The REI Foundation has awarded its annual 0,000 Mary Anderson Legacy Grant to The Mountaineers, a Seattle nonprofit. The grant will help expand the nonprofit’s Mountain Workshops youth educational programming. Last year, the organization provided 1,260 youth-oriented outdoor experiences, including 40 Mountain Workshops that served 550 individuals. The Legacy Grant was introduced in 2009 in celebration of the 100th birthday of REI’s co-founder, Mary Anderson, who is now 102 years old. At an event that was meant to highlight the endorsement of Romney by Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas, veteran Bob Garon of Ebson, N.H., asked the presidential candidate, who stopped by his breakfast table, whether he supports the repeal of the New Hampshire same-sex marriage law.
A Republican-controlled legislature has moved toward repealing the law, enacted in 2009 when Democrats controlled the legislature. A vote could come next month.
Romney told Garon, who was chowing down on his everyday staple of scrambled eggs and shaved ham at the restaurant Chez Vachon, that he supports a repeal of the same-sex marriage law, prompting an emotional exchange.
“I believe a marriage is between a man and a woman,” Romney said, joining Garon in the diner booth after shaking hands with several other patrons.
Garon responded, clarifying that what that meant was that if Romney is elected he would not support any legislation that would change the law so that gay servicemen would get the same benefits as heterosexual couples.
“I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman,” Romney said. “We apparently disagree on that.”
“It’s good to know how you feel, that you do not believe everyone is entitled to their constitutional rights,” the 63-year-old New Hampshire resident responded.
“No, actually I think at the time the Constitution was written it was pretty clear marriage was between a man and a woman,” Romney said, just as one of his campaign aides chimed in that they had “to get going” to another Fox interview.

Kevin Pearce Gets Back on his Snowboard Again

Burton Snowboards is proud to congratulate Burton team rider Kevin Pearce on his first day back on a snowboard since he suffered a traumatic brain injury while training for the Olympics in 2009.
Kevin has been a part of the Burton family for years, receiving his first snowboard from Jake Burton himself back when he was just five years old. In 2004, Kevin earned his first official sponsorship with Burton Snowboards after a Burton team manager was impressed with his riding during summer camp at Mt. Hood. From that point on, Kevin started showing up on podiums everywhere, with career highlights like consecutive Arctic Challenge victories, a pair of Air %Style wins, multiple X Games medals and back-to-back European Open wins.
Everything changed in an instant when Kevin suffered a traumatic brain injury while attempting a Cab double cork during a halfpipe training session on December 31, 2009. Since then, Kevin has spent nearly two years putting all his energy into rehab, re-learning things we all take for granted like eating, walking, talking, balancing and seeing.
Until recently, Kevin didn't know if he would ever be able to snowboard again. So when he got the green light from his doctors it was a dream come true, and everything came together yesterday as he strapped on his board for the first time since the accident. Jake Burton was honored to join Kevin for his inaugural runs at Vail yesterday, before Kevin headed to Breckenridge to ride with friends and fans.
"To get to this point in his recovery, Kevin has worked harder and has had more determination than anyone I know," said Jake Burton, Founder and CEO of Burton Snowboards. "His positive attitude and sense of humor through it all has inspired millions of people, including me personally in a big way. I couldn't be happier to be here with Kevin to get back on snow with him. It was a day I'll never forget."
In a pretty historic moment yesterday, Jake switched out his 'I Ride for Kevin' snowboard sticker (the grassroots campaign Burton created back in 2009 to show support for Kevin) with a new Burton sticker that says 'Ride with Kevin'. The new message pretty much says it all.
In honor of Kevin's amazing milestone, today on Wednesday, December 14th Burton will donate 10% of all proceeds from its sales on http://burton.com to traumatic brain injury research.

Kunst mit QR-Codes: Der Berliner Street Artist Sweza An Plakatwänden, neben Ticketautomaten und auf Visitenkarten: Überall tauchen kleine schwarz-weiße Vierecke mit codeartigen Mustern auf: sogenannte QR-Codes. Erfunden wurden sie 1994 in Japan, auch Europa haben sie schon längst erobert. Der in Berlin lebende Street Artist Sweza nutzt diese QR-Codes, um Street Art über ihre meist kurze Lebensdauer hinaus zu verewigen, Musik zu verbreiten oder Plakate ihres eigentlichen Zwecks zu entfremden. Da Street Art oft schnell übermalt oder entfernt wird, bringt Sweza an den Leerstellen einen QR-Code an. Folgt man dem Link, kann man auf einem Foto sehen, wie die Straßenkunst aussah. Bereits als Teenager modellierte die Französin die berühmtesten Persönlichkeiten Frankreichs aus Wachs. 1802 brachte sie die Wachsfigurensammlung nach London, erweiterte und vergrößerte sie ständig. 1835 wurde ein Museum unter dem Namen "Madame Tussauds" eingerichtet. Die Faszination der täuschend echt aussehenden Figuren ist dabei bis heute ungebrochen. Allein das Londoner Museum wurde seit seiner Gründung von über 500 Millionen Menschen besucht. Weltweit gibt es inzwischen elf weitere Niederlassungen. Eine zwölfte soll 2012 in Sydney öffnen. Der neue Drei-Sterne-Koch Thomas Bühner Thomas Bühner aus Osnabrück ist der einzige Deutsche, der in diesem Jahr vom Guide Michelin neu in den Kreis der Drei-Sterne-Köche aufgenommen wurde. Der Erfolg für Thomas Bühners Restaurant "la vie" kommt nicht wirklich überraschend: Bereits 2005 wurde der heute 49jährige vom Gault Millau zum Koch des Jahres ernannt. Auf den dritten Stern musste er jedoch zwei Jahre lang warten - so lange galt er laut Guide Michelin ganz offiziell als Hoffnungsträger auf die höchste Auszeichnung. Jetzt ist Thomas Bühner einer von neun Drei-Sterne-Köche Deutschlands Möbel aus Sportgeräten Der Karlsruher Designer Andreas Gröbel stellt mit seiner Firma "Zur schönen Linde" Möbel aus Sportgeräten her: Ein Bock wird zum Hocker, ein Pferd zum Sofa und ein Barren zur Bar. 2009 gründete Andreas Gröbel mit einem Freund und Investor die Möbelfirma "Zur schönen Linde". Es gibt zwei Ausstellungsräume in Köln und in Karlsruhe. Seine Sportmöbel sind zuerst in zahlreichen Design-Blogs aufgefallen, jetzt steigt die Nachfrage rasant. Andreas Gröbel stattet Bars, Luxusküchen und Messestände aus. Sein Material findet er in Schulen und Turnvereinen in der Umgebung.
