This story is about a project to turn a car park into a work of art. We'll look at the phrasal verbs 'break down' and 'blow up' as well as the expressions 'up the ante' and 'get a kick'. http://australianetwork.com/englishbites/ep011.htm

I learned about lumiere style from my friend in London, Rupert Howe . (Thous Andreas in Denmark probably gets credit for nudging our group of videobloggers in this direction.) I've been wanting to make one, and then this week at the beach as it was nearing sunset, I just grabbed out little "Sanyo Xacti": waterproof movie camera, and grabbed a clip of Shane and Lexi. Amazing IMO. Unscripted, and unplanned, but notice how psychic and scene-stealing our little pup is! I am also submitting it to the Semanal group, folks who are making one video a week for 2008. You can still join us anytime!

On a recent trip to D.C. I thought I would take a Lumiere video of the White House. I didn't find my footage to be as interesting as my footage of the Washington Monument, so I put that up instead. This is not a Lumiere video, but it was Lumiere-inspired in that I set up a tripod and just filmed what I could see. I always notice so much using this method and often discover things, such as the study of contrasts in this video, by using Lumiere-inspired rules for making videos. This is part of the Lumiere videoblogging challenge. Part of the spirit of the challenge is to avoid setting up a shot or series of video images according to a pre-defined plan, and letting the world “speak to you” by capturing moments as they happen. The rules: * 60 seconds max * Fixed camera * No audio * No zoom * No edit * No effects For more information see: http://videoblogging.info/lumiere/ Of course, in a sense I edited this piece, in terms of how I edited what I saw. When I first took the footage, I noticed a distracting reflection of the window curtain in the image, so I re-positioned the shot again without the curtain reflection figuring as severely as it had in the first take. I did not edit what was in the camera, but I edited what I "saw" by manipulating the environment of the shot. One could argue that I only "saw" the curtain because I was looking at how the shot was coming across for the Lumiere. When you do Lumiere's, how much do you "edit" the environment? A crucial inconsequential moment. The only one I've posted all week. It's been a H.A.R.D. week.
Lumiere Rules is a game I've been wanting to play for a few weeks, inspired by Andreas.
I put down my Nokia for the first time in months and picked up my old Kodak DX7440 (which, totally coincidentally and appropriately) Andreas recommended to me before I even started Fatgirlinohio, when I was looking for a camera and was admiring the colours on his photos and videos on his blog. I love that camera. I needed it for this because it has a flat bottom, unlike my Nokia.
From Andreas's blog , Solitude.dk:
"The rules are as follows:
* 60 seconds max.
* Fixed camera
* No audio
* No zoom
* No edit
* No effects
They mimic the conditions under which the Lumiere brothers made their movies in the late 1800s.
"Aske Dam, a good friend, told me about these rules last summer when we were attached to the same research project. They mimic the conditions under which the Lumiere brothers made their movies in the late 1800s. All transfer seamlessly to web-video and videoblogs except the last one. On the web we are used to compress our videos because the raw files from our cameras are too big to be practical. But is the compression not an added effect? You can certainly tweak the compression settings to provide results that differ tremendously from the raw camera files.
If you make any videos that abide by the Lumiere Rules tag them lumierevideo ."
