Venezuelans Voting In New Orleans Disappointed With Chavez Victory
Thousands of Venezuelans travel to New Orleans to vote, but most leave disappointed as Chavez is re-elected. Full Story: Thousands of Venezuelans who live in the United States line up in New Orleans on Sunday, to vote in Venezuela's presidential election. Most expat Venezuelans live in and around Miami, but President Hugo Chavez closed Venezuela's consulate in Miami earlier this year. Around 7000 voters made the long journey to New Orleans to cast their ballot. [Carlos Alves Fernandez, Voter from Coral Springs, Florida]: "Unfortunately, the Venezuelan consulate in Miami was closed by the president for whichever reasons he had in mind, whether (or not) these were diplomatic reasons, so it was very important for this electoral process to have polling stations opened so that we could exercise our right to vote, otherwise the action would have been an impediment to allow us to exercise our right. I believe it is the responsibility of the government that today many people have not had the chance to vote." The expatriate community in the United States is overwhelmingly against the incumbent President Chavez - only 2 percent of Venezuelans in Miami voted for him in the 2006 elections. The number of Venezuelans in America is steadily increasing, with many middle- and upper-class Venezuelans emigrating, to escape rising crime and shrinking job opportunities back home. Many celebrate being able to vote. [Ileana Avendano, Voter from Cape Coral, Florida]: "Today is a celebration ... From: NTDTV Views: 17 3 ratings Time: 01:48 More in News & Politics

Nobel Prize Stirs Controversy
"The Nobel Assembly and the Karolinska Institute have today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2012 jointly to John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent." This year's Nobel Prize is a controversial one and it is rewarded to scientist in the field of stem cell research. John B. Gurdon discovered in the early sixties that he could take an egg cell on a frog and replace the immature cell nucleus with a mature frog intestinal cell nucleus. The modified egg cell grew into a normal tadpole, and the DNA of the mature cell still contained all the information required to grow into all cells of the frog. [G%oumlran Hansson, Secretary Nobel Assembly]: "John Gourdon made a remarkable discovery fifty years ago. That the nucleus of a mature cell contains all the information needed to build any information needed to build any cell in the body." Forty years later in 2006, Shinya Yamanaka discovered that one can reprogram mature stem cells in mice to become stem cells that can become any cell type in the body. [Thomas Perlmann, Professor Karolinska Institute]: "We think this an absolutely fantastic discovery and it has two important components. And one is and this is really important for us it's importance for the basic understanding of how cells become specialist and help us to understand really basic biology and medicine." These stem cells appear to be the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. Stem ... From: NTDTV Views: 133 5 ratings Time: 02:11 More in News & Politics

It was also the sixth consecutive day were Turkish forces launched a retaliatory strike on Syria. A mortar, launched from Syria, landed in the Turkish countryside. Local villagers showed journalists the blast site. Shell casings could be seen in the middle of the cotton field in the district of Hacipasa. [Abdullah Gul, Turkish President]: "We can't expect the situation in Syria to carry on like this. One day for sure there will be a change, but our wish is that this happens before Syria demolishes itself and more blood is shed, and we wish the international community would act more efficiently." Since 2006, international rights groups have accused China's Communist Party of taking organs from prisoners of conscience, the vast majority coming from practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. The United States and the United Nations have both been asked to investigate these claims. According to Taiwan's Department of Health, more than 1700 Taiwanese patients traveled to China for organ transplants between 2000 and 2011.
