Illinois Adventer takes you on a trip to Bishop Hill. In 1846, a group of Swedish immigrants seeking religious freedom left their native land under the guidance of their charismatic spiritual leader, Erik Jansson. The site for their new utopia, later called Bishop Hill, was described to them as a "land of plenty, brimming with milk and honey,” and they struggled to make it so. These Janssonists built a successful communal society based on economic and religious principals. Many of the structures erected during this building campaign still exist. The colony grew and flourished for fifteen years before disbanding in 1861. Today, Bishop Hill is a quiet country village where descendants of the flesh and descendants of the noble spirit of those original colonists still live and strive to make this community a utopia restored. Bishop Hill is a National Landmark Village, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and it is an Illinois State Historic Site. We are the pride of Henry County, Illinois.

Illinois Adventure takes you to the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library welcomes scholars from around the world in their use or inquiries about the collection of rare books at the University of Illinois. The collection represents the entire range of printed material in the West, and extends from more than 1,000 incunables (books printed before 1501), to twentieth-century fine press titles. Over the decades a number of strengths in the collection have emerged due to the efforts of local scholars and librarians in several fields of study. In the past, the Shakespeare and Milton collections were founded as the result of the labors of Professors T. W. Baldwin and Harris F. Fletcher, respectively. More recently, the investigations of Henri Stegemeier in emblem books and A. V. Carozzi in the history of geology have fostered the collections and resulted in separate, published catalogs of the holdings.

Illinois Adventure visits the Wood River Refinery History Museum. Step back in time more than 75 years at the Shell History Museum in Roxana, Illinois. Featuring over 1,000 artifacts and growing, the museum offers a visual review of the refinery's many changes and significant progress from its groundbreaking in 1917 to the present. Exhibits, photo displays and a special videotape tell the story of how the legacy of Shell's Wood River Refinery unfolded over three-quarters of a century. It is a story of extraordinary achievements and remarkable dedication on the part of thousands of Shell people. Today's Wood River Manufacturing Complex is a premier refinery serving the vast Midwest market. Trace the history of Shell Wood River and neighboring communities as you look at early photographs and the many items of interest, including vintage gasoline pumps, glass motor oil bottles, Shell product advertising and city maps. The Shell History Museum was established in 1986 by a small group of retirees who used a small trailer and later an office to sort, categorize and store the historical artifacts. On October 5, 1992, Shell volunteers began renovating an unused research building adjacent to the refinery. Following countless hours of work, the new museum was completed in September 1993 and is staffed by volunteers.

Illinois Adventure goes to Vishnu Springs. Vishnu Springs is a forgotten ghost town tucked into a secluded valley of the LaMoine River, near Macomb, IL. It was founded in 1889 by Darius Hicks, was known through most of its short life as a health resort containing spring water with magical healing properties, and was abandoned in the 1920's after a brief second incarnation as a mobster hangout. A couple of attempts to restore the Capitol Hotel followed, and in the 1970s, Vishnu Springs was briefly a commune for hippie college students from nearby WIU. Today, it sits abandoned in its hidden valley, only a local legend even to most who live nearby. Not much remains, though the fabled waters of Vishnu Spring still flow. The property's present owner (Western Illinois University) specifically instructs would-be caretakers to let it rot. Vishnu Springs is a beautiful, historic place that won't be around much longer without the intervention of those who love it.

Illinois Adventure takes you to the Franklin County Jail Museum. The Historic Jail Museum in Benton serves as the home of the Franklin County Tourism Bureau. This beautifully restored 1905 structure houses memorabilia of the gang era from the days of prohibition, as well as mementos from famous Benton natives, including General John A. Logan, actor John Malkovich, NBA basketball star Doug Collins, and Beatle George Harrison, who visited his sister in Benton in the summer of 1963. Special Mentions: The jail became a symbol for the gang era in Southern Illinois during Prohibition, and became the last stop for Charlie Birger, the last man publically hanged in Illinois on April 19, 1928 for the 1926 murder of West City's mayor, Joe Adams. A new jail was built in 1991, and the old jail was placed on the register of Historic Places on Feb. 1, 1999.

In a May 9, 1982 speech at Eureka College, President Reagan challenged the Soviet Union to a new era of negotiations to reduce nuclear arms -- called START. The speech has been labeled "The Beginning of the End of the Cold War." To commemorate President Reagan's commitment to world peace and the important 1982 speech he presented at Eureka, the College dedicated the Ronald Reagan Peace Garden in May of 2000. The Peace Garden was a gift to the College from Mr. and Mrs. David J. Vaughan of Peoria Heights, Illinois.

Illinois Adventure visits the Forest Park Nature Center. This rugged 540-acre park was acquired in the mid-1950s and later designated as a state nature preserve. The nature center's 7+ miles of hiking trails traverse bluff forestland, an open woodland interspersed with hill prairie openings holding uncommon prairie plant species such as bottlebrush grass, pussytoes and golden Alexander. Chipmunks, squirrels and White-tailed Deer are common inhabitants. Over 100 woodland bird species commonly use the park as migrants, winter visitors or year-round residents. The nature center's bird feeding/watering station is always busy with chickadees, titmice, Whitebreasted Nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers, as well as warblers, vireos and other neotropical species, particularly during migrations. Please contact the nature center for a schedule of its tours and environmental education programs.
