China's Employment Suffers Under Economic Woes
China's job market is feeling the heat from the cooling economy, with slower job growth recorded since April. Yang Ziming, the Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, delivered the message today (November 12), at the sidelines of the 18th Party Congress. [Yang Ziming, Vice Minister of Human Resources and Social Security] "The growth of newly added jobs in cities has been narrowing since April, while job vacancies have dropped with higher registered unemployment numbers." Seven million college graduates entered the job market this year, amidst the shrinking job market. Yang says rural and migrant workers are also competing for a share of the pie. China's export-dependent economy continues to rely heavily on lower-skilled laborers. Slowing export demands from the European and US markets have prompted manufacturers to cut output, or simply closing up shop, leading to job losses. Yang said Chinese authorities would boost labor-intensive industries, and focus on emerging industries for job growth. Retailers in Love With Singles Day
November 11, or 11-11, is a very special day for millions of young Chinese looking for that special someone that has been missing in their lives. Singles Day is a Chinese pop culture holiday. In preparation on Saturday night in Beijing, over 100 young hopefuls gathered at a trendy restaurant, hoping to shed their singles tag. [Kong Yan, Participant]: "I think it's a good platform to know more friends. We share the same or similar values, and [it's] easy to get close to each other." Not everyone feels that being single is a problem, but many Chinese do feel some urgency to form a romantic partnership. Online matchmaking and dating is very popular, but some think you need a bit more to commit. [Kong Yan, Participant]: "Actually website is more and more universal in this world, and it's really a good way and a more convenient way of making friends. But personally, I think if you want to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend that is not enough. This is just a beginning, I think. You can't know a person so well only on the website." TV programs like "If You Are The One", which has a viewing audience of over 50 million, are popular in China, but perhaps only for entertainment value. [Wei Haoyue, Volunteer]: "For some people, it's a good way to sell themselves and their companies. But for me, I don't want to go to that kind of TV program, because I think it's too commercial." Singles Day, which is like a Chinese version of Valentine's Day, has become a huge commercial venture that ... From: NTDTV Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 02:16 More in News & Politics

Honored in Hong Kong, Imprisoned in China
An author honored in Hong Kong, imprisoned in China. Author Shen Liangqing was recognized on Saturday for his social contributions at a press conference in Hong Kong. But the same book he is being honored for has riled Chinese officials, and he's been placed under house arrest. [Shen Liangqing, Author]: "The Communist Party authorities and the Hefei City police have been using all means to harass me, to stop me from coming to the Hong Kong book press conference. They came to my home again at 10 this morning, and forced me to go out to eat, but I persistently refused." Shen's book is called Shuanggui: A Prosecutor's Investigation Report. "Shuanggui" is the extra-legal process the Chinese Communist Party uses to punish Party members. It can involve psychological and physical torture. According to Radio Free Asia, Shen Liangqing himself was a former prosecutor in Hefei City, Anhui Province. There, he saw the shuanggui system in action. His book details its illegality and the human rights abuses that go on behind closed doors. The Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection carries out the shuanggui system. The Commission metes out punishment within the Party and exists outside the judicial system. Commission chief, He Guoqiang, pressured publishing houses in China to reject the book. At least one did. According to the spokesman for the book's current Hong Kong publishing house, Shen's book scared officials. [Chen Yulin, Spokesman, Publishing House ... Protests Sweeping Tibet as 18th Party Congress Continues
As the Chinese Communist Party began its 18th Congress last week, thousands of Tibetan students rose up in protest against communist repression. On Friday and Saturday, in Rebgong county northeastern Tibet, over five thousand students took to the streets shouting slogans as they marched through town to Dolma Square where they were met by more protesters. Prayers were then held for a 23-year-old Tibetan mother who self-immolated on Friday. On Saturday a 19-year-old Tibetan died after setting himself on fire, tragically bringing the number of self-immolation deaths to eight last week alone. Other protests were held in various universities and townships, demanding equality and for the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet. Exiled Tibetan political leader Dr. Lobsang Sangay says the increasing number of self-immolations and protests are signs that Tibetans are becoming more desperate. Footage from China's state TV last week showed a buildup of Chinese troops in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Soldiers were filmed watching the opening day of the 18th Party Congress from the vicinity of Potala Palace, the home of the exiled Dalai Lama. Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden says, (quote) "This demonstrates how uneasy the Chinese state is at this time of transition with protests against Chinese occupation sweeping across Tibet. Broadcasting footage of Chinese military personnel so close to a location of such importance to Tibetans is clearly intended to intimidate." The exiled Dalai Lama ... Chinese Officials to Keep Assets a Secret, For Now
Two senior Chinese leaders say they are open to the idea of making officials declare their financial assets. Wang Yang, the Party chief of southern Guangdong province, and his Shanghai counterpart, Yu Zhengsheng spoke during the 18th Party Congress in Beijing. Their statements alongside warnings from Chinese leader Hu Jintao that corruption could spell the end of the communist party. Wang and Yu are both up and coming leaders vying for a spot in the ruling Politburo. Wang told reporters on Friday (November 9) that Guangdong was "exploring" ways to publish assets of officials. Yu claims Shanghai already has an internal system, but admits public disclosure is required. [Liu Kaiming, Executor Director, Shenzhen Institute of Contemporary Observation] "I feel that regardless of how much they write or talk about combating corruption, it isn't enough. A lot of measures can't be implemented. The most important step to take is to publish the assets of officials." Scandals involving Chinese officials using their positions to generate massive fortunes have become a source of social discontent. This year, Chinese Internet users have honed in on officials who own luxury items or real estate that should be beyond their pay grade. [Mr. Huang, Hangzhou Resident] "Without supervision, any so-called political reforms will never solve the root of the problem. The police officer that owns multiple properties is a perfect example. Brazilian Artists Compete for Cover of New Madonna Album
An exhibit showcasing the work of thirty Brazilians artists opened last Friday as they compete for the cover of Madonna's new album "Superstar". The cover will be chosen by Madonna herself with the help of online voters, who can vote till mid December. Before coming up with their final works, the artists went through a month long graffiti workshop to learn new techniques and share ideas. Their teacher was Brazilian artist Binho Ribeiro who helped them choose their best work for the contest. Luis Vicentini, a 26-year-old artist who took part in the project, said it was more of a learning experience than a competition. [Luis Gustavo Vicentini, Graffiti Artist]: "I don't see this much as a competition; it was more like a friendly collective experience. There was no feeling of competitiveness between the artists." Madonna's final decision will be announced in December, when she comes to Brazil to promote her new album "MDNA." Madonna's art director, Giovanni Bianco, also guided the artists through the final stages of the workshop, to give them a better idea of the pop singer's style. The exhibit will also travel to other Brazilian cities before the final cover is chosen. Russian Grandmother Kills Wolf with an Axe
A Russian grannie kills a wolf that attacked her with an axe. Full story: Call it a reversal of the "Little Red Riding Hood." When a 56-year-old grandmother in southern Russia was attacked by a wolf, she killed it with an axe. Aishat Maksudova is part of a village in the Dagestan region. She was herding cows and sheep when she heard one of the calves cry. It was being attacked by a wolf, and the pensioner rushed to shoo the wolf away. When the wolf decided to attack Maksudova in turn, she fought back. [Aishat Maksudova, Attacked by Wolf]: "I was not even frightened. I stood like this, holding an axe like this. And the wolf with an open mouth suddenly jumped on me. Jumped like that. The wolf clawed into my leg, and I wanted to hit him with the axe." The two engaged in a dire fight. [Aishat Maksudova]: "When I raised my arm up like this, the wolf was just holding my hand. Trying to claw my hand. I wanted to open his mouth and put my fist all the way there, all the way to his throat. But I could not open him. So I just left my hand, and the wolf was just clawing into it, pulling on it, pulling away like this. And then I took the axe and hit him on his head." The grandmother won the battle. Stunned villagers used their cellphones to record the dead wolf with a bloodied face from Maksudova's blow. In turn, some villagers have begun practicing with axes. Malala Inspires Day of Action and Education for Girls
The United Nations instituted 'Malala Day' after Pakistani girl Malala Yousafzai, who stood up against Taliban edicts banning educating girls. Full story: UN officials on Saturday declared that the day would be dedicated to Malala Yousufzai. Malala Day is exactly one month after the 15-year-old girl was shot by the Pakistan Taliban. She had been targeted for speaking out against the insurgency and going refusing to stay away from school. She is now recovering in a British hospital. In the days following the shooting, Yousufzai became an international icon and world leaders pledged to support her campaign for girls' education. Holding posters of Yousufzai, the children performed a tableau depicting the shooting, and chanting: "I am Malala". Tens of thousands of Britons have called on the government to nominate Yousufzai for a Nobel Peace Prize. On Friday (November 9), former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown presented a petition to the Pakistani President, urging him to prioritize education for boys and girls. The petition was signed by over 855 thousand people from across the world. It calls on the Pakistani government to roll out a massive education stipend program for girls across Pakistan. Indian Artists Paint Images of Gods to Save Trees
Dozens of artists in India's eastern Bihar state are painting roadside trees and their leaves with colourful stories from Hindu epics, hoping to save the region's already critically sparse greenery. Call it a new tactic for those trying to protect the environment. Artists in the Bihar state of eastern India are painting trees with depictions of Hindu stories in an attempt to protect the region's greenery. The campaign began in Madhubani, a district in northern Bihar known for its cultural awareness. It resulted in hundreds of untended roadside trees being covered in colorful, elaborate artwork. Now, trees and their leaves show scenes from classics including the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with other simpler messages. The hope is that the artwork will deter deeply-religious locals from cutting down the trees, out of fear from incurring the wrath of the deities. There were doubts about the sustainability of the project, and there were initial objections and concerns in the beginning. However, having started in September, the project is still going on strong, especially after having attracted international attention. According to state records, the forest coverage in the state is under seven percent. The government is also looking to help out; it plans to plant 250 million saplings over the next five years. Syria Opposition Groups Strike Unity Deal
Syria's opposition groups agree to a broad, inclusive coalition to overthrow President Assad. Full story: Syrian opposition leaders struck a hard-won deal on Sunday under intense international pressure to form a broad-based coalition to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. Delegates at the meeting in Qatar say the new coalition will ensure a voice for religious and ethnic minorities, as well as the rebels fighting on the ground. Minorities in Syria have so far largely backed the authorities, fearing the consequences of a Sunni majority takeover. Also, the rise of extremism and sectarian violence in Syria has raised concerns that arms and funding are not reaching the intended people in the conflict. It is hope that the new coalition will help solve these problems. The new group is called the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, and will be led by Mouaz al-Khatib. Khatib is an Islamist moderate who has previously made speeches together with Christians and Alawites. The deputies are Riad Seif, who proposed the initiative, and Suhair al-Atassi, a female activist.
