four iPhone cases for Chris, Leon, Jack, and one mystery character.
A leather jacket modeled after the one worn by Leon in sizes ranging from small to Extra *Large.
This is pretty good news for RE fans, especially those with large wallets. I will just have to make do with just the game, but that leather jacket sounds dope.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/resident-evil-6-1000-premium-edition-up-for-order-on-capcoms-e-store-6371143
Story 2:
In other Capcom news, they announced this week that gamers who buy the PS Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken will be able to play online against players who are using the PS3 edition of the game.
They will be able to play against anyone via WiFi or 3G anywhere in the world.
Other PS Vita features include touch controls and local and WiFI multiplayer.
Also, added characters in the Vita game will be unlocked in the PS3 version as well.
This is a pretty cool idea, but I would caution Vita players wanting to go head to head against PS3 players. Those guys are probably using a fighting stick, so you might get your ass handed to you.

Nearly The News #112
NORTH KOREA STILL BAT-SH*T CRAZY!
Theindytribune.com reports that the leadership of North Korea will soon begin military proceedings against another planet. Newly minted dictator Kim Jong-un has officially set his country’s sights upon “destroying the Sun by any means necessary” according to state media.
Analysts have theorized that either A) what we’re seeing here is basic prison mentality, where a newcomer, not wanting to be anybody’s bitch, walks straight up and picks a fight with the biggest guy in the yard. Or B) Kim Jong-un is simply nuts.
http://www.theindytribune.com/2011/12/kim-jong-un-declares-war-on-sun.html
SANTORUM: KINDERGARTEN IS GERMAN FOR SOMETHING BAD
GOP candidate Rick Santorum says not only are colleges liberal indoctrination factories, but day cares promote socialism and grade schools are nothing more than houses of devil worship where holy scripture is used as toilet paper.
Santorum was apparently doubling down on his criticism of President Obama’s goal of allowing everyone who wants to go to college an opportunity to do so.
“It’s all about sharing in daycares,” said Santorum to Tea Party gathering recently. “And sharing is socialism.” He did not elaborate on his grade school charges, but clearly, Santorum’s early education was far more interesting than ours was.
And finally…
NASCAR: GONNA NEED BIGGER STOCK CARS
According to a new report by the American Institute For Advertising And Marketing, every product known to exist is now an official sponsor of NASCAR.
"What you have is an advertisement being driven past a captive audience over and over again for hours at a time” Cap News quotes a NASCAR official as saying. “It was only a matter of time before our cars were completely covered over.”
Drivers are said to be concerned about ads on the windshields, but NASCAR says it’s a small price to pay to promote Windex and a brand of Lithuanian rectal wipes to all their fans.

He went on explaining that he and Cumberbatch were on a small part of the set when someone took the picture. He said, "That happens, I guess. We're on incredibly big set pieces in the middle of somewhere and people sort of got wind of it." New found energy, new found purpose: that's what Not Without A Fight is all about. The first New Found Glory album to bear the Epitaph logo brims with fresh promise, showcasing a band comfortable in their own skin and eager to get back to basics and present it all to the world. Not Without A Fight is arguably the strongest addition to an impressive catalog with no less than three gold records and ... some of the most memorable songs of the past decade.
Album opener "Right Where We Left Off" is an instant reminder of the keen self-awareness that endeared New Found Glory to millions of fans worldwide in the first place. And naming their album Not Without A Fight? That's a nod to that other side of the group Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz called "the greatest pop-punk band in history," the side that is scrappy, that's from the do-it-yourself scene. The side of a band who probably never should have been lumped in with some of the more teeny-bop friendly fare they've often shared the rock radio and TRL charts with.
Lead single "Listen to Your Friends" flips the script by rocking a verse even catchier than its chorus; "I'll Never Love Again" boasts a killer singalong. "47" has a hooky scream that breaks new ground for the Florida-bred five-some while "Truck Stop Blues" summons the potent urgency of the burgeoning scene that New Found Glory arose from, recalling a bygone era when they shared small stages with their friends in Get Up Kids, Piebald and Saves The Day.
Not Without A Fight packs together the best elements of fan favorite albums like Sticks and Stones (2002) and Catalyst (2004) with a reinvigorated drive making for a declaration that's fresh and timely. There's pop, there's punk, there's crunch, there's those irrepressible melodies and Jordan Pundik's instantly recognizable voice is in fine form.
"Nobody in New Found Glory loves anything as much as this band," says guitarist Chad Gilbert, by way of explanation as to how they have managed to maintain the same lineup - Pundik, Gilbert, Steven Klein (guitar), Ian Grushka (bass) and Cyrus Bolooki (drums) - for over ten years. "You fight with your mom. You don't hang out with her all the time. But you love her! You're never going to hate her. We're family. It might sound cliche, but that's what it is."
That family first came together in Coral Springs, Florida in 1997. Nothing Gold Can Stay (1999) and New Found Glory (2000) became classics thanks to hard-touring and good natured relationship building the world over, which ensured the next two albums (Sticks and Stones and Catalyst) would both debut in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 chart.
As happens all too often, the uber-successful and beloved band found themselves delivering Coming Home to a group of relative strangers who lacked the same investment in them as before. By 2006, many of the folks who worked with the band at the label had been replaced by new faces, from the president on down. "At major labels, people are always losing their jobs," Gilbert points out. "Someone can love your band one week and the next week that person is fired."
With their recording contract fulfilled and in between management, New Found Glory seized the opportunity to have some fun while weighing their options, releasing From the Screen to Your Stereo Part II (something their most ardent supporters had demanded for years) and a split EP with their alter-ego, International Superheroes Of Hardcore.
"It brought this different attention to our band that we hadn't had in a while," Gilbert says. "Through the major label years, some of those lines got blurred because of some of the things the label did representing our band. With the release on Bridge 9 Records, we were able to do things how we wanted to do them. It was awesome."
In the midst of all of this, the band continued to write their next album, which they ultimately decided to record before choosing a new label. That's where +44 / Blink 182's Mark Hoppus came in, agreeing to produce Not Without A Fight at the studio he co-owns with Travis Barker. "He's an old friend of ours," Gilbert explains. "We had no money to make the record so we wanted someone with the confidence to do the album for free and get reimbursed later."
Eventually, of course, the label situation needed sorted out, as the guys in New Found Glory have no desire to be in any kind of "business" other than than business of writing great songs, recording them and playing them live. "When we announced that we were no longer signed to Geffen two years ago, Brett Gurewitz was the first one to call me," Gilbert remembers. "'People at Epitaph are all music fans and have their shit together."
And as for that spectacular accolade from the man running their new record label home? "It's crazy!" Chad says, laughing. "The Descendents could take that crown way before we could, or Screeching Weasel, or Green Day. I don't know why he said that! He's crazy. It's flattering. It's really flattering. But I don't know what to say!"
New Found Glory's first Epitaph album has no guest appearances, no frills, nothing but fantastic songs and powerful performances. "If you really listen to our music, you can't pigeonhole it. We play music that we love." Not Without A Fight is alternately the band's most streamlined and direct but powerful and broad album thus far.

New Found Glory - Live In Studio B
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 09:17:37 12/29/11
New Found Glory performs live at Mevio Studios in San Francisco
New found energy, new found purpose: that's what Not Without A Fight is all about.

Pliny the Elder - Beer Review
BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE: www.betterbeerauthority.com If you've been paying attention to the craft beer scene, then you've probably heard of Pliny the Elder. Beer nerds go crazy for this beer. Have you had the privilege of tasting it? Depending on where you live, it can be pretty hard to track down. Let me tell you, it's an imperial IPA worth looking for. But, do the other guys on the show agree with me? Tune in and find out whether the boys love it or hate it. Partial Transcript: "On Tap -- Pliny the Elder Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are tasting Pliny the Elder from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California. The brewery was founded in 1997 and specializes in aggressively hopped California style ales, Belgian style ales and barrel aged beers. The brewery is currently running at capacity and has no plans to expand. So those hard-to-find Russian River Brews are going to stay hard to find. Their website says "small is better. Pliny the Elder -- the beer - is a Double IPA with 8 percent alcohol by volume and 100 IBUs. Beer nerds go crazy for this beer and it won a Gold Medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beerfest. Pliny the Elder -- the human -- was a Roman Scholar and naturalist who had a role in creating the original botanical name for hops." What Herman Cain Isn't Going To Tell You About Chile's Privatized Pensions
[LESS INFO] 10 VIEWS | ADDED 15:00:44 09/10/11
My chiropractor is a nice guy - a Republican, but open-minded. But because he's so busy, he doesn't know that much about what's going on (like the majority of Americans). I think he's fairly representative of the interested but under-informed voter.
Anyway, he asked me if I'd seen the Republican presidential debate; he wanted to know what I thought. "If I were a Republican? The only one I'd consider voting for is Huntsman," I said. "But of course you have to be a nut to win the Republican primaries."
"I thought Herman Cain seemed pretty smart. He was talking about making Social Security like the Chilean model," he said. "What do you know about that?"
"Oh, jeebus," I said. "The Chilean model. The same one that right-wingers have been trying to shove down our throats for 30 years ." (This was all mumbled, since I was face down on his table at the time.)
"First of all, it was a mess. It was imposed by Pinochet under his military dictatorship, and the generals revolted. They insisted they get to keep the old plan, and they did. Second, a lot of people didn't get anywhere near the money they actually needed to retire , but the administrators made a fortune."
I didn't even get into the meat of it. Chileans were charged exorbitant fees (15 to 20 percent for all costs) in order to choose which pension fund association in which to invest. Depending on which risk level they choose, they're equivalent to our mutual funds, IRAs or CDs; by law, they have to have a minimum return. From Contingencies, the magazine of the American Academy of Actuaries, March/April 1998: >
There are currently 13 privately run AFP's authorized to manage a private pension fund covering a group of workers. The original 12 in 1981 grew to 22 in 1993, but competition caused this to fall to 13. Investments now totaling around $30 billion are regulated by law, and about 28 percent is currently invested in equities, 42 percent in government bonds, 30 percent in Chilean financial institutions and companies, and a small amount in foreign securities.
So it's not like you get to watch CNBC all day and make a killing in the stock market -- you're limited to the official funds, and they all have roughly the same investments. And it's a much better deal for someone with a big paycheck. (IIRC, a big shortfall was caused by the fact that women, especially poor women, dropped out of the job market to raise children or take care of a sick relative. So when it came time to retire, they had very little money from which to draw. They since added a minimum benefit -- gee, sounds almost like their original Social Security program!)
The article goes on to warn about the private plans being pushed by Republicans at the time: >
In the event of a stock calamity in the fashion of 1929, the privatization groups tell us that the government, not they, will assume the responsibility of payments to retirees of specified minimum amounts. This will, of course, require that federal borrowing be repaid by the public. In addition, the purchasing power of retirees will be cut at a bad time for the economy. Workers in desperate need because of lost jobs or pay cuts cannot be expected to take kindly to a sharp reduction in their nest eggs and will likely make demands on the government for restitution.
Opportunities for fraud: The financial media have stories practically every day about scams being perpetrated on even highly sophisticated investors. Will the scamming of workers and their beneficiaries become a major growth industry? The lesson from Chile may well be summed up in two words: Caveat emptor.
The big hero of the latest right-wing push is Jose Piñera, former secretary of labor and social security and the architect of this pension plan. Would you be surprised to hear that he now draws wingnut welfare as a senior fellow at the Cato Institute? Of course not. Piñera founded "The International Center for Pension Reform" in order to promote the Chilean model everywhere else. I occasionally see him on my teevee. What I don't usually hear him acknowledge is that in 2008, the Chilean plan started moving back toward more government oversight and control.
But you won't hear many Bobbleheads talking about that. It might ruin the free market fairy tale.

The Engadget Show - 023: We tour a headphone factory, talk record labels, and look at They Might Be Giants' favorite gadgets
[LESS INFO] 110 VIEWS | ADDED 17:00:00 07/28/11
The Engadget Show is back, and this time we're in full-on rock star mode. We kick things off with a trip to the Engadget Laboratories, where Brian and Terrence test out some sub-$100 headphones on a quartet of guinea pigs. Do you really get what you pay for when you buy a pair of earbuds from your local Big Box retailer?
Things get a bit ritzier when Darren tours Westone's laboratories in Colorado to find out how a pair of $950 in-ear headphones are made. Hint: it involves squirting silicone into our managing editor's ears and a whole lot of sanding.
Next up, we stop by the reviews table, where Tim and Brian take a look at this month's most exciting gadgets, including the new MacBook Air , Sony Vaio Z , Toshiba Thrive , and Droid 3 .
John Flansburgh and John Linnell of They Might Be Giants pay a visit to Engadget headquarters to show off some of their favorite lo-fi musical gadgets, including the Stylophone and a circuit-bent Speak and Spell. Also, if you've ever wondered what the long reigning kings of underground geek rock would sound like given the T-Pain treatment, this is a segment you're not gonna want to miss.
Universal Republic Records' VP Digital Colleen Quill also stops by to discuss the role of the major label in the world of Twitter, iTunes, Spotify, and the like. And we wrap things up with a performance by New York City's own Cookies .
The video stream of the show is above, and you can also download us in HD below. Oh, and if you're still waiting for some Spotify invites, don't worry -- we've got you covered .

The Engadget Show - 022: Gadgets get smashed, Rick Karr talks broadband, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block tell us what moved them
[LESS INFO] 107 VIEWS | ADDED 20:19:00 06/28/11
The Engadget Show is back! Last time it was gaming, this time we go for something with a bit more variety. The show starts with Tim and Brian taking a quick look over some of the month's biggest gadgets, like the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 , the HTC EVO 3D , and a pair of new readers: the Barnes & Noble Nook WiFi and the Kobo eReader Touch Edition .
After that it's sledgehammer time, where Brian and Terrence work through some pent-up frustrations by beating the silicon out of a series of durable gadgets, all captured in delicious slow motion. Some survived, some did not. Then, we all learn a lesson as Rick Karr stops by to talk about the (sorry) state of US broadband compared to the rest of the world.
Next, we take it to the streets to ask you what your most important gadgets are before being joined in the studio by the Engadget founder Peter Rojas and Editor Emeritus Ryan Block, the duo behind gdgt, to talk about the gadgets that most affected them in their time at the site and beyond, also taking some questions from eager audience members about, well, gadgety things. Finally, we all get carried deep into the aural environment of Chrome Canyon.
It's a tech-heavy, action-packed show this week that you won't want to miss. So what are you waiting for? Watch it now! The video stream is above, or download the show in HD below!
