Japan Practices Disaster Prevention Drills
Volunteers take part in disaster prevention drills across Japan to prepare for the threat of natural disasters. Full Story: Firefighters break into a wooden structure in Tokyo, trying to save someone trapped inside. The mock exercise was part of a nationwide drill aimed at teaching people what to do in an emergency. Disaster prevention exercises were held throughout Japan to protect against the threat of earthquake, tsunami and fire. The simulation saw 300 volunteers gathering in Tokyo, putting out fires and helping injured people. Members of the fire brigade also took part, practicing how to save people in damaged buildings. "People are talking about the possibility of a major disaster and doing this is really good. When something does happen, it is totally different between simply witnessing and actually doing it, so this is great." Japan suffered a huge earthquake and tsunami last year, killing scores of people and triggering a nuclear disaster. Officials predict that fire alone could kill more than 9000 in Tokyo if a major earthquake struck the city. Discovering China - Li Bai: China's Immortal Poet
Li Bai was arguably the most accomplished poet of the golden age of poetry in China's Tang Dynasty. Li, known for his romantic style of writing, has come to be known as the immortal poet. Li lived from 701 to 762 AD%mdashspending much of his time travelling around China. He served briefly as a poet at the Hanlin Academy in the capital city of Chang-an, at the request of Emperor Xuanzong. Li did have one habit that some viewed as a defect%mdashhe drank, and drank a lot. Yet when it came to writing poetry, drinking may have been the activity that made Li's poetry so evocative and moving. One story records Emperor Xuanzong summoning Li Bai, while he was having a feast with his favorite consort, Yang Guifei. Li turned up drunk. Court attendants splashed him with water to sober him up, but to no avail. However, once he was handed a writing brush, Li spontaneously composed three songs praising the beauty of Yang Guifei. The emperor was so moved he personally accompanied Li on the flute. Palace life didn't last long for Li Bai. After three years serving the emperor, a jealous eunuch convinced Yang Guifei that Li had been disrespectful towards her in one of his poems. Li was ousted and took to travelling the empire again. Much of Li's poetry alludes to the time he spent on his solitary travels%mdashoften drinking alone with only the moon for company. "Amidst the flowers with a pot of wine, Drinking alone without a companion. Raising the wine cup and toasting the moon, Facing my shadow we have ... Unexplained Blood Testing of China's Prisoners of Conscience
We're concealing the identity of this former prisoner of conscience to protect her family in China. She recently arrived in the United States, after being persecuted in Chinese labor camps for her beliefs. She practices Falun Gong%mdasha spiritual discipline the Chinese Communist Party has been cracking down on since 1999. Human rights groups have documented severe torture and abuse of Falun Gong adherent. This includes the allegation of forced organ harvesting%mdashwhereby detained Falun Gong practitioners are killed for their organs. The organs are then sold for profit to transplant patients. One of the reasons investigators believe forced organ harvesting is taking place is because prisoners are regularly given physical exams and tested for their blood without any concern for their health. This woman said she did not know about the forced organ harvesting allegations while she was in labor camps. But she said the blood tests did indeed happen. [Falun Gong Practitioner]: "While I was being persecuted in the Masanjia Labor camp, and I think one day in the first half of 2008, some medical staff came, and drew our blood in a very professional manner. I asked them why they were taking our blood, what are the tests for? They didn't tell us anything. One of the practitioners refused to cooperate, and seven people held her down in a bed, and covered her head with a pillow. They then drew a jar of blood from her feet, a jar this tall." US Consulate Security Guard in China Pleads Guilty to Espionage
American justice officials have called it a betrayal of his country. Others might just call it an embarrassing attempt at spycraft. Either way, Bryan Underwood's days of selling secrets to foreign powers are likely over, as he faces conviction on federal charges. Mr. Underwood, a former security guard at the United States consulate in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, has pleaded guilty to attempting to sell top-secret information to Chinese security forces, in order to cover his own losses on the stock market. The information he wanted to sell mostly concerned the layout and surveillance plans of the consulate facilities, which are still under construction. Underwood has now confessed to his attempted sale of the information, which would have allowed professional Chinese spies to plant surveillance devices in the compound. He's also confessed to the comedy of errors that resulted when he was unable to close the sale; China's state security bureau was not interested. Underwood's follow up move, of simply leaving a letter containing his offer open on a table in his apartment, also did not result in a successful sale%mdashbut might have been what got him caught. He now likely faces up to 20 years in prison. Child Obesity Reaches 120 Million in China

Child Obesity Reaches 120 Million in China
The number of obese children in China has reached 120 million, according to a report by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This upward trend could have unforeseen impacts in the future. Anti-obesity expert Professor Barry Popkins says that China's child obesity numbers could double in the next decade. He estimates that in the year 2000, obesity indirectly resulted in an economic burden of 3.82% of China's GNP. He predicts that by 2025, that figure could be 8.73%%mdashfrom things like loss in production and medical costs. The report measured the Body Mass Index, or BMI, of children under 18 years old. If the index is 25 or higher, the child is considered overweight. An index of 30 or more is classified as obese. The rise in obesity of Chinese children has been blamed on a combination of a more sedentary lifestyle, higher calorie foods, and the convenience of modern technology. Children in both cities and the countryside are being affected but obesity rates in urban children are higher. Obesity has been on the rise in younger children as well and this trend is also expected to continue. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention says it aims to bring obesity in children down to 8% by 2015. Seven Cheetah Cubs Greet The World At UK Zoo
Watch these seven little bundles of fur tear around their mom, Dubai the Cheetah, at Whipsnade Zoo in the UK. Full script: Dubai the cheetah approaches her meal cautiously. She has seven cubs around twelve weeks old and it's her second set of offspring. Only three cheetah litters have ever been produced in UK zoos, and so Whipsnade Zoo's Marie Brown says this one's particularly valuable. [Marie Brown, Africa Section at Whipsnade, ZooDeputy Team Leader] "Northern cheetahs are extremely rare, rumoured to be less than 250 in the wild so we're very excited for her to breed for a second time. She's bred once before. She had five cubs with her first litter." The cubs have started eating solids, but will stay with their mom for about 18 months before being transferred to other European zoos to take part in breeding programs. [Marie Brown, Africa Section at Whipsnade, ZooDeputy Team Leader] "They'll feed off mum for quite a while but, yeah, they look like adults pretty much before we choose to remove them from mum which will probably be in about a year and a half's time." And until then, the septuplets can practice their sprinting. ICBC records rise in profits, overdue loans
As with most financial and economic information regarding China, the true details are hidden below the surface. This is particularly the case with the Chinese banking system. Latest figures for the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd show a modest net profit rise for the first half of the year, up 13% from a year ago. At the same time though, the ratio of its overdue loans have increased by 7% since the end of last year, highlighting the rising credit risk facing China's major banks. With banks competing for higher deposit ratios, a series of wealth management products with high annual yields were introduced over a year ago. However those products consisted of package loans that are now in many cases "under-performing". Bloomberg report today that overdue loans across China's five biggest banks have risen for the 6th quarter. Chinese Dissident Imprisoned on Yahoo! Info Released
Chinese activist Wang Xiaoning was released today. Wang spent ten years in prison after US internet company Yahoo! gave Chinese authorities information from his email account. Wang's wife, Yu Ling, said he was released early in the morning from Beijing's Municipal Number Two Prison. [Yu Ling, Wife of Activist Wang Xiaoning]: "Of course, he was very happy to come home. After we arrived home at around four o'clock, we didn't sleep, we just talked about his time in prison." Even now, police are stationed outside their apartment. According to his wife, Wang has been warned not to speak to media, and is still deprived of his political rights. Wang was first detained in September 2002 for disseminating articles that (quote) "[opposed] the leadership of Communist Party." He wrote and edited political commentaries, distributing them using Yahoo! email and Yahoo! Groups. In 2007, Yahoo! settled a lawsuit lead by Yu and others alleging it aided authorities in the prosecution of dissidents, and the company made a public apology. [Yu Ling, Wife of Activist Wang Xiaoning]: "Of course I am dissatisfied. Because we were innocent in the first place. We just told the truth, right? We spoke for the good of the country. Ultimately, I feel it was totally unreasonable, to accuse him of subversion of state power. It was a bunch of rubbish. I will never accept it." Yahoo! was criticized by the US Congress for cooperating with Chinese authorities in charging activists, including Wang and others ... Build Your Own Lamborghini
Can you tell a difference between these two cars? If you can't, the answer is one is an authentic Lamborghini, the other is a handmade replica created by this man%mdashWang Jian. He's become a bit of an internet sensation; some are even calling him a hero. The 28-year-old hails from a rural area of China's eastern Jiangsu province. He didn't have much growing up, but he did have a love for cars%mdashfast cars. At 16, he was already training to become a mechanic. [Wang Jian, Mechanic]: "I've always loved sports cars since I was a child. After growing up, I thought of making my own, when I had the circumstances in life and the knowledge. In order to realize this dream, I struggled to learn about this. When I had the right circumstances and the time, I assembled it myself and realized my dream." Like Wang, this car had humble beginnings; the parts came from an old Nissan van and Volkswagen sedan. It's modeled after the incredibly rare Lamborghini Reventon. Only 21 were made. And while it would fetch around $1.6 million in the US, Wang built his for only $9500. [Xu Lingxiang, Neighbor]: "I used to watch him assembling this Lamborghini all day, every day. At first, I couldn't figure out what he was doing. I could only see the frame and structure. Then he bought a lot of iron sheets back, and started cutting and drawing on them. I couldn't tell. I didn't know it was a Lamborghini replica until it was finally all finished. After seeing the finished product, I think it's extremely similar ...
