Oprah Visits South Africa School

She says the money and work involved in creating the school was worth the effort. Oprah Winfrey visited the Leadership Academy For Girls in South Africa on Thursday. The school cost Winfrey $40 million of her own money. It was set up in 2007 in Henley on Klip, a town just south of Johannesburg. She says all the money and work involved has been worth the effort. [Oprah Winfrey, American Talk Show Host]: "This has been harder than I ever imagined, it has cost more money than I ever imagined, 10 times more than I was told it would, 10 times more work than I was told it would, 10 times more commitment, 10 times more devotion and yet every single sacrifice has been worth it." The South African government has been criticized for neglecting public schools particularly in poor and rural areas where classrooms are often overcrowded and inadequately funded. High levels of classroom violence, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse exacerbate the poor standard of education. But Winfrey says her academy does not have those problems. [Oprah Winfrey, American Talk Show Host]: "What's been exciting about this school, and if you ask any teacher, and I was just talking to the head of the school about this, not one moment has to be spent on discipline, not one moment of our time ... 33 Rhino Horns Seized by Hong Kong Customs
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt In Hong Kong, customs officers seized over $2 million in ivory, as well as 33 rhino horns. The shipping container came from Cape Town, South Africa and is believed to have been en route to other nearby countries. Other than the horns, 758 ivory chopsticks and 127 ivory bracelets were also in the shipment. Rhinos are hunted for their rumored cure-all horns, despite the fact that horns are scientifically proven to have no medicinal value. Myths say that rhino horns can cure everything from fever to cancer. A seizure of 33 horns is a record high for Hong Kong customs who have only ever caught one or two horns being smuggled on an individual basis. Although no arrests were made, authorities will investigate the case. From: NTDTV Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:16 More in News & Politics

[Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States]: "We all may be laying the foundation for our children and our grand children, and just because we won't see it doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing it. You look at Mr. Nelson Mandela, and I'm sure at some point during his detention he could've thought... 'man, this is a bad idea, I don't know if this is working out that well', but he is 92, he will be 93 this year and in his lifetime just imagine, because he has been fortunate enough to live that long, he has seen the full, not the complete but the...huge impact of his legacy." South African police have arrested a second suspect in the recent honeymoon murder. Here's more.
South African police arrested a second suspect on Thursday in connection with the recent hijacking and murder of tourist Anni Dewani.
National police commissioner General Bheki Cele made the announcement to reporters in Guguletu township, where the carjacking took place.
[General Bheki Cele, National Police Commissioner]:
"We have recovered two cell phones, a bangle, as I have said, and a watch - things that at least they do link the suspects that we have. So we continue investigations."
The murder of Dewani has tainted South Africa's image and Cele reminded the public that many visitors had a very positive experience in the country during the World Cup earlier this year.
[General Bheki Cele, National Police Commissioner]:
"South Africa must be remembered that this is the last, this is the first major negative thing happened after the world has sang Hallelujah when South Africa - with the World Cup. It must be remembered that it's not as if you go to South Africa you will be buried. It's not so."
Anni Dewani was murdered after the car she and her husband Shrien were in was hijacked in Guguletu township, a high crime area about 12 miles from Cape Town's central city. She died of a single gunshot wound.
Police said two men armed with guns approached the couple's car and forced out the driver, before speeding off with the tourists inside.
The gunmen later released the husband, who flagged down a motorist and alerted the police.
The vehicle was recovered with the woman's body inside.

Sailing Channel Theater Promo Ep1
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 23:00:00 07/03/09
TheSailingChannel.TV's one-hour sailing series, Sailing Channel Theater , premiers on New York Public TV station WLIW21 this Sunday, July 5, at 1pm EDT. The series will run through Sept 6 with an option to renew and be presented to APT for national PBS distribution.
Located on Long Island, WLIW21 is the third most watched PBS station in the US and sister station to WNET13 . The station covers the largest sailing grounds in the United States encompassing New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut.
You can also view SCT Ep1 on-line at www.wliw.org/sailing and www.thesailingchannel.tv/sct .
In the premier episode, the first half-hour features extended excerpts from Lin and Larry Pardey's latest documentary, "Cruising Has NO LIMITS." Tory Salvia, President of The Sailing Channel and Host for Sailing Channel Theater, introduces the world renowned cruising couple. This remarkable film shows Lin and Larry skimming before caressing trade winds, savoring tropical landfalls, and evading stormy seas. But their stories of ocean voyaging are much richer than the typical image of the cruising life under sail. We join the documentary in the Indian Ocean as the Pardey's, on board their 29-foot, 9-inch engineless wooden cutter Taleisin, close in on the southern tip of Africa for the first of three incredible adventures. Once safely ashore, Lin and Larry plan and execute a seven month “Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget,” outfitting a 4X4 to reach remote corners of southern Africa. During their two-year stay, they cover more than 12,000 miles enjoying campfire evenings with Kalahari Bushmen and days of animal-watching at waterholes far from game reserves. Next the Pardey's set sail across the Atlantic to Brazil and some incredible island cruising south of Rio. During this second adventure, we see how two 14-year-old passengers lead them into a unique, eight-month-long island encounter with several Brazilian families who dream of their own off shore adventures. Finally, the Pardey's voyage north to Ireland’s music-filled shores where they enjoy a summer of history, classic sailing, Irish music, and new friendships. Cruising Has NO LIMITS is a treat for both seasoned sailors and those who just dream of visiting different cultures under sail. For the second half-hour, host Tory Salvia, introduces " Distant Shores ," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode one, we join the Shards aboard their Classic 37 sloop, "Two Step," as they explore the West Coast of Turkey. The Shards voyage north viewing ancient ruins and olive groves along the way. They take a Turkish bath in a natural hot spring "hamam" along the shore and visit a town on an inland lake. A trip to a barber becomes an enlightening experience when Paul discovers that Turkish barbers use flames as well as razors when he goes for a shave. You can purchase the two-volume DVD set of Distant Shores: Greek Islands & Turkey at thesailingchannel.TV/distant_shores .
