China Focus - Loida Lewis on the Philippines and the South China Sea
The Spratly Islands and the Scarborough Shoal have been subject of big disputes between China, the Philippines, and other southeast Asian nations. Whoever controls the South China Sea%mdashor the "West Philippine Sea" as Manila is now calling it%mdashcontrols key shipping lanes as well as offshore oil and natural gas deposits. Last month, the conflict escalated when the Chinese navy sent a garrison to the Scarborough Shoal. Joining host Shelley Zhang on China Focus to discuss the issue is a woman who The Philippine Daily Inquirer called "China's Newest Public Enemy Number One" for her role in calling for a boycott of made-in-China goods: Loida Nicolas-Lewis, the national chair of US Pinoys for Good Governance. Tibetans Prostrate in Front of UN Office in New Delhi
Exiled Tibetans chanted prayers and prostrated themselves towards the gate of the United Nations Information Center in New Delhi on Wednesday. They called on the UN to put immediate pressure on the Chinese regime to end its repressive policies and accept responsibility for the recent self-immolations in Tibet. The demonstrators traveled around 500 meters to reach the gate of the UN office. They brought memorandums with them to submit to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay. Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsewang Rigzin said the demonstration was a traditional Tibetan prostration campaign. [Tsewang Rigzin, President, Tibetan Youth Congress]: "Normally we offer prostrations in front of God and today we are prostrating in front of the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi to appeal the United Nations to immediately intervene and pressure the Chinese government to hold them accountable because of all the self-immolations inside Tibet. 51 Tibetans have set themselves on fire so far and China is the one who is responsible for it." Tsewang called the present situation in Tibet a (quote) "hell on Earth". He said a hunger strike conducted by Tibetans in New York during March of this year was called off after the UN promised to directly engage with the Chinese regime and send representatives to Tibet. However, since six months had passed and no UN delegation had been sent, with the situation in Tibet worsening by the day ... From: NTDTV Views: 21 4 ratings Time: 02:01 More in News & Politics

Ex-Rugby Players in Thai Elephant Polo Tournament
Former members of New Zealand's rugby team played elephant polo against defending champions Audemars Piguet in a tournament opening match in Thailand on Thursday. Elephant riders known as mahouts gather before the match to pay homage to the animals with a holy water blessing. The Thai King's Cup tournament is made up of 16 international teams. Due to the size of elephants, each team has only three players. The rules are simple and similar to regular polo. Organizers say the proceeds from the event will be donated to organizations involved in elephant welfare in Thailand. [James Manclark, President, World Elephant Polo Association]: "The goal is to raise money for the elephants, the street elephants of Thailand. So far, we've raised a lots of money from this event which is given directly to elephants." The Audemars Piguet team is famous in Thailand because its founding member, Christopher Stafford, brought elephant polo to the country in 2001. Former All Blacks rugby team member Charles Riechelmann, in his second year on the elephant polo pitch, says the game is harder than he thought. [Charles Riechelmann, Former All Blacks Team Member]: "It's very difficult, not nearly as easy as I thought it's going to be. It's very hard and also trying to hit the ball all the time and it's hot. But it's not too bad." Various former All Blacks team members have been taking part in this elephant tournament since 2006. Defending champions Audemars Piguet win the match on Thursday with a ... Skeletal Remains Could be King Richard III's
Archaeologists from the University of Leicester uncover remains that could be those of England's 15th century King Richard III. Archaeologists have been searching for the remains of England's King Richard III. This Wednesday they may have found something as they dug under a city centre parking lot. King Richard III was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in central England in 1485. His bones then reportedly ended up in a Franciscan friary, now located under a car park in the centre of Leicester. Richard III is one of just a few English kings whose final resting place is unknown. A team from the city's university began excavating the site last month. They say they have discovered a skeleton with wounds, they think from combat. The bones were found in good condition in the choir area of the friary's church. This was documented in historical records to be Richard III's burial place. [Richard Taylor, Director of Corporate Affairs] "The skeleton on initial examination appears to have suffered significant perimortem trauma, near-death trauma, to the skull which appears to be consistent, although is not certainly caused by an injury received in battle. A bladed implement appears to have cleaved part of the rear of the skull." A barbed metal arrowhead was also found between vertebrae of the skeleton's upper back. [Richard Taylor, Director of Corporate Affairs] "We are not saying today that we have found Richard III. Our focus is shifting from archaeological excavation to laboratory ... Egypt Clashes Violence Surrounds US Embassy In Cairo
Violence directed at the US Embassy in Cairo continues, as Egyptian protesters attack a police vehicle protecting the compound. Full Story: Violence continues in North Africa as protesters in Egypt clash with police protecting the US Embassy. The US Ambassador to Libya was killed Tuesday night when Islamist militants attacked the US consulate in Benghazi. The violence in both Egypt and Libya has been linked to a low quality US made YouTube video that insults the Prophet Mohammed. But suspicion is growing that the death of the US diplomat in Libya was in fact an organized attack by an Islamist group. The violence in both north African countries began on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington. Clashes in Egypt intensified on Thursday when protesters attacked a police vehicle. Egyptian president Mursi said in in a recorded televised address he supports peaceful protests, but not attacks on embassies. The situation will test Mursi's handling of ties with the United States. "State Organs" Tops Bestseller List in Winnipeg, Canada
The book "State Organs: Transplant Abuse in China" was published in July with contributions from a dozen specialists in the field of organ transplantation. The book, co-edited by Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas and Dr. Torsten Trey, made it to the top bestseller list two weeks ago in Winnipeg Canada. [Zhang Yeling, Associate Professor, University of Manitoba in Winnipeg]: "Local people in Winnipeg are very interested Matas' book. During the book signing evening, the entire bookstore was full of people in the signing area, with some even standing outside. Many people joined the event and all the people in Winnipeg know of the organ harvesting atrocities." Zhang said many people were shocked that such atrocities could be occurring in China, which many see as a rising power. The book examines the sources of organs for China's booming transplant industry. Chinese authorities have stated that the main source is from prisoners on death row. But authors in "State Organs" point out that there is ample evidence to suggest otherwise. The book concludes that a large number of organs used in transplant in China come from prisoners of conscience, specifically practitioners of Falun Gong, who disappeared by the hundreds of thousands into the communist regime's system of prisons and labor camps. David Matas estimated that of the 10000 organ transplants carried out in China every year, 8000 of them were sourced from live Falun Gong practitioners. Dr. Torsten Trey, who is also ... Plague Kills One in Sichuan, Authorities Preventing Spread
On Tuesday, the spokesperson for China's Ministry of Health, Deng Haihua, officially announced that the plague has returned to China. One man has been left dead in southwestern Sichuan province, but authorities are making every effort to control the spread. Deng's speech came a week after the actual death, and several days after the initial report that the cause of death was the bubonic plague. An NTD reporter called the press office in the Sichuan Provincial Health Department that made the initial announcement for detailed information, but got refused. [Officer, press office in Sichuan Provincial Health Department]: "We don't accept phone call interview or consultation. If you are from a company, please fax us with your company's official seal. And then we will deal with it, OK?" On September 2, several villagers in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture ate a dead marmot they found. Two days later, one of the herdsmen became sick, showing symptoms including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever. He died on September 7. Deng is saying that no one who had contact with the man has developed symptoms, but they have been placed under quarantine. The plague killed one person last year and two in 2010 in China. Li Wangyang's Family Denies Signing Suicide Finding
Three months after Li Wangyang's death, the family of the Tiananmen Square activist are still looking for answers. Li's suspicious death in a hospital room in Hunan Province sparked outrage and accusations that authorities there were responsible for his death. After mounting public pressure, Hunan police issued a report of an official investigation on July 9th. The report claims Li did indeed kill himself and his family had agreed to cremate his body less than a week after he died. The report also claimed Li's family had approved the investigation results. On Tuesday, Guangdong based human rights lawyer Tang Jilin told NTD that Li's younger sister, Li Wangling, denies having ever seen that report. The family also did not agree to the cremation. [Tang Jilin, Lawyer for Li Wangyang's Family] "I asked them whether they received these two investigation reports issued by the government. They said no, they were never given anything." Tang says Li Wangling and her husband remain under strict surveillance. Rights group Human Rights in China also reported on Monday that Tang was detained for five days last week, when he tried to visit Hunan to investigate Li's death. Li Wangyang was found hanging from a windowsill in a hospital room on June 6th. The labor rights activist had served 11 years in prison after participating in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. His supporters widely questioned how Li, who was left nearly disabled, blind, and deaf, was able to hang himself whilst ... From: NTDTV Views: 10 1 ratings Time: 01:26 More in News & Politics

Stolen Hieroglyphic Blocks From Ancient Mayan City Returned
Guatemala recovers three hieroglyphic blocks after looters raided the ancient Mayan city of Corona and sold the stolen merchandise to private collections. Full story: Guatemalan authorities have recovered three limestone blocks with hieroglyphic inscriptions. They come from Mayan ruins at La Corona in Guatemala. The blocks had been looted and taken out of the country. Guatemalan archaeologists said the recovery of the blocks will allow them to re-build a staircase discovered earlier this year. It had that had been stripped bare by looters. [Dr. Tomas Barrientos, Co-Director, La Corona Archaeological Site]: "The staircase blocks that we discovered this year are of the same size, the same format, and from the same time, so they form a continuous text that has allowed us to place them. This is a very important addition to what had already been discovered." With the return of the three blocks, Guatemalan archaeologists now have 18 of 22 known blocks which made up the staircase at La Corona. The Guatemalan vice-minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage, said that the blocks are of enormous financial value. [Maria Chan, Vice-Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage]: "This is part of our cultural heritage, and we recognize it has value. It has important economic value for collectors. It doesn't have that much of an economic value for academics. Collector's desire grows, facilitating the demand for archaeological objects, which they see more as works of art than we do, as we ... Donkeys Replace School Buses in Mexico's Guanaujuato State
Donkeys take place of school buses in an impoverished Mexican town. Full story: The humble donkey is coming to the aid of school children in Mexico's Guanaujuato state. Poor public transport in the largely rural area of Manuel Doblado has left many children facing over a 3 mile trek through rough terrain to reach the local schoolhouse. So local authorities have donated 26 donkeys to the town of Oja de Agua to help get the children to school on time. Nine-year-old Mariana Vargas, now rides to school on one of the government-supplied donkeys, named Filemon. [Mariana Vargas, Schoolgirl]: "I used to walk. When it was raining, I didn't go. When it very cold, I didn't go either. When it was nice outside like this, we went." After school, many of the donkeys are again put to work by local families, who use them to carry produce to market and other daily farm tasks. Mariana's father, Manuel Vargas, said the donkeys provide a cheap way to get children to school without being exhausted by the long trek. [Manuel Vargas, Mariana's Father]: "It was cold in the mornings. Now they just get their little jackets on, their scarfs, and with the donkey it is easy to get them to school. It's less exhausting, and it's cheap transport, because there aren't many costs." Authorities hope to reduce absenteeism in local schools, which often rely on attendance statistics to ensure continued government funding. iPhone 5%mdashFoxconn Using Interns to Fill Quota
[Geoffrey Crothall, Director of Communications at China Labour Bulletin]: "Well, I think they should realize that what goes into their phones is an awful lot of hard work by young people, probably younger than themselves, who have very little choice rather than go into those factories because there are no other opportunities available to them." Geoffrey Crothall is talking about the new iphone 5%mdashto be released today. China Daily reported that interns in Huai'an City of Jiangsu Province were being used like contract workers on Foxconn's assembly line. Even students studying English, Education, Food and Finance were required to do an internship there. The influx of interns came as Apple Inc. releases its new iphone 5. With such a big order, Foxconn was short on staff. The relationship between the schools and Foxconn is not clear, but the report cited a few students who were pressured or denied graduation until they would intern at Foxconn. However, this practice in not limited to Foxconn or Jiangsu province according to Geoffrey Crothall.
