Full Story: Boxing legend Muhammad Ali receives the Liberty Medal for his humanitarian and civil rights work. His daughter, former professional boxer Laila Ali, presents the award. The Liberty Medal is sponsored by the National Constitution Center, a non-profit organization devoted to the US Constitution. Ali is now 70 and suffering from Parkinson's disease - his wife, Lonnie, addresses the audience on his behalf: [Lonnie Ali, Wife of Muhammad Ali]: "On behalf of Muhammad, let me sincerely state how incredibly honored he is to be here this evening, as the recipient of the Liberty Medal. It is, to be honest, overwhelming, especially given the remarkable group of people who have previously been the recipient of the prestigious award. It is especially humbling for Muhammad, who has said on many occasions, "All I did was stand up for what I believe." The heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist was also an outspoken fighter for religious and civil rights. In 1967 he refused to join the US Army, due to religious beliefs that denounced violence. He was arrested, fined, stripped of his boxing license and title, and found guilty of draft evasion. The battle went all the way to the Supreme Court, which reversed the decision in 1971, ruling that his refusal stemmed from constitutionally protected rights. Ali regained his title in 1974 and retired in 1981. Actor ... From: NTDTV Views: 167 3 ratings Time: 02:35 More in Sports

Guatemala Volcano Erupts, Thousands Evacuated
Dramatic scenes as Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts, sending smoke and ash half a mile into the air. Full Story: Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. Ash and smoke spew into the air, rising half a mile above the crater. The volcano is located just 25 miles southwest of the capital Guatemala City. 8000 people have already been evacuated, according to Guatemala's National Emergency Operations Centre, more commonly known as CONRED. A further 23000 people are awaiting evacuation, reported CONRED. [David De Leon, National Emergency Operations Centre, Spokesperson]: "Up to now and in accordance with the increase (in volcanic activity) that has been seen, it's been necessary to evacuate the communities located in the southwest of the volcano. The communities of Panimache, Santa Sofia and Morelia are the ones being evacuated at the moment. Authorities have declared an orange alert and implemented and installed a command post in San Juan Alotenango, from where arrangements for the population are being made." On that occasion Guatemala City was covered with ash, closing the airport and forcing hundreds of families to evacuate. Anti-Japanese Protests Continue in Beijing
Anti-Japanese protests continued today as more than 100 gathered outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing on Thursday. Protesters held up placards and defaced Japanese flags and punched their fists in the air as they chanted slogans. Long-running territorial disputes flared last month when Japan detained a group of Chinese activists who had landed on an uninhabited island group in the East China Sea. The islands are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Tension increased on Tuesday when Japan, which controls the islands, said it had bought them from a private owner. The row led to anti-Japanese protests in China last month and again this week protests have taken place in cities across China. Individual protesters now say they would not buy Japanese products, others are calling for a wider boycott. Tensions over the islands are likely to harm trade ties between the world's second- and third-largest economies, China's Vice Commerce Minister said on Thursday. Chinese state-run media has said two patrol ships have been sent to reassert the Chinese regime's claim to the islands, but Japan's coastguard said it had not yet seen any Chinese patrol vessels. Reuters Poll: China's Slowdown Extends to Third Quarter Delaying Recovery
China's economy is expected to slow down further this quarter... going below 8 percent. Reuters polled 20 economists who believe the median forecast is 7.4 percent growth in the July to September period compared to the previous year. The survey also predicted a growth of 7.7 percent for 2012, lower than a July poll forecast of 8 percent. Earlier polls in July showed a quicker and stronger upturn with 7.9 percent growth in the third quarter and 8.2 percent in the fourth. The slowdown reflects a lack of urgent policy action for the past two months to bring down the cost of credit. The upcoming leadership transition in the Chinese Communist Party slated for next month is seen as one of the reasons for policymakers' inaction towards monetary easing. Will China Boycott Japanese Products?
China and Japan's territorial dispute over a small group of uninhabited islands may be threatening important trade ties. China's Commerce Ministry said today that trade with Japan could be hurt by the sudden flare-up in tension over the East China Sea. Protests across China have called for a boycott of Japanese products, which are popular with newly-wealthy Chinese consumers. This comes after Japan announced on Tuesday that it's purchasing the Senkaku Islands from a private Japanese owner. A Nissan Motor executive said last week that tensions have hurt sales in China, following recent attacks on Japanese cars during protests. China's Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei has hinted that China's leadership saw nothing wrong with boycotts of Japanese goods. While individual protesters have embraced the boycott, it hasn't yet appeared on a large scale. China is Japan's largest trading partner. In 2011, their bilateral trade grew 14.3 percent in value to a record $345 billion. Congressional Hearing Urges US to Stop Forced Organ Harvesting China
The Chinese regime may have killed tens of thousands of prisoners of conscience for their organs. That's according to the panel of experts and witnesses at a US Congressional hearing on Tuesday. [Chris Smith, US Representative (R-NJ)]: "If this is true, even the powerful fraught legal term 'crimes against humanity' seems inadequate." China's transplant industry boomed in the early 2000s. China's Health Ministry has claimed that about 90% of the 10000 organs transplanted each year come from executed prisoners. On Tuesday, Dr. Damon Noto said those numbers don't add up. Dr. Noto says there are simply not enough prisoners sentenced to death each year to supply that many organs, especially given the need to match blood types, tissues and other factors. Because of these and several other reasons, Dr. Noto says that China's transplant system must have access to a living supply of organs%mdashone that's outside of the regular legal system. [Damon Noto, MD; Spokesman, Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting]: "It has been, through many different investigations, that we now come to believe that it's prisoners of conscience, including Falun Gong practitioners, Tibetans, Uighurs, house Christians who are being killed for their organs. And many of us now believe that the practitioners of Falun Gong may be one of the worst victims, because they are believed by many to comprise the largest population of prisoners of conscience in China." Xi Jinping Mentioned in State Media, Still No Sighting
Rumors surrounding the health of leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping continue to fly today. At the same time, Chinese state-run media has made the first mention of Xi. That mention was by text only. Late last night, local time, state-run media cited Xi as expressing condolences to the family of a veteran Communist Party official who died last week. In Hong Kong, newspaper headlines questioned Xi's health and possible delays to the Communist Party's congress next month, reflecting the concern of the Chinese public. Beijing has still not issued a statement on the condition of the 59-year-old, amidst claims ranging from a bad back, heart trouble, a stroke and a car-crash injury. China's Foreign Ministry maintained a tight lid on the subject today, repeating the answers that it has given at its daily briefings over the last week. Some experts have said that Beijing's silence could indicate some discord behind the scenes. Many doubt Xi is suffering more than a minor ailment, but Beijing's refusal to clarify the situation has begun to emerge as a talking point in global financial markets. Investors are now keeping a close eye on Xi in a year already notable for high political drama. But talk has yet to move markets, which remain absorbed by Europe's debt crisis and China's own economic slowdown. Xi was last seen in public on September 1st, but speculation only took off last week when he skipped meetings with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Singapore's prime minister. This ... Mural Depicting Tibet and Taiwan Independence Gets Attention from Beijing
A US Congressman has slammed the actions of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco after it demanded a private business owner in the state of Oregon remove a mural from his business. David Lin, a Taiwanese-American businessman, commissioned this ten by 100-foot mural outside his store in the city of Corvallis. It has images of Tibetans being beaten and setting themselves on fire in protest of Chinese repression in Tibet. It also portrays Taiwan as a land of hope and freedom. In August, when a former Corvallis resident from China told the Chinese Consulate about the mural, it wrote a letter to the Mayor of Corvallis, requesting to have Mr. Lin remove it. When the city rebuffed the request%mdashciting Mr. Lin's constitutional rights%mdashthe Vice Consul and the Deputy Consul General personally flew out to the small city. This week, US Congressman Peter Defazio, who serves the district Corvallis is in, told the House of Representatives he's appalled by the action of the Chinese consulate. [Peter Defazio, Oregon Congressman]: "I'm shocked, and appalled, that apparently Chinese professional diplomats have failed to read the Constitution of the United States of America before traveling here to represent their country. This represents the basis of our representative democracy, our freedom of speech, and our rights; and it will not be bullied by China or any other overseas interest."
