Australian school evacuated after pupil brings hand grenade
Students were evacuated from Hunter Christian School in Newcastle, Australia on Wednesday when an 11-year-old brought a hand grenade to class for show and tell. A police bomb squad removed the device and cordoned off the area around the school after the girl turned up at a morning class with the grenade, which did not have a pin. Police said the girl's family received the grenade from a friend several weeks ago and thought it was a dummy. The grenade has been taken for examination by Defence Force munitions experts but is believed to have been an inactive device, possibly from the First World War. The school's headmaster, Boyd Allen, said the girl's teacher brought the grenade to him and he immediately evacuated the 450 students and 60 teachers and called the police. Egyptian protesters demonstrate outside presidential palace
Up to 100,00 people surround the palace, forcing President Morsi to leave amid fears the building might be overrun by protesters angry at his constitutional power-grab. Mr Morsi was forced to leave the palace through a back door as up to 100000 people moved in to surround it on all sides. Some stones were thrown, one hitting the rear car in the president's convoy. Ignoring volleys of tear gas, the protesters burst through first one then a second line of police set in the way to reach the palace, which was the site of the final act in the overthrow of former dictator Hosni Mubarak last year. Then, as on Tuesday, demonstrators chanted: "The people want the downfall of the regime". Software millionnaire McAfee to seek asylum in Guatemala
US anti-virus software tycoon John McAfee, who is on the run from police in Belize seeking to question him in a murder probe, has crossed into Guatemala and says he is seeking asylum there. Read more: www.telegraph.co.uk Mr McAfee, who made his fortune designing anti-virus computer software, has hired Telesforo Guerra, the former attorney general of Guatemala, as his lawyer. Mr Guerra told AFP that he met with Mr McAfee at a Guatemala City hotel on Tuesday. He said: "I have to manage his political asylum." Mr McAfee, 67, has been on the run since his neighbour, the American businessman Gregory Viant Faull, was shot dead last month. Police in Belize, where the murder took place, say he is not a suspect, but Mr McAfee believes he will be "summarily executed" if he hands himself in. Belize's prime minister has denied the claim and called the 67-year-old paranoid and "bonkers". David Beckham bids farewell to LA Galaxy after six year stint
The former Manchester United ace helped LA Galaxy to their second successive championship win in US Major League Soccer. A chant of "thank you Beckham" rang out from LA Galaxy fans to David Beckham, as the crowd continued their celebration of the team's championship win in Los Angeles. "It's been a good few days," said Beckham. "I want to thank you guys for the support you've given me over the last six years, maybe five or five and a half, it was a little bit of a dodgy patch, but apart from that, I want to thank you." The entire Galaxy squad was in attendance to express gratitude to their fans after the team won their second successive MLS Cup on 1 December. The league has enjoyed rising attendances during Beckham's six years as a player. Club in shock after Dutch linesman is kicked to death after football match
Richard Nieuwenhuizen, 41, an assistant referee for the Dutch youth club Buitenboys was rushed to hospital after being punched and kicked by players from opponents Nieuw-Sloten. Richard Nieuwenhuizen died in hospital hours after players from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten allegedly punched and kicked him during a football match in the town of Almere. Buitenboys club chairman Marcel Oost said the 41-year-old linesman died on Monday evening but did not announce the exact cause of death. "He was a referee for the team B3, the team where his son is playing. He was following all the matches and training sessions his son took part in. He was glad to be a part of this club and proud of his son. "This is not only a tragedy for Almere and our club, but for Dutch football in general. This cannot happen on the football field," said Mr Oost. Three players, whose ages range from 15 to 16, were arrested earlier on Monday for their alleged involvement in the attack. Barack Obama lays down red line to Syria over chemical weapons
President Obama warns "there will be consequences" if the regime of Bashar Al-Assad used chemical weapons amid reports Syrian military forces were readying supplies of deadly nerve gas. President Barack Obama warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad not to use chemical weapons against opposition forces, saying there would be consequences if he were to do so. "The world is watching," he said. "The use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable and if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons there will be consequences and you will be held accountable," Mr Obama said in remarks to a gathering of nuclear proliferation experts. The President's warning came as US officials claimed to have detected signs that Syrian forces were mixing the chemicals needed to produce sarin gas, a nerve agent banned under international rules of war.
