Space Shuttle Endeavour Crawls Through Los Angeles
Spectators gawk as the space shuttle Endeavour starts a road trip to its new California home. The 12-mile trip will cost ten million dollars. Full Story: The space shuttle Endeavour sets off on a slow journey through Los Angeles, on its way to retirement at the California Science Center. It's a two-day crawl across 12 miles for the shuttle, which will become a public attraction. But squeezing it along narrow roads is no easy feat. To clear the way, traffic and streets lights have been temporarily removed, power lines shut down and some roads re-enforced to protect against the weight. Four hundred trees have also been felled%mdashalthough the science centre has pledged to plant a thousand more to make up for the loss. The entire project is set to cost ten million dollars. [Joe Grutzik, Spectator]: "I think it's awesome that it's here, it's great. Maybe it'll excite younger kids to look to the stars and try to do something exciting with their lives." [Miro Kroner, Spectator]: "It's a glorious American feature that we have here, just to build something so big and something that marks the US as kind of like a progressive force in space. I think it's worth seeing." The Endeavour flew 25 missions and was taken out of service as NASA's shuttle program came to an end. Salvage Work Continues on Costa Concordia 10 Months After Capsize
Ten months on from the capsizing of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, salvage work is progressing slowly with the onslaught of winter expected to hamper the operation. Meanwhile, lawyers are preparing to resume a pre-trial hearing. Full Story: Salvage work on the capsized Costa Concordia liner is progressing slowing off the Tuscan island of Giglio with the looming threat of wintry weather promising to slow the work even further. Work on the 951 foot-long cruise liner is still in its initial phases. Teams are seeking to stabilize the vessel to prevent it shifting down the rocky ledge it is resting on and plunging into the deep water of the surrounding marine reserve. US firm Titan Salvage and Italian firm Micoperi are handling the re-float and removal of the ship, which is likely to cost at least $300 million and last about a year. And while the logistic of the salvage operation are worked through on the coast, further inland lawyers prepare to discuss evidence in the trial against the Concordia's captain Francesco Schettino, set to resume on Monday. Prosecutors accuse Schettino of causing the disaster on January 13 by bringing the Concordia too close to shore and causing the capsizing of the cruiser. He is under formal investigation in the case, accused of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4200 passengers and crew was complete. Local residents in Giglio are keen for the trial to start and hope to find out what really happened and ... From: NTDTV Views: 354 1 ratings Time: 01:44 More in News & Politics

Alive! Film Plane Disaster Anniversary Rugby Match
Forty years after the tragic Andes' plane crash in which survivors were forced to eat the remains of their dead colleagues, those survivors reflect on the effect of that crash, immortalized in the movie "Alive!" Forty years after a plane carrying an Uruguayan rugby team crashed high in the Andes, survivors gathered in Santiago, Chile to commemorate the anniversary. On October 13, 1972, a chartered aircraft carrying 45 passengers crashed into the mountains when pilots miscalculated their landing position. This was later known as the Andes flight disaster, and is still remembered today. Twenty-nine survived the initial accident but, without food or shelter from the cold, several more soon perished. Rescuers eventually gave them up for dead and survivors were forced to eat their fellow travelers just to survive. Two of the crash survivors set off to get help and eventually ran into Sergio Catalan, a local resident, who alerted authorities. The remaining 16 were rescued 72 days after the initial crash. Catalan said it is sheer joy to see how well they are all doing. [Sergio Catal%aacuten, Chilean Man who Found Survivors]: (Spanish, male) "I'm happy because they're all doing well and they're in shape for another 40 years." The dramatic story of the crash and courageous survival of the passengers was retold in the 1993 movie "Alive." Survivor Eduardo Strauch said his experience on that mountain still teaches him lessons today. [Eduardo Strauch, Survivor of Andes Plane Crash]: (male ... Backers and Attackers of President Mursi Clash in Cairo
On Friday (October 12) opponents and supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi clashed in Cairo, in Tahrir Square. This is the first major incident between the two factions since the Islamist leader took office. The rivals are vying for a piece of the pie to shape a new Egypt after decades of autocracy. A new government is in place following the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year, but the country is still divided. Islamists and liberals disagree over the drafting of the new constitution, a necessity for the new parliament to be elected. Many of the thousands who gathered in Tahrir Square on Friday were also angry at a court ruling this week. Two former officials accused of charging on protesters were let go without punishment. Even before the ruling however, Mursi's opponents had called for protests against the recently elected leader. They are upset at what they say is a failure to deliver on promises in his first 100 days in office. State media quoted the Health Ministry as saying 110 people had sustained light to moderate injuries, but no deaths were reported For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me From: NTDTV Views: 111 3 ratings Time: 01:16 More in News & Politics

The European Union was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Reactions have been mixed across the continent. Full story: The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today (October 12), and reactions have been wildly differing%mdashboth supporting and mocking the decision. In a statement, the Nobel committee said (quote), "The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe." The EU Commission was expectedly elated for the award. [Oliver Bailly, EU Commission Spokesman]: "That is exceptionally good news for Europe, for the Europeans, after so many years and in this time of great difficulties. It is very important to see that the international community recognises the work that has been made to Europe, its contribution to global peace and its unique model when it comes to bringing people together. It is just fantastic news and we want to share it with all Europeans today." European commission President Jose Manuel Barroso received a big bouquet of flowers to celebrate the prize. However, others were wary of the committee's decision. There has been some outcry over the announcement, as the EU has taken heat for an economic crisis. Czech President Vaclav Klaus may have been the most outspoken leader about the award. [Vaclav Klaus, Czech President]: "I think this is a tragic mistake. US Warns Against Fake Chinese Airbags
Yet another product from China is raising safety concerns in the US. In a recent test of Chinese made airbags, the devices that are meant to protect travelers either didn't inflate, inflated partially, or blew up. US Transport authority, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has now issued warnings for these air bags. So far no injury resulting from the fake airbags has been reported. These substandard Chinese-made airbags look just like the real ones, but US consumers can get them at about a quarter of the regular price. The NHTSA warns that if you bought an airbag for less than $400, there is a chance it could be a fake. It also advises that if you bought a used car recently or had your airbag replaced at an auto shop not associated with a dealership, you could be at risk too. Vehicles labeled salvaged, rebuilt, or reconstructed are also suspect, especially if sold within the last three years. Police have arrested a few dealers peddling the fake airbags, but thousands of the knock-offs have already been sold. The US government estimates about 0.1% of US cars have been affected, which is about 240 thousand vehicles. Bo Xilai Moved to Beijing's Luxury Qincheng Prison: The Epoch Times
Disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai has been moved to a luxury prison in Beijing, according to the Epoch Times Newspaper, citing an internal source. If the information is true, then senior leaders of the Communist regime appear to be a step closer to closing the book on Bo's case. The former Chongqing Party Secretary is facing accusations of abuse of power, covering up his wife's murder of a British businessman, engaging in inappropriate sexual relations and other unspecified crimes. International rights groups have accused Bo of human rights atrocities, including the forced harvesting of organs from prisoners of conscience. The Epoch Times reports Bo was moved to Beijing's Qincheng Prison on October 7th. That's the same place where his wife, Gu Kailai is serving her suspended life sentence. The prison is known for holding senior officials and offering relative luxury and comfort compared to ordinary prisons. Chinese authorities have not announced a date for Bo's impending trial, though many analysts expect it to come before November 8th, when the Communist Party is set to hold its 18th Party Congress and announce a new line-up of leaders. Chinese Authorities "Lose Out" by Tokyo IMF Snub
International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has criticized a decision by China's communist authorities not to send representatives as planned to the IMF's meeting in Tokyo this week. The move by China comes amidst a tense dispute with Japan over maritime territory, and has been seen as a deliberate snub. Yet, according to Ms. Lagarde, it is only China which will "lose out" as a result of the decision not to attend. Calling the region critical to global economic recovery, she and other world economic officials have called for a defusing of the tensions between East Asia's two great powers. China's economy, too, has recently seen a sharp slowdown. Yet China's foreign minister has just publicly stated the official position that the no-show was "appropriate." Chinese authorities have dispatched lower level representatives in place of the high-level officials who were scheduled to attend. Yet progress in the talks is likely to be impeded by the lack of high-level dialogue.
