Australia fearing the worst as wildfires spread
Authorities fear fatalities after 50-thousand acres of Tasmania is ravaged by fire while the New South Wales premier warns Tuesday could be the "worst fire danger day the state has ever faced." The sweltering conditions have led to hundreds of fires across the country and are set to sweep across Sydney for the first time. Temperatures in the city are set to reach 109F (43C) on Tuesday. The Premier of the state of New South Wales, Barry O'Farrell, today urged people to prepare for extremely dangerous conditions. Holidaymakers and campers in the countryside have been told to avoid places at risk. "Tomorrow is not just going to be in the 40s, it will perhaps be the worst fire danger the state has ever faced," he said. "Do what emergency services tell you... Rethink your need to be in the bush, have a bush fire plan, be prepared but most importantly make sure you are well away from harm's way." Fire crews warned that heavy rains in recent years have led to a thick undergrowth in bushland that can swiftly burn. Northern Ireland: police chief warns protesters to stop violence
Loyalist violence over the flying of the union flag will be firmly dealt with for as long as necessary, Northern Ireland's police chief declared after a fourth night of rioting. Matt Baggott's warning came just hours before fresh disturbances erupted in Belfast, with police once again coming under attack. A mob hurled steel barriers, bricks, fireworks and bottles at officers patrolling Castlereagh Street in the east of the city last night. A protest in the area earlier in the day had dispersed, before factions broke away and launched an onslaught on police lines. Detectives from the Serious Crime branch have charged a 38-year-old man with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, riotous behaviour and failing to remove a disguise when requested by a constable. Novice pilot performs textbook landing after losing wheel mid flight
The trainee airline pilot was forced to circle for four hours above Mangalore airport near Melbourne in order to dump fuel, before successfully landing his Piper Warrior aircraft on two wheels. A 21-year-old Chinese trainee pilot had a lucky escape after safely landing a small plane which lost a wheel mid-air. Local media reported that the Piper Warrior aircraft had taken off from Mangalore airport, about two hours' drive north of the city of Melbourne, Australia early on Monday when the drama unfolded. Airport officials said the pilot, who was the only person onboard the plane, circled the airport for almost four hours to burn up fuel. The aircraft landed safely before skidding and spinning on dirt and grass next to the runway. The pilot, believed to be a trainee with China Southern Airlines, was assessed by paramedics but did not require treatment, according to local media. Eyewitness describes Briton's fatal waterfall plunge in Australia
The man was walking with a group on Sunday near the Wentworth Falls in Australia's Blue Mountains when he slipped over the edge. Police today recovered the body of the young tourist from the popular tourist spot, about 40 miles from Sydney. The man has yet to be named but his parents in Britain have been notified and are arranging to travel to Australia. A witness, Rosa Petroccitto, said she warned the man and his friends to be careful after seeing them climbing on slippery rocks near a walking track at the picturesque Wentworth Falls. The fall occurred yesterday at about 2:15pm. "I saw a group of French and English kids -- you know, adults -- mucking around on the rocks and it's very slippery," Ms Petroccitto told ABC Radio. "Then they went down to the next one and I knew something was going to happen. We just saw them all panic and a 20-year-old boy fell over 100 metres [328 feet] down the waterfall. [It is] pretty sad, very unfortunate." One of the man's friends called for help and emergency workers rushed to the scene. Paramedics established that the man had died but rescue workers struggled to recover the body due to high winds. Gerard Depardieu makes a big impression on Vladimir Putin
The 64-year-old dines with the Russian president on his arrival in Moscow, after the country offers him citizenship as the actor flees high tax rates in his native France. French actor Gerard Depardieu has received a Russian passport after flying to Russia for a late night dinner with President Vladimir Putin. The pair enjoyed a dinner in Sochi, southern Russia, on Saturday night, to celebrate Depardieu's Russian citizenship, sought as part of his battle against a proposed super-tax on millionaires in France. Mr Putin granted his request last week. Russian television showed him embracing the actor as he arrived late on Saturday at the President's residence in Sochi, the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The two men were then shown chatting over supper, discussing a soon-to-be-released film in which Depardieu plays Russian monk Grigory Rasputin. Stafford Hospital scandal 'worst in NHS history'
The founder of Cure The NHS, Julie Bailey, whose mother died at Stafford Hospital, gives her reaction to a report into its failings. The Sunday Telegraph understands that the report on Stafford hospital, where up to 1200 people died needlessly in appalling conditions, will call for an overhaul of regulation to ensure poor managers are weeded out, and better training for nurses and healthcare assistants. The chairman, Robert Francis QC, is set to deliver a damning verdict on the whole of the health service. He will warn of a "culture of fear" from Whitehall down to the wards, in which pressure is heaped on staff to put management demands before patients. Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, said the events at Stafford, and a series of failings at other hospitals, represented "the most shocking betrayal of NHS founding values in its history". Ms Bailey led a public campaign to expose the failings at Stafford Hospital, before an official investigation revealed appalling care and up to 1200 needless deaths between 2005 and 2008 Read more: www.telegraph.co.uk Get the latest headlines www.telegraph.co.uk Subscribe to The Telegraph www.youtube.com Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter twitter.com Follow us on Google+ plus.google.com Telegraph.co.uk and YouTube.com/TelegraphTV are websites of The Daily Telegraph, the UK's best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture. Brothers restore a WW II bomber as a tribute to their fallen brother
Two Lincolnshire farmers have spent a fortune restoring a World War Two Avro Lancaster bomber in memory of their brother, 19-year-old Christopher Panton, who was shot down in 1944. The night he was told that his brother had been shot down, Fred Panton ran off into a barn and hid. "I daredn't go back in the house," says Fred, who was 13 at the time. "I was sure it would hit my mother hard." His big brother, Christopher, was only 19, but had already been on dozens of raids over Germany when his bomber was attacked by night fighters and exploded in the sky near Nuremberg in March1944. That was nearly 70 years ago. Now Fred and another brother, Harold, are building a remarkable tribute to the handsome, blond sibling they lost that spring: a fully-restored Lancaster bomber that will soon fly again. The brothers are 81 and 79 now; they made money farming chickens, and spent much of it in honour of Christopher. First they bought the old airfield near their old home in East Kirkby, Lincs, and recreated the way it looked under Bomber Command. Assad mobbed by supporters
Hundreds of supporters swarmed around Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after he made a speech denouncing the opposition as "puppets of the West". President Bashar al-Assad made his first speech for six months, confirming he is still in his capital Damascus but taking a hardline stance offering no new concessions to the rebel opposition which has seized swathes of Syria. He announced what he described as a peace plan on Sunday, calling for a reconciliation conference with "those who have not betrayed Syria", to be followed by the formation of a new government and an amnesty. "The first stage of a political solution would require that regional powers stop funding and arming (the opposition), an end to terrorist operations and controlling the borders," he said. "We will not have dialogue with a puppet made by the West," he said. Mr Assad was greeted like a conquering hero by an audience at a theatre in Damascus, which rose and chanted his name. As he finished, he stepped down into the auditorium and was mobbed like a pop star. Belgians brave North Sea swim
Thousands of people braved the cold on Saturday to take a plunge in the chilly waters of the North Sea. An estimated 6000 people ran across the sand and into the water in Ostende, Belgium, to celebrate the new year. The Annual New Year's plunge was cancelled last year because of unsafe weather conditions, but on Saturday, the air was mild, reaching 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). Nevertheless, it was not an ideal swimming temperature. Tanee Grade is no stranger to cold water but was still feeling the effects. "We are divers so actually we are used to this. But now it's very cold," she said. Tasmanian police look for bushfires victims
Police look through the burnt out remains of houses as bushfires continue to rage throughout the Australian state of Tasmania. Firefighters continued to battle bushfires throughout the Australian state of Tasmania. Temperatures and winds have eased since Friday but are expected to rise again through Monday and Tuesday. In the area around Forcett, east of Hobart, which bore the brunt of Friday's blaze, police are now searching rubble to determine whether anyone has died. Police said late on Sunday that about 100 people remain missing, with several hundred displaced by the bushfires. Scott Tilyard, Acting Tasmanian Police Commissioner, said there are teams on the ground "going through the process of having to go door-to-door, literally on every fire damaged property" -- including shacks, houses and outbuildings -- "confirming that there are no people who have lost their lives at that particular location." Obama: 'no compromise' on debt ceiling
President Barack Obama hails a last-minute deal that avoids the so-called fiscal cliff but says it is just one step in a broader effort to boost the economy and shrink federal deficits. Mr Obama said in his radio and Internet address Saturday that the new law, approved by Congress on New Year's Day and signed Thursday, raises taxes on the wealthiest Americans while preventing a middle-class tax hike that could have thrown the economy back into recession. With the "fiscal cliff" crisis barely over, the President faces new battles in Congress over raising the country's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit, as well as more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts for the military and domestic programs which were delayed by two months under the compromise. Lawmakers promise to replace those across-the-board cuts with more targeted steps that could take longer to implement. Mr Obama, speaking from Hawaii, where he is on vacation with his family, said he is willing to consider more spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit. But he said he "will not compromise" over his insistence that Congress lift the federal debt ceiling. The nation's credit rating was downgraded the last time lawmakers threatened inaction on the debt ceiling, in 2011. Tuna sells for %pound1 million Japan
A bluefin tuna sold for a record 155.4 million yen (%pound1.09 million) at a Tokyo auction, smashing last year's previous high highest price. The 222-kilogramme (489-pound) tuna was caught off northeastern Japan and transported to Tokyo's huge Tsukiji fish market. The winning bidder, Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co., which operates the Sushi-Zanmai restaurant chain, said the price was "a bit high," but that he wanted to give Japan a "boost," according to Kyodo News agency. Mr Kimura also set the old record of 56.4 million yen at last year's New Year's auction, which tends to attract high bids as a celebratory way to kick off the new year - or get some publicity. Mr Kimura was planning to serve the fish to customers later on Saturday. Chavez could be sworn in later
Venezuela's Vice-President Nicolas Maduro says that President Hugo Chavez could be sworn in by the Supreme Court later on if he is not able to take the oath of office next week before lawmakers. Mr Maduro made the comment in a televised government interview on Friday night with Venezuela's Information Minister Ernesto Villegas. He held a small copy of the Venezuelan constitution in his hand and said that Chavez as a re-elected president, remains in office beyond the swearing-in date stipulated in the constitution. "The constitution establishes that as a formality he should be sworn in before the National Assembly on 10 January. But already on 10 January, the new constitutional period begins and he continues his functions and he can take the oath of office, as stipulated in the Constitution, at the moment that he goes before the Supreme Court of Justice," he said. He also dismissed the argument by some opposition leaders that new elections must be called if President Chavez does not take office as scheduled on Thursday and accused them of "subverting the constitution". Opposition leaders have demanded that the government provide more specific information about President Chavez's condition, and say a new election should be held within 30 days if the he does not return to Venezuela by inauguration day. Teenagers get stuck in tree on thawing frozen lake
Two US teenagers were rescued after spending at least two hours hanging onto a dead tree after ice on a lake began to crack. The Arizona teenagers were taken to a hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia after being rescued on Wednesday, said the Show Low Fire District captain. "We saw my brother so we decided to cross the lake to get to him," one of the rescued teenagers, Alex Orton, told ABC via Skype on Thursday. "Then right in the middle it started cracking. So we jumped on the tree that was in the middle of the lake," he said. Mr Orton and his friend Christian Van Aller clung to the branches in freezing temperatures. A third teenager who had stayed on the bank of Fool Hollow Lake near Show Low called for help, authorities said. Emergency personnel retrieved the boys after firefighter Jack Gessner made his way across the lake with a rope attached to a boat carrying other rescuers. Mr Gessner said he initially crawled atop the ice then had to make his way through the water after he had covered half of the 200 feet and the ice broke. Firefighters battle Tasmania wildfires
Bushfires have forced thousands of people to flee their homes in the southern island state of Tasmania. The fires scorched a large swathe of land all the way to the waterline and some residents and tourists had to wade into the sea to escape the fire, which has either damaged or destroyed at least 100 homes, businesses and a school. The worst hit area is around the small town of Dunalley, east of the Tasmanian capital of Hobart, where 65 buildings including the town's school, police station and bakery were destroyed, local media reported. Officials had been investigating a report that one person died in the blaze on Friday, but on Saturday, police said there were no confirmed deaths or injuries from the fire. The island state's Fire Service has issued emergency warnings and officials said it will be a while before the fires are contained. Some of the stranded tourists who spent the night in the historic Port Arthur, a former prison colony, were evacuated by ferry to Hobart.
