Helicopter crash: Eyewitness describes the scene at Vauxhall
Tom Avis, a local construction working describes the moment he saw the helicopter crash to the ground in South London. Mr Avis, who was working on a nearby building site said he heard a "big bang" and then saw the helicopter falling from the sky before crashing near to Vauxhall Bridge. He then ran to the scene of the crash, where he saw the helicopter's engine lying on the ground. He said: "I could see the whole helicopter on fire, the car on fire, just flames everywhere. We saw people on the side of the road being helped by the paramedics. It was just absolute chaos." Commuter Rob Oxley, who arrived in the area just after the crash, described seeing a huge plume of smoke rising in the air. Boeing 787 Dreamliner evacuated at Japanese airport
Boeing 787 Dreamliners have been grounded for safety checks by two Japanese airlines after one was forced to make an emergency landing in the latest blow for the new jet. Japan's two biggest airlines have grounded all their Dreamliner 787s after an All Nippon Airways flight was forced into an emergency landing. ANA said a battery problem triggered a cockpit error message that forced the pilots, who could also reportedly smell smoke, to land the plane in southwestern Japan. It has since grounded its 17 aircraft pending safety checks. Japan Airlines swiftly followed suit, saying it would suspend all Boeing 787 flights scheduled to leave Japan on Wednesday due to safety concerns. The carriers didn't say how long their fleet of planes will be parked. Japan's Transport Ministry said it considered the emergency landing a major incident and that an investigation into the incident had been opened. One man in his 60s was sent to hospital to be treated for minor hip injuries after going down the emergency slides at the airport, the fire department said. Broadcaster NHK quoted a passenger saying he had feared the plane was going to crash as it flew over Japan's fourth largest island of Shikoku. "I smelled something strange when the plane was going into a cruising altitude after take-off," he told the broadcaster. "I didn't see smoke." "The plane then started descending rapidly and I thought 'this could crash'. I was surprised as there was an announcement that it was making an ... Switzerland hosts Snow Golf World Cup
Carlo Lazzati and Caroline Rominger won the 34th Snow Golf Cup in Silvaplana, Switzerland on Sunday. As Britain comes to a standstill in the snow, eighty players take part in the 34th Snow Golf Cup in snow-covered Silvaplana in Switzerland. Winter weather proves no hindrance for the members of the Engadine Golf Club in Switzerland. They were amongst the 80 players taking part in the 34th Snow Golf Cup in snow-covered Silvaplana on Sunday, with the field also including players from Italy, Germany and Austria. The tournament is held on a nine-hole course, with each hole measuring 120m to 180m in length. Usual rules apply, although the holes are much bigger than regular cups - one concession in an otherwise highly demanding event. Italian Carlo Lazzati won the competition with a gross score of 32 and a net score of 30, while local player Caroline Rominger was the lowest scoring woman in the field, with gross and net scores of 33. Armstrong team-mate: Lance 'ruined people's lives'
Frankie Andreu, former cycling team-mate of Lance Armstrong, and his wife Betsy, who testified against Armstrong in 2005, say the disgraced cyclist 'ruined people's lives' as he denied the truth about doping. Ahead of the airing of Lance Armstrong's Oprah Winfrey interview, in which has been reported that the former US Postal admits to doping, a former team-mate has attacked the retired rider for ruining the lives of those who previously spoke out against him. Frankie Andreu, who captained the US Postal team along with Armstrong from 1998-2000, said that he and has wife Betsy had been "ripped apart by Lance and all of his people and all his supporters repeatedly" for having the courage to speak what is now being recognised as the truth about the rider's doping. "And it's not only us, he's ruined a lot of people lives." Betsy Andreu was one of the first people to publicly accuse Armstrong of using performance-enhancing drugs. She testified in a case brought by SCA Promotions challenging a multi-million dollar bonus paid to Armstrong in 2005. Paul McGinley to captain Europe at 2014 Ryder Cup
Paul McGinley will captain the European Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles, Scotland in 2014 after the European Tour's tournament committee decided to appoint the Irishman following a meeting in Abu Dhabi today. Paul McGinley thanked Rory McIlroy for the part he played in him becoming Europe's new Ryder Cup captain, and said: "If Rory does not make the team I think he has got a good chance of a pick now!" McGinley got the nod at the European Tour tournament committee meeting in Abu Dhabi, the Dubliner seeing off four other candidates - Scottish trio Colin Montgomerie, Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle, and Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez - to land the coveted position. McGinley, a match-winning hero of Europe's 2002 win and an assistant in the last two victories, was the unanimous choice of the committee on which he also sits, and is relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against United States skipper Tom Watson next year. "I'm obviously absolutely thrilled and delighted to have this honour," said McGinley. "I'm relishing the thought of taking on one of my great heroes," he added of Watson. Double decker pushed up icy hill in Norwich
Heavy snow continued to fall in Norfolk and Norwich, as people came together to help drivers stuck in difficult conditions. As the cold snap continues across the country, Eastern areas bore the brunt of the snowfall with 42 schools closing in Norfolk, all planes grounded at Norwich International Airport and a six-vehicle pile-up on the A11 leaving three people with injuries. The Met Office recorded snow depths of 8cm (3in) in Norfolk and Suffolk this morning as the snow continued to fall and the bad weather continued to cause havoc on transport networks. The AA reported 7700 breakdowns by lunchtime today, around 1000 an hour, with East Anglia and Essex the busiest regions. Pickles: Christian cases 'should not go to Strasbourg'
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles welcomes the ruling in the Nadia Eweida case but hints that human rights laws may need to change in the UK. Mr Pickles was speaking after a Christian airline check-in clerk won the right to wear a cross at work in a landmark case set to define religious freedom in Britain and across Europe. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that the UK had failed to protect Nadia Eweida's freedom to manifest her faith in the workplace. However, the ECHR rejected a similar legal challenge from Shirley Chaplin, a nurse, ruling that the hospital where she worked should be able to refuse permission to wear a cross on "health and safety" grounds. And, in a decision which could have even wider long-term implications, the court also rejected parallel challenges brought by two other Christians who lost their jobs for taking a stand on what they saw as a matter of conscience. Gary McFarlane, a Relate counsellor, and Lillian Ladele, a marriage registrar, both resisted performing tasks at work they believed would amount to condoning homosexuality. Rare cheetah cubs unveiled at Australian zoo
A zoo near Adelaide announced the birth of five cheetah cubs on Tuesday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. The cubs were born in October 2012 at Monarto Zoo but the announcement was delayed to give the cubs time to grow and settle into their new home. Mother 'Nakula' lost her first litter in 2008, the report said. Amongst the cub litter were two 'robust boys' and three girls, one who was very timid, said zoo keeper Michelle Lloyd. The playful cubs have spent a lot of time jumping on their mum and grooming each other, Lloyd said. The cubs were raised in a private area of the zoo where there is little human contact, and camera allowed staff to watch their birth and continued development. It's been nine years since the zoo displayed a little of cubs, which they say are "the most endangered big cat in Africa" the report said. "They are so tough to breed in captivity so it's huge for the region... To see her go on and be a breeding female is the icing on the cake," Lloyd said. Nicole Cooke: Lance Armstrong 'robbed' clean riders of wins
The 2008 Olympic and world road-race champion cyclist, Nicole Cooke, added her voice to the storm of criticism of Lance Armstrong saying he had stolen wins. After more than a decade of denying that he doped to win the Tour de France seven times, Armstrong has sat down in a 90-minute, question-and-answer session with Oprah. Speaking on Sky News, she said Armstrong's actions had stolen wins from honest riders who had ridden "clean". "While Lance Armstrong and people like him have profited from the wins that they've robbed from people, there are so many people who aren't fortunate like myself to have been able to win clean and have success riding clean," Cooke explained. "There are so many riders who have stayed true to their morals, have ridden clean, and never had the opportunity to stand on the top of the podium, or in some cases never even got onto breaking into the professional scene, and Lance Armstrong and people similar to him have taken away whole careers from people," she added. Armstrong has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and for a decade he strenuously denied doping and resorted to lawsuits to protect his reputation. Australia wants Lance Armstrong to pay money back
South Australia state Premier Jay Weatherill said Lance Armstrong should repay the state the appearance fees after his reported confession to chat show host, Oprah Winfrey, that he used performance enhancing drugs during his glittering cycling career. Speaking after Armstrong reportedly admitted during an interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey to using performance-enhancing drugs, Weatherill said that if the 41-year-old Texan confessed to being a drug cheat, "many South Australians will feel they were deceived by him". Armstrong, who retired in 2005 after winning seven consecutive Tours de France, used the 2009 edition of the Tour de France for his return to the sport before he was subsequently banned and stripped of his titles. "I'd be more than happy for Mr Armstrong to make any repayment of monies to us," added Weatherill. Armstrong competed at the Tour Down Under, the now traditional curtain-raiser to the WorldTour, for three successive years. The South Australian government has never revealed how much Armstrong was paid to appear, but it was reportedly in the millions. HMV 'still a great brand' despite collapse
The collapsed music retailer had long been weighed down by "high debts and not enough profit" despite nearly %pound900m of annual sales. HMV, which was founded in 1921, had struggled with "very high debts and not enough profit" despite nearly %pound900m in annual sales, according to The Telegraph's consumer expert Harry Wallop. But the company, which is "still a great brand name" could yet make a comeback if a buyer can be found. "Surely someone has the money and the wherewithal to go and save that brand, and do something with it," he says.
