Dead Space Extraction
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 12:15:06 11/16/09
Dead Space was one of my surprise favorite games last year so I’ve been looking forward to Dead Space Extraction on the Wii – a prequel which charts where all the horror on the cracked planet and in the mining vessel the Ishimura began.
It’s an on-rails FPS but before you think this is just like Time Crisis or House of the Dead , let me explain to you why it’s very much not. Extraction has a much more dramatic approach. There are times where you don’t shoot anything-- the atmosphere builds as you’re taken for a ride through the eyes of a number of survivors in different chapters. You crawl up ladders, shuffle across service hatches and even make leaps of faith through zero gravity. The mining equipment from the first game is in use again as you hack limbs off the monsters, and you’ve also got access to pistols and pulse rifles. You can also slow down enemies and the world around you at times using stasis and fetch weapons, ammo and items using a sort of sci-fi tractor beam type thing.
There are 10 chapters to play through and as you go, you unlock new challenge mode levels and comic books. It may be short but it really is a new gaming experience for me and something I couldn’t put down until I finished the story mode. There are also choices of paths to take from time to time which may encourage playing through the story again and you can play the game in co-op mode and shoot the Xenomorphs with a friend.
The game’s got the best graphics I’ve seen on the Wii and although the action slows down occasionally when there’s lots on screen, it certainly doesn’t wreck the game. Another small complaint is the crosshair. Info about your guns and a Gears of War-style quick reload system are incorporated into it and as a result it’s rather large, sometimes obscuring what you’re actually trying to shoot. Still, it means there’s no HUD on the screen which all adds to the atmosphere.
If you want a game that really sucks you into the action and gives you the creeps at times, give this a go. You’ll definitely enjoy it.
Dead Space Extraction gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

Sonic and the Black Knight - Wii Game Review
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 12:07:02 11/16/09
Today we have Sonic and the Black Knight. This time Sonic gets summoned to the world of King Arthur. Unfortunately, in this game, Arthur is kind of a jerk. Equipped with a sword that bounces up and down and talks to you, you’re off to defeat Arthur. Along the way, you run into other enemies like Lancelot, who are actually other Sonic characters Shadow, Knuckles and Amy with armour on. Tails also appears as a Blacksmith. None of it makes any sense, but what Sonic game does?
When it comes to gameplay it’s a return to running through a level that’s a sort of rollercoaster. You’re almost on rails as you plunge into the screen, moving slightly to the left and right to avoid obstacles and pick up items and fairies and stuff.
Of course, having a sword, you also get to swing it by waving the Wiimote when you encounter enemies. You can also perform rush moves where you lock onto enemies and smash through them one-by-one. Occasionally the running will stop and you’ll have to fight bosses. You either fight them directly using a combination of blocks and sword swings, or have to defeat them using quick time events.
My main problem is that the game almost plays itself at the beginning of the game and then becomes nearly impossible later on as you have to dodge all sorts of perils coming at you at a ridiculous speed.
When it comes to presentation, it’s obvious they’ve put at least some care and attention into the visuals. The environments look great, even if they all kinda look the same, and the opening cut-scene looks fantastic – it’s a pity the story is then explained using story book graphics.
Sonic fans might enjoy this, but for normal people, Sonic and the Black Knight is a mess of uninspired gameplay. Sonic and the Black Knight gets an less than chivalrous 5 out of 10.

The Conduit - Wii Game Review
[LESS INFO] 3 VIEWS | ADDED 16:07:25 11/04/09
n The Conduit, you are Mark Ford, a super-secret agent for “The Trust,” A super-secret government agency that… well, does super secret stuff. The plot is your standard alien conspiracy riff, nothing special, but entertaining at least.
What really makes The Conduit shine is its perfect controls. Well, perfect once you fiddle with them for a while. The control system is incredibly customizable, so with a little work, you can find the perfect settings just for you.
Futuristic weapons abound, and there’s a nifty gadget called the All-Seeing Eye, or ASE for short. You can use the ASE to unlock doors, detect invisible mines, and uncover hidden messages that unlock bonuses and cheats.
Apart from that, The Conduit is a pretty standard run and gun experience. It’s definitely something new if you only own a Wii and are used to Wii Fit and Wii Sports, it doesn’t stand up to FPS greats like Half Life 2 and Halo 3. For example, the enemies are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Sometimes they duck for cover and try to flank you, but other times they just stand there asking to be shot in the face with a high-powered rifle.
Still, it’s a third party shooter for the Wii, and it doesn’t suck! Just for that, you should buy it. Get off the couch, quit bitching about how there aren’t enough hardcore games for the Wii, and go buy it!
The Conduit gets a very good 7 out of 10.

De Blob Review- Wii Game Review
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 15:55:35 10/02/09
You know what I've always wanted to be? A paintball. I even went to Paintball Juliard. Do you know had hard it is to get into Paintball Juliard???
In De Blob, you bounce around Chroma City smashing into buildings and spreading the color love. Just watch out for the evil soldiers of the INKT corporation, who want to keep the city gray and boring. Spoilsports!
You control Blob with the analogue stick of the nunchuck and shake the remote to jump. You get points by painting the landscape, or by doing challenges such as painting a block all the same colour, or ridding the area of enemies.
But watch out! Water can wash off all your color, and ink will kill you, in which case water is actually a good thing. Mostly, though, you don't have to worry about much. You just bounce around like crazy and they the world come alive with color.
The cut scenes are fantastic, the graphics are sharp and the music's great. The music is enhanced as you paint which sort of means you can mix your own music as you mix the paints.
Multiplayer gets even more frenetic , with up to four people competing to see who can taste the rainbow the fastest.
De Blob is a funky and fantastic game, and shines high above all those other guide-a-living-paintball-around-town-while-avoiding-soldiers-with-suspicious-hats games like... well, it's a great game.
De Blob gets an excellent 8 out of 10.

House of the Dead Overkill Review - Wii Game Review
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 15:40:55 10/02/09
What would happen if Quentin Tarantino had directed House of the Dead instead of Uwe Boll? Maybe something like this game.
House of the Dead: Overkill is an on-rails shooter for the Wii with a lot of kitch, a large dose of profanities and some genuinely funny moments as you shoot the heads, arms and legs off hundreds of mutants intent on eating your brains. After some mis-steps in the past -Typing of the dead, I'm looking at you-and a truly horrible movie adaptation, we didn't hold out much hope for this Wii-exclusive sequel
Luckily, House of the Dead: Overkill succeeds in almost every way. The game begins as the cool-as-a-cucumber Agent G and Samuel L Jackson-inspired Isaac Washington investigate a house full of mutants. There they discover an evil plot hatched by the super-corny Papa Caesar and from there, the adventure only ramps up as you visit a circus, a bayou, a prison, a hospital, ride a train and eventually raid an underground base to try to put an end to all this mutant zombie madness. Whew!
Before you even get to fire one shot you'll have a massive smile on your face. The music is fantastic, has very funny dialogue over it and sounds like it's come straight out of Pulp Fiction. We then get introduced to the characters in B-movie style, and it all flows with fun and a large dose of camp.
You'll also notice that Agent Washington says the F word a lot in this game - in-fact this game must hold a Wii record for the most number of swear words. And the gameplay is just as fun as the dialogue. Shooting is very accurate, with body-part specific damage. Get a head shot and the mutants go down in one. Shoot them in the legs and you'll make them crawl. Shoot their arms off and they'll hold the stump and keep coming towards you.
There are also plenty of pickups to shoot including grenades and health, and glowing brains to collect. Mmmm... glowing brains...
Playing through the seven stages won't take you long but it's very replayable and once you've played through once, a director's cut is unlocked which lets you play longer versions of the levels with tougher monsters to pop caps into. The only thing that's disappointing is the easy boss battles. They' just don't pose much of a threat.
But even with the lack of bossy badness, this is the best on-rails shooter I've ever played. It's very tongue in cheek, very funny and incredibly stylish.
House of the Dead: Overkill gets an almost-perfect 9 out of 10.
