Wen Jiabao Signals Economic Stimulus
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has signaled for more economic stimulus, after disappointing indicators for July. Wen told state-run media on Wednesday that, there is, (quote) "growing room for monetary policy operation." He had recently come under criticism for being too conservative and not reacting to the severity of the Chinese economic slowdown. Wen said adjustments can now be made after July figures on decreasing inflation were released. While Asian stocks reacted positively with an upswing of 0.05% in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, Chinese stocks continued a two week decline with the Shanghai Composite index down 0.3% , closing at 2112.20 on Wednesday. Wen also signaled more tough times ahead. He warned on Wednesday, that "the foundation for economic stabilization is still unstable, and that economic hardships may continue for some time." Wen's bleak outlook comes as the figures for inbound FDI for July dropped by 7.58 billion US dollars, or 8.7%, from June. No New Solutions on Syria after China's Meeting with Assad's Envoy
China's Foreign Minister met with an envoy of Syrian President Bashir al-Asaad. Bouthaina Shaaban arrived in Beijing earlier this week. Details of her Thursday meeting with Minister Yang Yiechi came through a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement. In it, Yang urged the Syrian government and the opposition to end the violent conflict that has gripped Syria since March last year. The Chinese regime and Russia have blocked key measures by the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on Assad, in a bid to force him to step down. The Chinese regime indicated it could also meet with the Syrian opposition. Yang did not offer any new solutions on Syria's ongoing crisis after Thursday's meeting. Japanese Embassy Under Tight Security in Beijing
The Japanese embassy in Beijing has a heavy layer of security today, as protests rage outside the building. The protests are in response to Japan detaining 14 Chinese activists who landed on one of the disputed Diaoyu islands yesterday. Japanese media said today that Japan will deport the group if they have not committed any other crimes. Tokyo lodged a complaint with the Chinese ambassador over the intrusion. At the same time Beijing demanded the activist's immediate release. Beijing and Tokyo have conflicting claims over the uninhabited islets, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. The islands are thought to have large oil deposits underneath them. Tensions over the territorial dispute have escalated in the past months. In July, the Japanese government announced it is considering purchasing the islands from its owners to end the dispute. Hong Kong-based China analyst, Willy Lam, believes tensions could climb from here, but rules out any military action. [Willy Lam, Adjunct Professor, Chinese University] "I don't think this will lead to military confrontation because I think there's a good agreement between two governments to avoid military clashes at all costs. However, I think the climate will worsen, the confrontation will certainly be scaled up in the forthcoming months." The United States, meanwhile, has called for calm. [Victoria Nuland, US State Department Spokeswoman]: "We expect the claimants to resolve the issue through peaceful means ... Any kinds of ... Wang Lijun's Unreported Background
Most people know Wang Lijun, the police chief in Chongqing who fled to the US consulate in February, as just that a Police Chief. But very few knew that he was also involved in something very different to police work, something more a medical doctor would do. No, Wang himself is not a doctor and has no medical degree, but from 2003 through 2008, Wang was not only the Party Secretary of the Jinzhou Public Security Bureau in Liaoning province, he was also in charge of the police department's so-called On-Site Psychology Research Center. There he proudly oversaw thousands of organ transplants from executed prisoners, and personally conducted psychological experiments on them. In this episode of China Focus, we discuss why this side of Wang Lijun is something that China's state-run media are now trying to downplay--because it may relate to the scandal involving ousted Chinese official Bo Xilai and his wife, Gu Kailai. China Focus - Gu Kailai, Bo Xilai, and China's Black Market Body Trade
You've probably heard the controversy surrounding the international exhibitions that display plastinated human bodies%mdasha controversy over where the bodies came from. Well now, an inside source has told NTD that Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai were involved in facilitating the sale of unclaimed human bodies%mdashpeople who did not give consent. We're talking about Bo Xilai, the ousted Chinese Communist Party secretary, and his wife Gu Kailai, who was recently tried for murdering a British citizen. So we set out to verify this information. We'll tell you what we know, what's unconfirmed but is logically the most likely, and what still needs further investigation. The technique for plastinating human bodies was developed by this guy: German doctor Gunther von Hagens. He visited the city of Dalian in China's Liaoning Province in 1993, after contacting Sui Hongjin (隋鸿锦), an assistant professor at Dalian Medical University. The two built a relationship. And in December 1996, von Hagens accepted a visiting professorship at Dalian Medical University. A few years later, von Hagens set up a plastination company called von Hagens Dalian Plastination Ltd, and hired Sui as his general manager. There's conflicting info about when von Hagens founded the company, though. Von Hagens' Body Worlds website claims it was in 2001, but company registration documents show that the Dalian city government approved the company in August 1999%mdashwhile Bo Xilai was still mayor of Dalian. Spanish "Robin Hood" Mayor Loots Supermarket
A Spanish mayor who became a cult hero for staging robberies at supermarkets and giving stolen groceries to the poor set off on a three-week march on Thursday that could embarrass the government and energise anti-austerity campaigners. [Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, Mayor of Marinaleda]: "We will occupy banks because they are responsible for this crisis and some of them (bankers) should be in jail. The attorney general should intervene as well as Mrs Becerril (the ombudsman), but that is unlikely." Seven people have been arrested for taking part in the two raids, in which labour unionists, cheered on by supporters, piled food into supermarket carts and walked out without paying. Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, regional lawmaker and mayor of Marinaleda, stood outside the supermarket. Gordillo, who has been referred to as a Spanish Robin Hood, has political immunity as an elected member of Andalusia's regional parliament, but says he would be happy to renounce it and be arrested himself. His critics, however say he cannot go breaking the law like Robin Hood and at the same time be the Sheriff of Nottingham, in reference to his public post. On Thursday, Gordillo and about 500 labourers supporting his cause began a trek from Jodar, the town with Andalusia's highest unemployment rate, planning to march across the region in blistering summer heat to persuade other local leaders to refuse to comply with government reforms designed to cut spending. Baby Elephant Photoshoot at Berlin Zoo
A new Asian elephant calf, born just on Sunday, has already become the star of Germany's Berlin Zoo. On Wednesday, staff held a photoshoot for the calf named "Anchai" at the tender age of three-days. Already a metre high, the calf already weighs a healthy 350 pounds. Dr. Andreas Ochs, the elephant curator at Berlin Zoo, said the birthing process went well with mother Pang Pha. [Dr. A. Ochs, Elephant Curator]: (Male German) "The birth took place without any incident. After all, Pang Pha is an experienced elephant mother. This is her fourth calf. The birth was over at 12:15 AM and at 12:45 AM the little one was already standing on its feet." Unfortunately, Anchai's three siblings all died of elephant herpes, which the zoo vet said is incurable. However, all signs point towards to Anchai being healthy. [Dr. A. Ochs, Elephant Curator]: (Male German) "At 160 kilos, it's pretty heavy and at the same time, very agile and alert. The fact that it was already on its feet almost alone after only half an hour is an indication that it's very strong which makes us hopeful for the future." Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet Released
On Thursday, Samsung released its new flag tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1, to the excitement of some potential consumers in the company's South Korea home. Based off the Galaxy Note mobile phone device, which was large enough to seem like a miniature tablet, the new 10.1-inch Android tablet packs a 1.4-GHz quad-core Exynos processor and 2GB of RAM. Running Ice Cream Sandwich, the device is sure to draw in graphic designers and artists, as it has been combined with Wacom stylus tech. Jung Dae-Woong, who was testing the Galaxy Note, was impressed with the tablet's innards. [J. Dae-Woong]: "The new product's processing speed is much faster than iPad or previous Galaxy tablet model, which was the most impressive thing to me. Also I like it that the product has many more functions than the mobile phone model of Galaxy Note." Samsung surely hopes to rival the iPad with its newest tablet. The new release comes during a big patent case between Samsung and Apple in the US, where Apple has accused the South Korean tech firm of copying many patents from its iPhone and iPad devices. Samsung has a long way to go to catch up to its Cupertino-based competitor; according to research firm IHS iSuppli, Apple sold 28.8 million iPads between January and June, giving it a 64.4% market share, compared to a 9.9% held by SAmsung. Pricing options are $500 for the 16GB version and $550 for 32GB. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on ... Taiwan's Ma Ying-jeoh Signals Further Relations with China
After signing a long-awaited investment pact with China, Taiwan's government is signaling further moves to deepen cross-straits relations. Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeoh this week said the two sides should consider setting up reciprocal representative offices. Taiwan currently has one tourism office in Beijing. The issue was brought up last week during official talks between Taiwanese and mainland representatives, according to Taiwanese media. Ma Ying-jeoh said on Tuesday the issue should be considered, given the level of cross-strait trade. It stands at 160 billion US dollars. US-based author and economics analyst Gordon Chang says the dependency Ma has on the Mainland may be misplaced. [Gordon Chang, Economics Analyst]: "The real problem for Taiwan though is that it sees its economy as more tied with China's but unfortunately China's economy right now is going through some very severe difficulties, much worse than Beijing is willing to admit, which means Taiwan's economy will be adversely affected." Ma Ying-jeoh's push for more integration with China has been opposed in Taiwan. Many there see the Chinese regime's goal of unifying Taiwan as a threat to the island's democratic system. But Chang says as cross-strait interaction increases, Taiwan has started to influence mainland citizens, particularly Chinese exchange students. [Gordon Chang, Economics Analyst]: "Many of them have come to Taiwan and the first thing they do is go on the Internet to see things that are ... PETA Dresses Model in Lettuce in Hanoi
People in Hanoi, Vietnam, were told to go vegetarian through a slightly unusual, albeit attractive, method. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals dressed a model in lettuce to draw attention to their cause. And the message of the day: save the planet by going vegetarian. Though PETA is usually more concerned with the suffering of animals, according to the organization, consumption of meats, eggs, and dairy products is a leading cause of global climate change. However, there are relatively few vegetarians in Vietnam, in part due to their culture. Even the model, a student at the Financial Institute, is not a full vegetarian. [Dam Hong Loan, 4th Year Student]: "It has always been in Vietnamese culture that people are only vegetarian if they practice Buddhism. But nowadays, some, myself for example, have been consuming a lot of meat. That's why moving to vegetarian is very difficult. I am slowly moving to having a vegetarian-diet once a week." The typical Vietnamese diet consists of a lot of meat, a major source of the population's nutritional needs. There are some people who eat the occasional vegetarian meal, but it is more of a stress-relief dietary measure. They are generally not thinking of animal suffering, PETA's main cause. Nevertheless, Jason Baker, the Vice President of PETA, is encouraged with his method. [Jason Baker, Vice President of PETA]: "It is a fun, exciting way to talk about a serious message, and that's 'going vegetarian.' So hopefully people will ... Celeb News: Jodie Foster Defends Kristen Stewart, Pussy Riot Supporters Protest In Moscow
Kristen Stewart is having an up and down week. Her "Panic Room" costar Jodie Foster wrote an on-line op-ed piece in defense of the actress. Foster criticizes the current culture of celebrity obsession and leaves encouraging words for Stewart, saying that the gossip will 'eventually blow away.' On the other hand, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Universal Pictures is considering shelving a potential 'Snow White' spinoff with Stewart, instead focusing on a movie revolving around Chris Hemsworth's 'Huntsman.' Universal, however, has released a statement saying that they have made no decisions about Stewart or the future of the franchise. Security guards scuffled with masked protesters who demonstrated outside Moscow's main cathedral on Wednesday in support of three members of the Pussy Riot punk band who are on trial for staging an irreverent protest at the same church. A Moscow court is set to issue a verdict on Friday. The defendants have been held in jail for five months. Shia LaBeouf says he's quitting big budget movies. The "Transformers" star told The Hollywood Reporter that he's done with the Hollywood studios and is redirecting his career in favor of indie films. LaBeouf has made similar comments before but his upcoming films seem to live up to the comments. His next film, this summer's "Lawless," is an indie project that he helped produce. Ancient Aquatic Tomb Discovered in Peru
Archaeologists have discovered an aquatic tomb in northern Peru on Tuesday they say belongs to an important noble from the Lambayeque culture, buried here in the 12th or 13th century AD The tomb was discovered at the Chotuna-Chornancap archaeological site about 8 miles west of the city of Chiclayo on Peru's northern coast. The figure, whose sex has not yet been determined, was buried with dozens of offerings, including an ornate chest plate made of gold, silver and copper, signifying a high rank in the Lambayeque culture. The figure was found buried below the only known female from the culture to have been entombed in the culture's unique and elaborate style, the religious figure known as the priest of Chornancap. The culture's most famous descendent is the Lord of Sipan, dubbed the "Tutankhamen of the Americas," who was discovered just a few miles from here in 1987 and hailed from the ancient Moche culture, which flourished on Peru's coast from about 100 AD to 600 AD. The newly found tomb was lined with precious metals and stones like the blue lapis lazuli, Caribbean seashells valued in the ancient culture and a number of ceramics. All these items are a testament to the figure's rank, but more interesting perhaps, is the fact that the noble was buried with three other figures found here. [Fausto Saldana, Archaeologist]: "We also have three other companions which up to now have been found at the lower extremities of the figure. We also have the chest plates which are made ... Whitney Houston Exhibition Opens At The Grammy Museum, Los Angeles
Fans of Whitney Houston are in for a treat as The Grammy Museum unveiled an exhibition featuring her gowns and costumes on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Notable items on display include the white, beaded gown she wore to receive three Grammys at the 1994 Grammy Awards, various other outfits she wore on different tours, as well as personal memorabilia such as photos and letters. Many of Houston's family members thanked The Grammy Museum for putting together the retrospective on the late singer's life. [Pat Houston, Whitney Houston's Sister-In-Law and Former Manager]: "All of us in her family are honored and thank you, not from the bottom of our hearts, but from the top of our hearts. This is truly, truly overwhelming, but we are really, very overjoyed, that we are here today to represent and be a part of such a wonderful and splendid career of such a beautiful and talented woman." Houston's soaring voice lifted her to the top of the pop music world, but years of drug abuse led to her personal decline. She was found dead in a hotel bathtub on February 11 at the age of 48. Over the course of a 30-year career in which she established herself as one of the most-admired and influential singers of her time, Houston won six Grammys, 30 Billboard awards and 22 American Music Awards. Garryowen, Montana, or more historically well-known as the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn, is being auctioned off on Wednesday. Bidding starts at $250000 for the town that now has a population of two. Sitting just off of I-90 highway, it is a tourist destination sitting on the Crow Indian Reservation, about a 40 minute drive from the Montana-Wyoming border.
