The Pauses - "Hands Up": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Despite amassing a following, scene status, and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando indie-rock band The Pauses release their debut album A Cautionary Tale after only about, oh, TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse is something about wanting do to things "properly." So they saved money through a successful Kickstarter campaign (a marvel since their fans' bank accounts have a perfectly inverse relationship with their obvious wealth in taste) and headed up to Baltimore to record their proper debut at Magpie Cage Studios with the legendary J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), even enlisting three-quarters of the dude's own band. His wife, too? Sure, why not. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Robbins, mastered by TJ Lipple (Aloha) and featuring guest appearances from members of Deleted Scenes, Office of Future Plans and Channels, A Cautionary Tale is an exercise in complexion and combination, a world where guitars are BFFs with synthesizers, horns, bells, and ukuleles. Simply put, The Pauses got mad range, often in the same song. Rooted in the dynamics and ethos of '90s indie rock, their sound is a balancing act between rock and electronics, airiness and heft, suppleness and angularity. An album that you can explore without losing your core. So, with appropriately twirly hand motion, we introduce The Pauses: Tierney Tough (vocals, Rhodes, bass) Jason Kupfer (ukulele, Rhodes, piano, guitar, footbells, electronics) Nathan Chase (percussion, drums) From: sxsw Views: 113 10 ratings Time: 02:40 More in Entertainment

Wheeler Brothers - "Home For The Holidays": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Formed in Austin, WHEELER BROTHERS have emerged as one of the most exciting bands breaking out of Texas. The five-piece act composed of Austin natives combines the gutsy indie vibe of the modern central Texas music scene with the longing strains of time-honored Texas folk. Brothers Nolan, Tyler and Patrick Wheeler met Danny Matthews at LSU where they spent their afternoons picking guitars and swapping stories in the bar rooms of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Once back in Austin, the group rounded out their sound with the addition of a lifelong friend, guitarist AJ Molyneaux. Each member brings his own musical direction and ideas to the group, and through precise vocal harmonies and a unique cast of instruments. Wheeler Brothers have created a sound that has put their name in the forefront of the Austin music scene. Wheeler Brothers' debut album "Portraits," released in late June of 2011, was met with rave reviews on a local and national level. The release was backed by Texas swing legend Ray Benson and his label Bismeaux Records. Support from Benson, as well as a commanding presence on college radio, helped pave the way for Wheeler Brothers to roll out their first national tour in the summer of 2011. While debuting on the festival scene, Wheeler Brothers have also gained recognition supporting national acts such as Bob Schneider and Drive by Truckers. Back home in Austin, Wheeler Brothers are constantly looking for venues to accommodate their growing fan base and ... From: sxsw Views: 26 0 ratings Time: 04:40 More in Music

Health Reform: Changing the Game for Pediatric Cancer Patients?
For the full story, visit: www.pbs.org/newshour It looked like someone was hurting Cooper Cochran. The bruises seemed to be everywhere when Cherie Trout picked up her two-year-old from daycare one day. Then came the fevers and distended stomach. And finally, test results: He had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Acute because the cancer cells were packed tightly into his spinal column with a direct pathway to his brain. The call from the hospital ended with more news -- Cooper's condition was so bad that Cherie would need to drive him to the UC Cancer Center in Sacramento within an hour for his first round of chemotherapy. And so it began. The single mother of three spent the next 14 months and juggling Cooper's hospital appointments and a job that kept the family afloat and -- critically -- covered by health insurance. "We were already a paycheck-to-paycheck family so the financial burden has been huge," she said. "I've met many families since Cooper's diagnosis where they lose up to 40 percent of their income. As have I." But it could have been worse, according to the bipartisan Children's Cause for Cancer Advocacy -- especially before 2010 and the passage of some key provisions in the health care reform law. To be certain, in the eyes of many politicians, academics and regular Americans, the health reform law doesn't look like the right solution to what ails the health care system. And some of those critics who think the Affordable Care Act is too intrusive have their own ... From: PBSNewsHour Views: 375 3 ratings Time: 02:12 More in News & Politics

Broken Arms But Not Broken Wings

Born without arms Madanlal lives and dreams like any other. It’s 7 AM on a warm summer morning in the village of Bangaon in northwest Haryana. Outside his thatched hut, 32 year old Madanlal sits on a charpoy. With a shaving brush held tightly between his toes, he works up a rich lather on his scraggly grey beard. Once done, he carefully places the shaving brush down on the charpoy and picks up a fluorescent green plastic razor. Dexterously, one stroke at a time, he begins to shave away his thick mass of facial hair. Born without hands, Madanlal is amongst India’s some 40 million people with physical disability. Often shunned by society, the physically disabled in India are among the most excluded of groups. Schools reject physically challenged children, employers discriminate against physically impaired adults, and more often than not, families reject their physically challenged relatives leaving them to live out their lives in loneliness and even squalor. Even though India has a strong and progressive framework for disabled persons, implementation is weak. The Persons With Disabilities Act of 1995 takes into account not only the medical needs of people with disabilities but also the societal attitudes towards such people, taking into account equal opportunities, right protection and rehabilitation. However, there are hundreds and thousands of people like Madanlal who do not receive any help from the government. Madanlal expresses disappointed with the government’s lack of assistance towards him, but his spirit remains unbroken. He takes pride in the fact that he can shower, shave, cook and even sew with his two feet. When asked about the future, he says he only has two wishes – the first is to learn to drive a car and the second, to find a partner who will help him live a better life. His parents have been good to him, and are appreciative of his self-sufficiency but he cannot expect their assistance into his old age. A wife, he knows, could fill that gap. To help Madanlal please contact our Community Correspondent Satyawan Verma at 09416589987.
