Sen. Moran Speaks About Why Department of Labor Regulation Remains a Threat to Agriculture
Sen. Moran spoke on the Senate Floor on February 7, 2011 about the Department of Labor's annoucement that they are withdrawing the "parental exemption" portion of the rule impacting youth in agriculture. Despite this step in the right direction, more work remains because the entire regulation is a threat to the future of agriculture. As the process moves forward, Sen. Moran will continue to work on behalf of Kansans to make certain this destructive proposal does not move forward. From: SenatorJerryMoran Views: 10 0 ratings Time: 11:09 More in News & Politics

Fake Salt Being Sold in Anhui Province, China
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me And the latest in a series of food safety scandals in China, Anhui Province authorities have discovered fake edible salt made from the residue of agricultural chemicals. Three people are being held in connection with the case. Police in China's Anhui Province have warned that products made with fake edible salt extracted from agricultural chemicals may have made it onto the market. According to state-run China Daily, police in Anhui arrested three people in connection with the case. The three are suspected of manufacturing and selling 10-thousand tons of the salt. They set up business in 2009, purchasing waste residues from the factory of Zhenjiang Jiangnan Chemical Engineering Company. The factory was under the impression that they were using the residues to produce industrial salt. So far, no cases of illness have been reported in Anhui in connection with the salt. But Chinese citizens, disturbed by a string of food scandals over the last few years, see this latest case as a major problem. [Mr. Long, Resident]: "The slide in morality, the loss of sincerity in our society has already reached a very serious extent. I feel that it's a problem with the system that these illegal companies can be so bold and succeed for a period of time. Why can't our watchdog organizations and officials carry out their responsibilities? I fear this is a major problem." The three ... Greenpeace Publishes 2011 Ranking of China's Supermarkets

The global environmental watchdog%mdashGreenpeace%mdashhas released its rankings for China's supermarkets to help consumers avoid stores that sell unsafe food. The best-ranked place to shop is Carrefour, and the worst ranked is Tesco. Amid a series of food safety scandals in China, Greenpeace has released its 2011 ranking of China's supermarkets. The aim is to help consumers avoid supermarkets that continue to sell unsafe food. This comes after a recent Greenpeace survey shows that most local fresh produce at five supermarkets in China contains pesticides. Some are banned or exceed legal limits. Last November, Greenpeace randomly sampled 35 items of fruits and vegetables from five supermarkets in Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Thirty samples contain pesticides. Only 14 percent is pesticide-free. Greenpeace food and agriculture campaigner Wang Jing said, "With so many pesticides, it might seem impossible to find safe food." Wang said consumers' choice is the best deterrent: "If we choose not to buy unsafe food, then supermarkets won't sell them." According to Greenpeace, the best place to shop for pesticide-free food is Carrefour%mdashfollowed by Auchan and Shanghai City. The worst places are the Japanese Ito Yokado chain, Chengdu, and the British supermarket Tesco. Walmart is ranked 7th on the list. Five ranking criteria were used, including use of ... Jobs pain in Spain worsens
www.euronews.net Spain's jobless rate rose by 4.01 percent in January from December taking the total number of people filing for unemployment benefits to 4.6 million. That puts the rate at 22.9 percent of the workforce , the highest in the eurozone. The new government is set to announce major labor reforms next week with more flexible rules on hiring and firing. It was elected last November pledging to create jobs. Unemployment rose across the board, particularly in the services sector, but also including agriculture, industry and construction. Contaminated River Threatens Farmers’ Livelihoods The farmers of Karauli district, Rajasthan are distressed. The once clean water of the Bhadravati river which cuts through the district is now foaming with strange and unidentified effluents. The river banks are lined with sewage and chemical flotsam. As the river is the only source of water in the neighboring rural areas the farmers are forced to use it for their fields. The polluted water has made the fields less fertile and has greatly diminished the yields. IndiaUnheard Community Correspondent and Karauli resident Sunita Kasera is concerned: “Karauli is the biggest city in the district. It is growing fast without the neccessary infrastructure to manage the growing need for sanitation and waste disposal. There is no sewage plant in the whole area and the dirt just gets dumped directly into the river water.” The farmer she interviewed while making a video on the polluted river told Sunita that because of the dirty water their land now yields just 1 tonne of crop instead of the usual 4 tonnes. The contaminated water has deteriorated the fertile soil and affected the growth of the plants. The farmers report that the vegetables have become suseptible to disease. If they do not get infected with worms, they ripe too fast and rot away even quicker. The farmers fear for their livelihoods, health and income security. The effects of water pollution on cultivable land and its negative effects especially on local farmers are a known fact in India. All major rivers throughout the country are highly polluted. A majority of the pollution has its source in domestic households. In India, untreated sewage is a prime reason behind major environmental hazards and contagions. If it has to avoid a terrible fate, Karauli city desperately needs a proper sewage plant as soon as possible. Sunita Kasera feels strongly that the government needs to take on this issue fast to avoid any further damage to the rural population and the environment: “Our district has a wondeful rich landscape, which might be gone soon if we to not take measures today. I think, protecting the land and rivers can only be in the interest of all people to keep everyone in good health and protect our argriculture.”
