Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape
[LESS INFO] 7 VIEWS | ADDED 13:00:00 05/22/12
This short documentary, narrated by Ed Harris, was produced by the National Gallery of Art in conjunction with the exhibition Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape. Joan Miró was passionately committed to his native Catalonia and its struggle for independence from Spain. But he also longed to escape into artistic freedom. This tension drove his art in strange and beautiful ways. Miró was by turns influenced by Dada, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. His changes in styles and subjects also reflected the horrific events of the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the dictatorship of Franco. This documentary includes original footage shot in Barcelona and Catalonia, images of Miró's paintings and sculpture, and archival footage and photos.

Social Entrepreneurship: Where Theory Meets Practice
Google Tech Talk May 15, 2012 Presented by Kavita Ramdas with Taida Horozovic, Ramzi Jaber, and Steve Williams ABSTRACT Ripples to Waves: The Stanford Program on Social Entrepreneurship presents Kavita Ramdas, Executive Director of Ripples to Waves and former CEO of the Global Fund for Women, in conversation with Taida Horozovic, Steve Williams and Ramzi Jaber, 3 Social Entrepreneurs in Residence at Stanford (SEERS). The SEERS will share their experience of how they initiated programs in Bosnia, San Francisco, and Palestine to address violence against women, expand opportunities for low income workers, and mobilize public opinion in order to increase the engagement of marginalized communities in the democratic process. The SEERS will talk about what they are currently doing at Stanford to bridge the gap between theory and practice as part of an innovative class entitled, "Challenging the Status Quo: Social Entrepreneurs Advancing Democracy, Development and Justice." Kavita and the SEERS will speak about how the new program on Social Entrepreneurship was designed and launched and describe ways in which it seeks to add momentum to global social movements, deepen the capacity of social change leaders, bring practitioner experience to academia, and infuse their own work with a deeper sense of the analysis and theory of social change. Is the Higgs Boson there? Why do we care?

Is the Higgs Boson there? Why do we care?
Abstract: The Large Hadron Collider is the biggest and most complicated scientific device ever built. It smashes together high energy protons in order to create new forms of matter. The accelerator has been running well and the detectors have accumulated vast amounts of data. There are now hints of the long sought after Higgs Boson. I will attempt to explain what this possible discovery means for our understanding of nature at the smallest distances and what challenges it presents for theoretical physics. Speaker Bio: Edward Farhi was trained as a theoretical particle physicist but has also worked on astrophysics, general relativity, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. His present interest is the theory of quantum computation. As a graduate student, Farhi invented the jet variable "Thrust," which is used to describe how particles in high energy accelerator collisions come out in collimated streams. He then worked with Leonard Susskind on grand unified theories with electro-weak dynamical symmetry breaking. He and Larry Abbott proposed an (almost viable) model in which quarks, leptons, and massive gauge bosons are composite. With Robert Jaffe, he worked out many of the properties of a possibly stable super dense form of matter called "Strange Matter" and with Charles Alcock and Angela Olinto he studied the properties of "Strange Stars." His interest then shifted to general relativity and he and Alan Guth studied the classical and quantum prospects of making a new ... Let's Go Further: Build Concurrent Software using the Go Programming Language
Google Tech Talk April 25, 2012 Presented by Sameer Ajmani ABSTRACT Go is an open source programming environment that makes it easy to build simple, reliable, and efficient software. One of Go's key design goals is code adaptability; that it should be easy to take a simple design and build upon it in a clean and natural way. Go Version 1 (or Go 1 for short), which defines a language and a set of core libraries to provide a stable foundation for creating reliable products, projects, and publications, was recently released and available for use. Go was born out of frustration with existing languages and environments for systems programming. Programming had become too difficult and the choice of languages was partly to blame. One had to choose either efficient compilation, efficient execution, or ease of programming; all three were not available in the same mainstream language. Programmers who could were choosing ease over safety and efficiency by moving to dynamically typed languages such as Python and JavaScript rather than C++ or, to a lesser extent, Java. Go is an attempt to combine the ease of programming of an interpreted, dynamically typed language with the efficiency and safety of a statically typed, compiled language. It also aims to be modern, with support for networked and multicore computing. Finally, it is intended to be fast: it should take at most a few seconds to build a large executable on a single computer. To meet these goals required addressing a number ... Windows 8 Metro Style Apps: How to build a great app
[LESS INFO] 88 VIEWS | ADDED 06:32:18 05/03/12
This is a recording from an MSDN Live Meeting broadcast from the Microsoft Belgium office on April 24, 2012.
Abstract
You have looked into building Windows 8 Metro Style Applications. But now comes the step of building a great app that integrates with Windows 8 experiences and that has great user interaction. How do you make your app preferred by users? How do you give confidence to users?
In this session we look at the Metro style guidelines, how to adopt the Metro Design Principles and some examples of going from 'meh' to great!
This session focuses on the User Interaction and Experience, so expect little code but lots of input on how to make your app great, whether you are a designer or a developer.
Speaker: Katrien De Graeve
Katrien is an Evangelist for Microsoft Belgium, focusing on Microsoft Web and UX stack. With a web development background, working at agencies and training in the past, Katrien's focus at Microsoft is on Web, HTML5, Mobile and lately Windows 8 Metro Style apps. Katrien's main role as an evangelist is making developers shine!

The Patent Pollution Problem: Its Causes, Effects and Solutions
Google Tech Talk April 26, 2012 Presented by Daniel B. Ravicher ABSTRACT America's patent system dates back to the founding of our nation when it was expressly included in the Constitution. To be sure, a patent system can provide many great benefits to society. However, patents also pose a great threat to society because the issuance of a patent makes it illegal for any American to do whatever is claimed by the patent. Thus, it is critically important to the success of our patent system that it maintain high patent quality and ensures only deserving patents are issued. Unfortunately, the American patent system today is suffering from extremely low patent quality. Every Tuesday the Patent Office issues 4000 patents after spending on average less than a couple days in reviewing the merits of each patent application. When asked to reconsider the merits of patents it previously issued, the Patent Office concedes that the vast majority of them have questionable validity. When patents end up in court as a result of patent owners suing alleged infringers, a large percentage of the time those asserted patents are found to have been improperly granted. The result is a polluted patent system littered with trash patents that impede technological development. In this Google Tech Talk, Prof. Daniel B. Ravicher of the Public Patent Foundation and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of law will explain why patent quality is so low in America today, describe in detail the ways in which low patent ...
