Chinese government has let hackers 'off the leash'
Cyber security expert Dr James Lewis says China's central leadership have effectively "blessed" the hacking activities that stole massive amounts of information from military contractors, energy companies and other industries in the US. China has frequently been accused of hacking, but the report by US security company Mandiant contains some of the most extensive and detailed accusations to date linking its military to a wave of cyberspying against US and other foreign companies and government agencies. Mandiant said it traced the hacking back to a neighbourhood in the outskirts of Shanghai that includes a 12-story office building run by Unit 61398 of the People's Liberation Army. The unit "has systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organisations," since it began operations in 2006. Dr James Lewis, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies: "I think the way it works is that China's central leadership blessed hacking. And cyber espionage. And they did this years ago. "So what they did is they let units like this off the leash, said go and hack, get Western technology. That would be a good thing. That's different from being in control. And in fact, one of the issues is having let groups like this off the leash, it might be hard for Beijing to get them back on." Dr James Lewis added that the situation is complicated by the fact the China is "one of the most important relationships for the US". China's Foreign Ministry ... Arsene Wenger: things can change in 3 weeks
The Arsenal manager admits his team lacked belief in themselves after a 3-1 home defeat against Bayern Munich left Arsenal facing exit from the Champions League. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has challenged his side to put last night's 3-1 defeat at home to Bayern Munich behind them and regroup to mount a final push for Champions League qualification again next season. Wenger - who earlier this week hit out at a growing number of critics following a shock FA Cup exit at home to Blackburn - accepted the Gunners had been outclassed by the ruthlessly efficient Germans in the first leg of their last 16 European tie at the Emirates Stadium last night. CPS welcomes jail sentence after fatal Oldham gas explosion
Ian Ruston from the Crown Prosecution Service welcomes the sentence given to Andrew Partington who blew up his home in Oldham killing two- year-old neighbour Jamie Heaton. A man who blew up his house in a massive gas blast that killed his two-year-old next-door neighbour was jailed for ten years. The explosion obliterated the rented home of Andrew Partington and neighbouring terrace houses in Shaw, Oldham, last June. The body of toddler Jamie Heaton was found in the wreckage. Partington, 28, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court in November to manslaughter and eight charges of destroying houses in the blast in Buckley Street on June 26 2012 Jamie had been watching television in the lounge while his mother was doing housework and his father was out at work. He lived at 11 Buckley Street with his parents Kenny and Michelle, next door to Partington at number 9 and his partner, Tania Williams, and their children. Partington and Ms Williams had a stormy relationship, according to locals, with police being called to one bust-up. Neighbours said there was another row the night before the blast and Partington had been drinking. The next day, at around 11.20am, the gas ignited. Partington survived and was rescued by the emergency services. He spent weeks in hospital and still suffers from injuries sustained in the blast. The cost of damage to the houses and surrounding streets has been estimated at around %pound1.2 million. Get the latest headlines www.telegraph.co.uk Subscribe to ... Oscar Pistorius court report: 'sitting so close to athlete is intense'
The Telegraph's South Africa correspondent Aislinn Laing reports from court as day two of Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing gets under way. Oscar Pistorius is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day morning. As the prosecution outlined its case against the Paralympic and Olympic athlete, the Telegraph's Aislinn Laing was sitting just 20 inches (50cm) away from the defendant. "I'm sitting in front of the dock today with Mr Pistorius directly behind me," she said. She added that she was asked by Mr Pistorius' lawyer to get his attention to write down the evidence in an attempt to keep the defendant's mind focused and to stop him breaking down. Mr Pistorius will find out tomorrow whether he will be granted bail. If he is held on remand, he is likely to be sent to Pretoria Central Prison, which is notoriously overcrowded and violent. $50m of diamonds stolen in 'under five minutes'
An airport official tells how eight masked gunmen broke into Brussels' international airport and snatched millions of pounds worth of diamonds from the hold of a Swiss-bound plane. Robbers dressed as police and armed with machine guns have stolen 120 parcels of diamonds worth millions of dollars from the runway of Brussels Airport in one of the biggest heists the industry has seen. A van belonging to security firm Brinks, which had just finished loading the diamonds into a Swiss passenger plane, was held up by eight men on Monday evening. According to a spokesman for the airport, the robbers were masked but also wore police uniforms. He said the men drove up in two vehicles after cutting through the airport perimetre fence. The entire heist took less than five minutes and not a shot was fired. The robbers escaped and are now being hunted by police. Prosecutors said they could not yet comment on how much the diamonds taken were worth or to whom they belonged. Kate Middleton shows off baby bump
The Duchess of Cambridge, who is almost halfway through her pregnancy, carried out her first official engagement of the year this morning when she visited Hope House, a 22-bed residential facility for women from all over the country to get over addictions to drugs and alcohol. Her appearance also comes the day after award-winning author Hilary Mantel described the Duchess as "painfully thin" and a "shop window mannequin" - comments which have been criticized by David Cameron and members of the public attending today's event. Action on Addiction is one of five charities of which the Duchess is patron, and during her 90-minute visit she spent time with women who are in recovery. Dozens of photographers and TV crews gathered in the street outside the building to get the first officially-sanctioned pictures of the Duchess since Christmas. Last week photographs of her in a bikini on a beach in Mustique, showing a slight pregnancy bump, were published by magazines in Australia and Italy, but the pictures were not published in the UK after St James's Palace complained that they amounted to an invasion of privacy. Chaos at Oscar Pistorius bail hearing
Telegraph reporter Aislinn Laing describes a chaotic scene at the South African courthouse where Oscar Pistorius has made a second appearance charged with killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Family members and relatives of Oscar Pistorius, including his father Henke, brother Carl and sister Aimee jammed into the court room in South African capital Pretoria on Tuesday for a bail hearing in the killing of the athlete's girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. South African prosecutors charged the international superstar with premeditated murder saying he fired into the door of a cubicle toilet where his girlfriend was cowering after a shouting match on Valentine's Day, hitting her three times said prosecutor Gerrie Nel said. Defence lawyer Barry Roux disputed the murder charge, saying the facts surrounding the shooting in the early hours of Thursday were unclear. The killing has shocked South Africans and many around the world who idolised Pistorius for overcoming adversity to become a sporting champion, competing in the London Olympics last year despite being a Paralympian. Ms Steenkamp, 29, was a model and law graduate who made her debut on a South African reality TV programme on Saturday, two days after her death. Pistorius, who had appeared grim and solemn at the start of the hearing, broke down and sobbed softly with his head in his hands as his lawyer argued that he had mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar. The shooting in the early hours of February 14 came after neighbours had ... From: telegraphtv Views: 17082 5 ratings Time: 01:49 More in News & Politics
