Aftermath of strike that killed Hamas military chief
Hamas has said an Israeli air strike in Gaza killed Ahmed Jabari, the head of its military wing, in an attack on a vehicle on Wednesday. Jabari, who is the most senior Hamas official to be killed since an Israeli invasion of Gaza four years ago, was killed in an air strike on a vehicle, in a dramatic resumption of Israel's policy of assassinating Palestinian militant leaders. He has long topped Israel's most-wanted list, the Associated Press reported, and was blamed for in a string of attacks, including the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit in 2006. Jabari's son was also reportedly killed in the targeted airstrike, according to Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, talking to Al Jazeera in Doha. Prince Charles celebrates his 64th birthday with a Hobbit tour
Director Peter Jackson treats Charles and Camilla to a behind-the-scenes look at the props for his new film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The Prince of Wales celebrated his 64th birthday with the Duchess of Cornwall in New Zealand. Charles got an unusual birthday present when he travelled to the Wellington suburb of Miramar, which has been dubbed "Wellywood" because of the movie-making companies in the area. The Prince was given a sneak preview of costumes and props from the new blockbuster by Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson who is bringing The Hobbit, another classic children's story by JRR Tolkien, to the silver screen. A dwarf from the movie, played by actor Mark Hadlow, offered his sword and service to the royal, much to his amazement. When the Prince came across the diminutive creature during his tour of a movie special effects company, the dwarf dropped to one knee and said in a booming voice he had been released by Jackson "for you to command as you see fit, your servant Dori". Spain anti-austerity protests: 'there is a great deal of anger'
Fiona Govan, the Telegraph's correspondent in Madrid reports on the escalating tension as Spanish workers join strikes to protest against spending cuts and tax hikes that trade unions say have brought misery and deepened the country's economic crisis. It is Spain's second general strike against the conservative government since it took power in December, making it the first time in the country's history that two general strikes have been staged within the same year. The strike in Spain coincides with industrial action in Portugal and Greece on the same day and comes amid rising social unrest over massive unemployment -- over 25 per cent -- and deep austerity measures designed to slash Spain's public deficit. Although discontent amongst Spaniards is on the rise and public protests are daily occurrences, not everyone believes a second general strike will solve the country's economic situation. The date chosen for the walkout is just days before the anniversary of the Nov 20 general election last year which swept Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government to power in a landslide victory over the Socialists. Coroner delivers 'scathing' verdict of police after student'
The family of Brazilian student Roberto Laudisio Curti was in the the New South Wales Coroner's court on Wednesday (November 14) to hear the recommendations of Magistrate Mary Jerram that five of the 11 police officers involved in the restraining and tasering of Curti which resulted in his death on March 18, be considered for disciplinary charges. CCTV footage showed Sydney police tasering Mr Curti in the early hours of March 18, after a late-night disturbance at a convenience store. He later died. Mr Curti's family was in court to hear the coroner's recommendation that five of the 11 police officers involved in the restraining and tasering of Curti should be considered for disciplinary charges. "What eventuated was a frenzy of officers, most of them very junior and inexperienced, half of whom did not even know what Roberto was suspected of having done as they joined in the chase and behaving out of control," she said. The New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione accepted the findings: "We live with what the coroner has given us, we will go forward, we will not be shying away from what has to be done and clearly there is much work before us." Woman escapes dramatic fireball as plane crashes into Mississippi house
A small plane crashes into a house in Jackson Mississippi, turning it into a giant fireball and killing three people. Local newspaper, the Clarion-Ledger, reported that the pilot had asked air traffic control for permission to land just minutes after taking off, but did not make it to the runway before crashing into the house. It is thought that the owner of the home managed to jump out of a window to safety just before the 1972 Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six burst into flames. She is understood to have been at home on her own at the time of the crash. The pilot and the plane's two passengers were killed. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead an investigation into the accident, according to a statement by the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. Timelapse video of the total solar eclipse in Australia
A timelapse video taken from Palm Cove beach in Queensland as the clouds part and a total solar eclipse darkens the Australian sky. Australians donned protective glasses as the clouds parted to allow them to witness one of nature's greatest phenomena -- a total eclipse of the sun. All eyes and cameras turned to the heavens over tropical north Queensland as the moon began moving between the Earth and the sun, like a small bite which gradually increases in size. Cloud cover threatened to spoil the party and huge cheers erupted when they parted to give tens of thousands of eclipse hunters a perfect view of totality -- when the moon completely covers the sun and a faint halo or corona appears. The path of the eclipse got under way shortly after daybreak when the moon's shadow, or umbra, fell in the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park in the Northern Territory, about 155 miles east of Darwin. The umbra then moved eastward before alighting in north Queensland -- one of the few places it could be viewed by humans and where tourists and scientists flocked to witness the region's first total solar eclipse in 1300 years. CIA scandal: Barack Obama still 'has faith' in General John Allen
President Barack Obama has faith in General John Allen to continue commanding US forces in Afghanistan while under investigation for alleged inappropriate communication with a woman at the center of the scandal involving former CIA Director General Petraeus, the White House has said. "He has faith in General Allen," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, saying the president believed General Allen was doing a good job in Afghanistan. The revelation about General Allen threatens to fell another of the US military's biggest names and suggests that the scandal involving General Petraeus - a retired four-star general who had General Allen's job in Afghanistan before moving to the CIA last year - could expand. The FBI uncovered between 20000 and 30000 pages of communications - mostly emails spanning from 2010 to 2012 - between General Allen and Jill Kelley, who has been identified as a longtime friend of the Petraeus family and a Tampa, Florida, volunteer social liaison with military families at MacDill Air Force Base, according to a US official. It was Ms Kelley's complaints about harassing emails from the woman with whomGeneral Petraeus had had an affair, Paula Broadwell, that prompted an FBI investigation that ultimately disclosed General Petraeus' involvement with Broadwell. General Petraeus resigned from the CIA post on November 9. President Barack Obama has put Allen's nomination to be Commander of US European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe on hold ... The insider's guide to avoiding junkmail
Robert Rijkhoff from stopjunkmail.org.uk gives his top tips for reducing the amount of junkmail households receive. Households have a range of options to tackle the scourge of junk mail says Robert Rijkhoff of stopjunkmail.org.uk The first step is to visit two websites, junkbuster.org.uk and stayprivate.org, that allow individuals to sign-up to a number of different opt-out schemes. Another route is to remove yourself from the edited register of the electoral roll, which contains name and address information that local authorities will sell to companies for a small fee. Mr Rijkhoff suggests contacting the elections office at your local council, or alternatively by ticking an opt-out box on your annual electoral registration form. Unaddressed junk mail can be reduced by using a 'no junk mail' sign on your door, and by signing up to the Royal Mail opt-out scheme. David Cameron: I am fed up that Abu Qatada is still at large
Prime Minister David Cameron has said he feels exasperated by radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada winning an appeal to stay in Britain. Terror suspect Abu Qatada was released from Long Lartin prison today after winning the latest round in his battle against deportation. The terror suspect was granted bail by a senior immigration judge yesterday after ruling that the government had failed to prove he would face a fair trial in Jordan on charges of plotting bomb attacks. During a visit to Italy where he held a press conference with Italian Prime Minister, Mario Monti, David Cameron said he was "completely fed up" with the fact that radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada won an appeal to stay in the UK. "He has no right to be there, we believe he is a threat to our country, we've moved heaven and earth to try and comply with every single dot and comma of every single convention to get him out of our country," he said. Abu Qatada: ignoring the courts and sending him back to Jordan is 'illegal'
Immigration lawyer Harjap Singh Bhanga says the Home Office would be illegally overruling the British courts if it were to place Abu Qatada on a flight to Jordan. Terror suspect Abu Qatada was released from Long Lartin prison today after winning the latest round in his battle against deportation. Qatada was driven away from the maximum security prison HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire in a black Volkswagen people carrier. The heavily-bearded cleric, who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle, made no attempt to hide from waiting media cameras and appeared to be smiling. Fenton remastered for 4G
Fenton is back, bigger and better than ever, as EE remasters the iconic viral video to celebrate the launch of its 4G data service in the UK. It is exactly a year since a passer-by filmed an unruly Labrador chasing a terrified herd of deer in Richmond park, much to the distress of its owner who could be heard screaming, "Fenton! Fenton!" to no avail. The resulting video has been viewed more than seven million times on YouTube. This new take on Fenton's boisterous adventures, which has a big-budget Hollywood feel to it, is EE's tongue-in-cheek way of showing 4G customers that they can stream HD videos on the go. This time, Fenton has a lot more to contend with than just a herd of deer, as he is seen chasing a Tyrannosaurus Rex through Richmond Park at one point. Honorary degree for Oscar Pistorius
South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius picks up an honorary degree from the University of Strathclyde before touring the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics. The 25-year-old, nicknamed "Blade Runner", made history in London this year by becoming the first double leg amputee to compete at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The sprinter visited Glasgow, where he is due to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2014, to collect an honorary doctorate which, he said, capped off an amazing year. He praised the University of Strathclyde for "leading the way in prosthetic research and development", before meeting staff and patients at the university's pioneering National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics. Pistorius said he hoped that the Paralympics had inspired budding athletes: "If you look at the times that the amputees were setting four years ago the time difference between first place and last place in the 100 metres final was one and a half seconds, this year it was half a second. FBI search Gen Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell's home
FBI agents search the home of Paula Broadwell, Paula Broadwell, the woman at the centre of the scandal involving former CIA Director David Petraeus. General Petraeus resigned as head of the CIA on Friday, after an FBI investigation uncovered an extramarital affair with Ms Broadwell. The investigation began when Jill Kelley, a long-time friend of the Petraeus family, complained to the FBI that Ms Broadwell had sent her threatening emails, warning her to stay away from Mr Petraeus. Meanwhile, a senior defence official has said under condition of anonymity that General John Allen, the top US commander in Afghanistan, is also under investigation for alleged inappropriate communication with Ms Kelley, the very same woman who sparked the investigation into Broadwell and Petraeus. The US official said the FBI uncovered between 20000 and 30000 pages of communications, mostly emails spanning from 2010 to 2012, between Gen Allen and Ms Kelley.
