The Sandusky Court Appearance: Attorney's 800-Quip Backfires...Badly
[LESS INFO] 5 VIEWS | ADDED 15:00:05 12/14/11
This is a video of a press conference Jerry Sandusky's attorney Joseph Amendola held after an abbreviated court appearance Tuesday where Sandusky waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Waving the preliminary hearing was a media savvy move on the part of Sandusky and his lawyer, because it means the prosecution's case will not be heard ahead of the actual trial, nor will witnesses have to testify ahead of trial.
However, Amendola went one step too far in his press conference afterwards. When questioned about Mike McQueary's testimony and how they planned to attack his credibility, Amendola went through about a two minute description of what one would have to believe in order to believe McQueary. Right at the end, he says this: >
If anyone is naive enough to think for one minute that Tim Curley, Joe Paterno, Gary Schultz and for that matter Graham Spanier, University President, were told by Mike McQueary, that he observed Jerry Sandusky having anal sex with a 10-year old looking kid in a shower room at Penn State or Penn State property and their response was simply to tell Jerry Sandusky that "don't go in the shower any more with kids," I suggest you dial 1-800-REALITY .
Well, someone at Deadspin.com did just that, and discovered that it's a real 800 number for a gay phone sex line. Deadspin has the audio of the intro to prove it. Yes, for 99 cents per minute, you too can "join the fun."
You seriously cannot make this stuff up. I'm sure Amendola thought he was being snarky, but next time he might want to leave off the 800 number reference.
Amendola made it clear during his press conference after the abbreviated court appearance that Sandusky will go after the credibility of each and every victim along with McQueary. They fully intend to challenge the veracity of Mike McQueary's testimony, which the Grand Jury said they found very credible, as well as the eight victims' credibility. I'm sure this is why the attorney for Victim #1 spoke out after the hearing and said he hoped for an acceptable plea bargain. Even with eight victims whose stories touch one another's in different ways, there will be a concerted effort in public and behind closed doors to intimidate, challenge and otherwise discourage each of them from testifying.
As I was searching for this brief clip from today's press conference, I combed through CNN and ESPN transcripts and videos from earlier today. Poor corporate media. They were simply bristling with anticipation, and so disappointed afterward. I particularly enjoyed this bit of angst by reporters who clearly ought to know better: >
PAUL CALLAN, CNN LEGAL CONTRIBUTOR: You're going to see most of the victims tell their story. They'll be subjected to cross- examination. It's a limited cross. They can't be attacked about, for instance, their credibility whether they have criminal convictions and things like that. But they will be questioned about their story and whether the story is true or not. so I think we'll get a good picture of what is actually involved in this case today.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
ROMANS: Or not, because Jerry Sandusky, we are just learning, waived his right in court to a preliminary hearing.
VELSHI: Which means that this hearing that will take place will not happen. He will go straight to trial. We don't know what "straight to trial" means, because this could take --
COSTELLO: Which many analysts say it is a smart move, because you don't want to lay out your case in court. And is it necessary to hear from these six to eight victims to testify in open court with reporters all over the world. Probably, maybe, Paul Callan would know better than I.
VELSHI: According to the people that are there, the judge did ask Sandusky in doing so, does he understand that he's waiving certain rights. In Pennsylvania, ask you a right to this preliminary hearing. And as we discussed earlier, some chance, remote it might be, that the judge determined there wasn't enough to go to trial with.
COSTELLO: With six to eight witnesses.
ROMANS: With all of the prehearing analysis of what to expect today, what to expect today, I didn't hear anybody say you waive this right to this preliminary hearing, which may be another crazy like a fox move from his attorney to kind of --
COSTELLO: Or just a crazy move because a lot of people have accused his attorney.
I'm not sure whether these folks were around during the OJ trial, but anyone who paid even a little bit of attention to it knows there was almost no way Sandusky would have actually gone through with a preliminary hearing. Look at what releasing the Grand Jury presentment did to the case. It's one thing to claim a presumption of innocence and entirely another to expect human beings with human flaws to presume it, particularly when the media is blasting details from the hearing all over the airwaves. There was absolutely no way it was going to happen.
But I do love seeing their disappointed and shocked faces at the realization their sensational sex story might not be flogged every single day.

Circa Survive, Steel Train, Slayer, The Do, A Day To Remember, John Lydon (12.18.2010)
[LESS INFO] 51 VIEWS | ADDED 02:00:00 12/19/10
In our two featured artist segments this week, Jerry Bryant welcomes Steel Train and I host Circa Survive inside the historic JBTV studios.
Circa filmed this incredible afternoon session on our 9-cam, high def sound stage a few weeks back, before their sold-out Chicago show at House of Blues. I%rsquove always enjoyed their music, but somehow avoided crossing paths with them for an interview or general hangs until now. Based on accounts from our mutual friends in Madina Lake, I knew going in they%rsquod be good dudes. And after spending the day with them (topics of conversation included parenthood and inspiring performers), I can confirm that supporting Circa Survive is support well spent. During the performance, their singer Anthony Green asked our JBTV studio audience, %ldquoWho%rsquos coming to our show later tonight?%rdquo A handful of kids said they couldn%rsquot get tickets in time and they%rsquore now selling for a few hundred bucks a pop on StubHub. In one of the cooler moves I%rsquove ever seen an artist pull, Anthony took their names and added them to the band%rsquos guest list. So solid. As is their stripped down, JBTV exclusive set.
Also this week, JBTV cameras follow host Brendan Kelly backstage at UIC Pavilion for an exclusive interview with Slayer. The concept of an artist like Brendan (The Lawrence Arms) interviewing fellow artists like Slayer is endlessly fascinating to me, so I asked BK to walk me thru the atmosphere and his thought process before and during the interview. %ldquoI was pretty intimidated interviewing Dave and Kerry ,%rdquo he admits first and freely. %ldquoThey put us in a makeshift living room stocked with beer, soda and somebody%rsquos kid playing Xbox. We waited in there watching this incredibly bored and disenfranchised kid play some version of Mario Bros. for what seemed like hours before Kerry and Dave finally came in saying, %ldquoEh, another one of these [interviews], eh?%rdquo as though they were about to get yet another anal probe.%rdquo Hilarious insight. I still have a tough time figuring out why some artists have such a disdain for interviews. Maybe because I%rsquom the one always asking the questions?
Brendan continues, %ldquoI tried to be conversational and Dave was slightly receptive, but Kerry was clearly wanting to just get in and get out. His answers were super curt and, while he was pleasant enough, he%rsquos scary as hell. Big beard, flame head, in Slayer, etc. Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio) is really into Nazi mysticism and all that. Slayer has written a lot of songs that seem to imply a fascination with the third reich, so I tried to go there without being accusatory. The results were pretty entertaining.%rdquo
Host Jenna Martinelli sits down with New York City indie rockers, The Do, at Schubas%rsquo Harmony Grill for a candid look at the band during dinner. %ldquoOur conversation was really amusing and random,%rdquo Jenna told me. %ldquoA lot of talk about food and fashion.%rdquo Subject matter clearly close to Jenna%rsquos heart.
I head out to Hard Rock Hotel on Michigan Ave. for a visit with our friends from Ocala, Florida, A Day to Remember. This interview was particularly exciting %ndash moments before the shoot, the band had got word that their new album, What Separates Me from You, had unseated Taylor Swift for the number 1 spot on the iTunes music charts. No small feat. Celebratory drinks were had and Hard Rock memorabilia may or may not have been ripped off the walls. At least frontman Jeremy McKinnon stopped short of smashing any of it.
Finally this week, Jerry Bryant revisits one of his favorite classic JBTV segments featuring John Lydon a.k.a. The Sex Pistols%rsquo %ldquoJohnny Rotten.%rdquo I asked Jerry to recall some details from this legendary 1992 encounter. %ldquoJohn was on the PIL [Public Image, LTD.] tour at the time. He was doing an interview at 93 WXRT and decided he didn%rsquot like how it was going, so he walked out and showed up at JBTV 90 minutes early. I had no cameraman and no crew,%rdquo Jerry explains. %ldquoWe usually have someone tour the guest around the studio before ending up in the on-air studio. John refused the tour and said, %ldquoI%rsquom only answering ONE question on this crappy TV show.%rdquo So I took the camera, pointed it at John and he talked nonstop, for 40 minutes, about everything from bad music videos to showing his bare ass on TV.%rdquo

Star Wars LEGO Slave 1 Review

Star Wars LEGO Slave 1 Review is a post from Chris Pirillo

The Slave 1, as you know, is the vehicle that you will find Boba Fett riding around in. The LEGO version is well-made, easy to put together and comes with several cool little weapons.
I put my LEGO Star Wars Slave 1 together with a minimum of fuss and muss. There are three bags of LEGO bricks included and they’re numbered. As you follow the assembly instructions, you only need to open one of the bags at a time. You’re not faced with hundreds of little bricks from the onset of the build. That makes it nice for those of you who are anal about sorting your pieces prior to starting. You don’t have to!
The Slave 1 features an opening cockpit that rotates when the startship is rotated. It includes Han Solo, Boba Fett and Bossk minifigs. A Carbonite element holds Han Solo for transport, but you can pop him out easily whenever you wish. There is a secret compartment with a flick-firing missile repeater and side components with flick-firing missiles. You want to give these a light – yet firm – flick in order to make them fire properly.
If you’re an Adult Fan of LEGO, what is your favorite recent build? Do you build from kits, or do you freestyle it and come up with your own creations?

Exquisitely Anal Tai Chi
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 04:12:51 09/25/08
Tai Chi is a martial art that some people in the US may associate with senior citizens and early morning beach exercises. However, to some, Tai Chi is a collection of some of the deadliest moves in martial art-- moving with such slow deliberateness builds even more strength and ensures perfect form for when the time is necessary to lash out in full speed. Based on a remix aesthetic, "exquisitely anal tai-chi" is an exercise that uses Photoshop, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro to repurpose something and give it new meaning by putting it into a new context. It starts with a Photoshop collage that was completed as part of an "exquisite corpse" project. Then the piece turns into a remix of tai-chi defensive moves that are turned into sequences of play and dance. "exquisitely anal tai chi" is meant to focus on military bulldog-ism and how this aggression can sometimes blur into the realm of entertainment. Aggression is stretched to the extreme of absurdity, where the martial art becomes dance and extreme hostility is actually a denial of what one is/is fighting against. (An example may be the most vocal "macho" opponent of homosexuality who, in the end, is really just fighting his fear of seeing that side of himself). The original footage, a movie clip demonstrating using tai chi defensively, is from the website http://taiji.de/taiji/en.htm. The song is by Chris Clark and is entitled "Proper Lofi" from the "Clarence Park" album. The exquisite corpse was completed with Corey Menscher and Kim Thompson. This project is for the class "Frame by Frame" taught by Chris Kairalla, Fall 2008 at ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program) at NYU. * * * * * * * e. lytton
